Robert A. Crawford
"Bob" was born July 31, 1929, in Chula Vista, son to Alvin G. and Doris H. Crawford, older brother to Jean A. Myres. He lived in National City, where his love of music and its sound purity led him to many interesting occupations.
While he was only a boy, Bob built his own radio transmitter with which he broadcast his own musical radio show to the surrounding two blocks of his neighborhood, much to the chagrin of the authorities.
At the age of 17, he and a friend bought the Ken Cinema where he redesigned the sound system and booked his own films, largely for the quality of the music. He developed a strong love for film and the musical scores within them. Throughout his life, he compiled an extensive library of film and their accompanying sound tracks.
Bob met his wife of 50 years, Leonor, while repairing the projector for the movie theater where she worked as the projectionist.
He attended SDSU for three years before he was drafted into the Army in 1951. Because of his extensive knowledge in electronics, he was recommended to the Cold Injury Research Team, to study the effects of frostbite. While working in the field hospitals in Korea, he developed an instrument, using ultrasound, to measure the depth of frostbite injury.
When he was discharged, doctors with whom he had worked, urged him to help them at Indiana University Medical Center. There, working as an integral part of the Surgical Experimental Laboratory, he developed the first operational oximeter, an instrument that measures the level of oxygen in the blood. His concept is still used in hospitals today.
In 1955, he received his Bachelor of Science degree in physics from Butler University, Ind. He taught physics and electronics at Butler for two years before working at RCA, where he developed the sound filters for their "new" color televisions.
Bob, his wife and four daughters moved to Phoenix in 1958 to become project engineer for Motorola's Western Military Electronics Center.
In 1962 he was recruited to Midland Manufacturing in Kansas City, Kan. where he served as vice president of engineering. He developed high frequency quartz crystal filters and wrote a paper that was later entered into the Library of Congress. His son was born there.
His ingenuity and resourcefulness was evident to a friend who encouraged him to start his own crystal filter manufacturing plant in Phoenix. He and his friend opened C-F Networks, Inc. in 1963. That success led to the creation of other manufacturing businesses in Arizona: Networks Sciences and RLC Company.
He moved to Carlsbad in 1976 and started two more manufacturing plants known as AFT and AFD.
Away from work, Bob was a voracious reader. He loved to study philosophy and engage in political discussion. He had earned his pilot's license while in Indiana and flew his own airplane while in Arizona. He enjoyed traveling.
He will be remembered as a good and loving father, a generous friend and husband, a teacher and philosopher. He is much admired by his colleagues and respected by his relatives.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Leonor, his daughters, Dody Tucker, Linda Crawford, Teresa Crawford, Janet Howard, his sister Jean Myres, all of California; his son Guy Crawford of Arizona, 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Bob passed away peacefully at home on March 19, 2001. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 31, at Berge-Roberts Mortuary, 607 National City Boulevard, National City. Private interment at Glen Abbey cemetery follows on Monday.
