The genealogical records maintained by government is frequently available from multiple sources. Copies of most government-created records are provided to the state, and may be found in the state library or the state archives library. Listed below of are local government offices.

County Government Offices

County Courthouse in Downieville

The county government officers are located at the courthouse building in Downieville.

The County Clerk-Recorder is on the first floor. This office has records of births (1857-present), marriages (1852-present) and deaths (1864-present). Some of the earliest vital records are incomplete. An index is available on their publicly available PCs. Also available are deeds, mining claims, voting registers and other types of records dating back to the 1850s. For some records, you will have to sign a form certifying that you have a genealogical connection to the people whose records you want.

The Superior Court is on the second floor. There you will find records of wills, probate, naturalization and civil & criminal court records dating back to the 1850s.

Remember that Sierra County was created from Yuba County on 16 April 1852. For records prior to that date, check with the Yuba County clerk-recorder office in Marysville.

There is a charge for to have a copy of a record made (a flat amount for some and a per-page fee for others).
