Edna Elizabeth Edwards, the
only child of Mr. & Mrs. William Elsworth Edwards was born in Oakland,
November 16, 1912. She met Ray in 1937 and they were married in 1939. She
was teaching music and Ray was working as a trimmerman for Diamond Match
Company. Their first home in Paradise was called "Forty-nine Pines".
The couple had two children: Glenn & Will
They remained in Paradise until
July 4, 1955 when they moved to a home on the Hawes family ranch, which
was divided among the four boys after their father's death. They named
their home "Hawes River Acres" and Ray started farming, though he continued
to work for Diamond National in Red Bluff. Edna became a Reading Consultant
for the Shasta County Schools, a
position she held for eight years.
Glenn finished at Cascade Elementary
and Will graduated from Sacramento River School as had two previous generations
of the family and both attended Anderson High School, before going on to
college. Will attended Pepperdine and Boalt Hall Law School, and is currently
practicing law in Redding. Glenn studied Animal Husbandry and Soils at
Chico State College which served him and his customers well when he started
Hawes Farm and Ranch Supply on the family ranch. And the knowledge serves
him and his constituents well in his current position as Shasta County
Supervisor.
Ray died August 31, 1972 after
a lengthy illness. Edna sold their home on the ranch and moved to Fairway
Oaks Mobile Estates.
Edna taught for seven years
at Shasta Junior College; she retired in 1975, after a thirty-nine year
career in education. Like most educators she had worked with many local
groups and she remained active in the Church of Christ until her death
April 23, 1993.
