My uncle Jake (James) Leibfried
b. about 1881 in WI, reared in S.
Minn. and N. Iowa, disappeared in
1909 after saying he was going to
Calif. to do mining. Recently I
found an unmailed letter addressed
to him in Keswick, CA., probably an
old mining town in Shasta County
which no longer exists. Any info or
clues on Jake or Keswick would be
appreciated. He may have changed his
name. |

Lowe |
I am trying to find out any
information on my Great-great
Grandfather, John Rufus Lowe. I
found him in the 1860 census in
Vacaville, however, I know that he
wound up in Shasta Co. in the 1870's
to 1880's. He was quite successful
as a vinyardist and rancher in the
Happy Valley area. My cousin did
find his obit, but thats all. I'm
wondering if any other records would
be available. Is the name familiar?
Would appreciate some help on this.
Thanks. |

Anspach |
I am looking for info. on Peter Anspach -
he was in Shasta Co. in 1865
prospecting. I do not know if he
died there. I have copies of letters
written to his family in Clay Co.,
IL. in 1865. Was there a census or
other record of him? He mentions
having a fourth interest in a mine
but not the name of it. |

My father's family changed the last
name from ? to Allendale
sometime in the 1920's. My parents
were married in Grass Valley on May
11, 1929. At that time he was using
the last name of Allendale. My
mother's name was Wilma Greefield.

obituaries be available in the
Redding library? He had a least four
children and I would like to
establish contact with their
descendants if possible. Thank you

Angell, Farren,
Knisely, Utbz, Ultz, Uttez |
I am looking for information on
the ULTZ
(or any other variation) family that
came to Shasta County, California
from Marion County, Ohio in the mid
to late 1800's. C. UTBZ and
C. UTTEZ
are listed in the 1860 Census of
Shasta County as numbers 736 and 737
(respectively). The town is listed
as Cottonwood. Christopher ULTZ, his
wife Lydia Ann (nee KNISELY)
ULTZ were there with their children:
- Alice Sarah - b Ohio
m Mr. W.H. Angell of Shasta
- Anthony A. (perhaps called
Adam) - b Ohio
- William A. - b Ohio
- Ada Luella ULTZ was b 13 Apr
1860 in Shasta Co, CA.
m Mr. William Dunham Farren of
Yolo Co.
The family left Shasta County and
moved to Idaho around 1865 -1868.
There is no mention of Lydia Ann
(nee KNISELY) ULTZ in Idaho, so she
must have died in Shasta County. If
anyone can help with marriage, birth
or death records as well as any
newspaper articles that may have
been about the above listed people,
it would be greatly appreciated.
Copy and mailing fees will be
reimbursed. |

Hume, Shaner, Weir |
___ Weir
was b 1861 in Pottsville,
Schuykill, PA. He died in
Berkeley, CA. May 10, 1915. He was
a quartz miner in the Buckeye area
from about 1880 to the early
1900's. In 1887 he made a brief
trip back to PA and married Sarah
Ella Shaner
of Chester Co., PA. They returned
to Buckeye and most of their
children were born in the County.
He had two brothers, Reuben and
Mathew who also came to the
Redding area. Edward Hume m
Caroline Weir (sister of the Weir
brothers) about 1872 in PA.They
probably came to CA before her
brothers. Edward was also involved
in mining. He died in Shasta
County in 1894. I believe he had
brothers, John and Mathew who came
to the area with him.
I have seen the HEATH &
TAYLOR families mentioned with the
Hume family. I have made a couple
of research trips to the Redding
area. And I had hopped I might
find desendents of one of these
families. And even though I have
been unsuccessful thus far, I
still feel they might exist. Your
interest is appreciated.
