Garter, Judge Ephraim
Reading Independent, Thursday, April 15, 1880

Judge Garter, an old and respected gentleman and pioneer, after a short illness departed this life for that bourne from whence no traveler ere returns on Friday, April the 9th, at a quarter past ten in the evening. Judge Garter came to California in 1849, bringing his family with him, and entered upon the duties of his profession. In 1850 he located in Shasta, where he has resided ever since. As a lawyer he stood in the front ranks of the profession, and for several years he occupied the position of District Judge of the Ninth Judicial District. He also occupied the position of County Judge of Shasta county. Mr. Garter was loved and respected by all who knew him, and has taken with him to his grave a reputation unsullied, and a character unassailed and unassailable. He had attained the ripe age of 72 years when he died.

[Since writing the above we are informed by John Ellis that Mrs. Garter died this morning at 5 o'clock.]

Note: Following the obituary are resolutions passed by Judge Bell in the Superior Court which mention Judge Garter's first name of Ephraim.

Gasped and Died
OAK (Shasta Co.) --
Frank Geiger, of this place, attended Easter services at Redding Sunday, drove home in the afternoon, unhitched his horse, went into the parlor of his father's house, sat down in a chair, gave one gasp and died. He had not complained even of feeling unwell. Heart trouble is the assigned cause of his sudden passing. He was a fleshy man and was aged 27 years. The funeral took place this morning from the Catholic Church in Redding, where he attended Easter devotions Sunday.

Funeral services for Tillie Gemmill, who died in a traffic accident yesterday, will be conducted at McDonald's Chapel tomorrow at 1 p.m. Interment will follow in the family cemetery at Big Bend. The 68-year-old Central Valley woman leaves a son, Ira, of Central Valley. She was born June 30, 1894

Gibson, Roselene Inez
Redding Record-Searchlight, Monday, March 20, 1978

Anderson--Mass for Roselene Inez Gibson of Anderson will be said at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church here. Mrs. Gibson died Sunday at Mercy Medical Center. She was 59. Born July 2, 1918, in the Cove area near Montgomery Creek, she was a lifetime Shasta County resident.

She was the past president of the Welfare Rights Organization and the past regional chairwoman of the Native American United Pow-Wow Organization and was a member of Pit River Tribal Inc., and the Madesi Band of Pit River Indians. She gave free Christmas parties and Thanksgiving dinners for Indians and the underprivileged.

She leaves her husband, Larson of Anderson; six sons, Larson Jr., Alvin McDaniels and Lawrence McDaniels, all of Anderson, and Duane, Melvin and Dennis McDaniels, all of Redding; a daughter, Anita Westergaard of Anderson; five brothers, Ray, Duane and Ronald Morales, all of Susanville, Richard Morales of Cleveland, Ohio, and Earl Morales of Sparks, Nev.; two sisters, Viola Williams and Yvonne Morales, both of Susanville; her stepmother, Leona Morales of Susanville; and 16 grandchildren.

Burial will be in the Centerville Cemetery. A priest of the Sacred Heart Parish will officate at the services. McDoanld's Redding Chapel is in charge of arrangements

Mrs. Rosina E. GILES, of Balls Ferry, widow of J. K. GILES and a resident of Shasta County since 1873, died yesterday afternoon near Redding at the home of her son, J.W. GILES, at the age of 71. The funeral will be held at Balls Ferry Tuesday afternoon.

Joseph R. Gloss, 70, of Redding died Saturday at Mercy Hospital. He was born Nov 2, 1901 in Urboue, Czechoslovakia and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II . A retired cook, he had lived in Shasta County for the past 18 years. He leaves his wife, Lydia, of Redding; two sons, Robert of Bay City, Mich., and Milton of Redding; a stepson, Gary Martin of McCloud; a daughter, Mrs. Betty Lemay of Bay City, Mich.; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at McDonald's Redding Chapel by the Rev. L. Hricziscse. Burial will take place at the Redding Cemetery.

Goins, Luther Cordy

Luther Cordy Goins, 79, of Cottonwood, died yesterday morning in a Redding hospital. He was born Nov. 4, 1877, in North Carolina. He leaves his widow, Neoma Alwilda of Cottonwood; a daughter, Mrs. Beula McClure of Cottonwood; three sons, Ira of Redding, Wayne of San Manuel, Ariz., and James A. of Mammoth, Ariz.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Cottonwood Baptist church, with the Rev. Harold A. Johanson officiating. Interment will be in Cottonwood cemetery, under the direction of McDonald's chapel.

Mrs. Neoma Analda Goins died Wednesday at Shasta General Hospital at the age of 95. Mrs. Goins was born in Waco, Texas, April 17, 1875. She leaves her daughter, Mrs. Beulah McClure of Cottonwood, three sons, James Goins and Wayne Goins both of Winkleman, Ariz., and Ira Goins of Old Shasta, eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Cottonwood Baptist Church. The Rev. Lyndell Kuns will officiate. Burial will be in the Cottonwood District Cemetery.

Gordon, Ray Guy
Redding Record-Searchlight, Mon., August 1, 1983

Ray Guy Gordon, 90, of Redding died Friday at Memorial Hopsital in Redding. No services will be held. Remains will be cremated. Mr. Gordon was born Sept. 21, 1892, in Hutchinson, Kan., and moved to Shasta County in 1936 from Madera. He was a saw mill worker for 30 years with the former U. S. Plywood Corporation in Anderson. He is survived by wife Ida; son Neville; daughter DeNela Phillips; and six grandchildren, all of Redding. Allen & Dahl Funeral Chapel in Redding is handling arrangements.

GRAVES BABY DIES

Timothy Graves, day old son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Graves of Redding, died this morning at Memorial hospital.  Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Johnston mortuary, the Rev. James F. Price officiating.  Interment will follow in Redding cemetery.

In addition to his parents, he leaves two brother, Ronald and Steven, his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Martin and Asa Graves, all of Madera and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Ward of England.

Green, Louis Franklin
Redding Record-Searchlight, Wed., June 8, 1977

Funeral services for Louis Franklin Green of Redding will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at McDonald's Redding Chapel. Green died Monday at his home. He was 75.

Born June 28, 1901, in the Oklahoma Territory, he lived in Shasta County 32 years. He was a retired mechanic and a veteran of World War I. He leaves his wife, Gertrude of Redding; two sons, Louis "Rick" and Lindy, both of Tulsa, Okla.; a stepson, Edward Pool of Weaverville; two stepdaughters, Grace Hisson of Redding and Ruth Steele of Vallejo; a brother, Everett of Sumner, Wash.; a sister, Vivian of Sacramento, 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Roy A. Nelson will officiate at the services. Burial will be at Redding Cemetery.

Grotefend, Augustus
Redding Courier-Free Press, 14 Feb 1922

Augustus Grotefend, a son of one of the first families of the old town of Shasta and a pioneer miner and prospector of the county, passed away in Redding at 9:30 Monday evening at the age of 63 years. He was born in Shasta. "Gus" Grotefend, as he was known to his friends, had been in poor health for some time and during his last hours was cared for by his sister, Mrs. Louis Prehn of Shasta.

For more than 20 years he had mined and prospected in the vicinity of Middle Creek. While of a retiring disposition he counted many people of the county as his friends. He owned the hotel building at Middle Creek. Six brothers and sisters, all well known in this county, survive him. Miss Sarah Grotefend, Miss Miile [Mille?]Grotefend and Mrs. Louis Prehn of Shasta; Dr. George Grotefend of Redding, and Fred Grotefend and Charles W. Grotefend of San Francisco.

Interment will be in the cemetery at the old town of Shasta where he was born and reared.

Gullixson, William C.

Anderson – Graveside Services for William Charles Gullixson, 43, of Anderson will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Whiskeytown Cemetery. Mr. Gullixson’s family will officiate. Mr. Gullixson died Monday, Dec. 1, 1997, at his residence after a long illness.

Born Nov. 19, 1954 in Redding, he was a lifelong resident of Shasta County. He worked as a fireman for Centerville Fire Department, was a former member of the Shasta College Fire Department, and former president of the Future Farmer’s of America at Shasta High School.

Survivors include wife Tonya; and sister Judith Mellow of Redding. Arrangements are being handled by Allen & Dahl Funeral Chapel in Anderson.
