Norma Lavender, 79
OCEANSIDE - Norma B. Lavender, 79, died Thursday, June 7, 2001, at Tri-City Medical Center.
Born Dec. 6, 1921, in Platte Center, Neb., she lived in Oceanside for two years and Riverside for 47 years. She was an executive secretary to the commander of the 15th Air Force at March Air Force Base for 37 years. She had been a member of Altrusa International.
Mrs. Lavender is survived by her daughter, Cindy L. Brassington of Oceanside; stepdaughter Marci Rollins of Kaneohe, Hawaii; brother Lewis Berends of Mt. Vernon, Iowa; sister Agnes Lagler of Grant, Neb.; and grandchildren Ryan and Jeffrey Brassington.
A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, June 16, at Faith Lutheran Church in Vista with the Rev. Dr. B.D. Droegemueller officiating. A private cremation and inurnment will be held at St. Johnıs Church cemetery in Creston, Neb.

Wallace Ashley, 78
SLIDELL, La. - Wallace Daniel Ashley, 78, died Friday, June 8, 2001, at Slidell Memorial Hospital.
Born in Simpson County, Miss., he lived in Slidell for 10 months. He was retired from the U.S. Marine Corps. He had been a member of the Elks Lodge.
Mr. Ashley was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria T. Cambell Ashley. He is survived by his daughters Susan Francis Ashley and Sherry Ann Clark, both of Escondido; sisters Mary Alice Nunnery, Kristine Becker, Dorothy DiMaggio; and grandchildren Mathew Jacob Koonz and Jennifer Koonz.
Visitation was held from 2 to 4 p.m. and funeral service at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 10 at Schoen Funeral Home. Interment was 1 p.m. Monday, June 11, at Poplar Springs cemetery in Poplar Springs, Miss.

Leola Murphy, 79
SAN MARCOS - Leola B. Murphy, 79, died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at her home.
Born May 8, 1922, in Westmoreland, she lived in San Marcos for 15 years. She had been a registered nurse for 37 years and had last worked at Orange Grove Community Hospital in Pomona. She enjoyed her rose garden.
Mrs. Murphy was preceded in death by her son, John Jesse Murphy, on May 12, 1994. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Allan M. Murphy of San Marcos; son and daughter-in-law Michael Lee and Caroline Murphy of Bee Cave, Texas; daughters and sons-in-law Candice Eileen and David Cutter of Springfield, Va., and Evelyn Ann and Garry Usnick of Upland; sister and brother-in-law Mildred and Todd Morgon of Long Beach; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A shelter service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday, June 15, at Fort Rosecrans National cemetery in Point Loma.

ESCONDIDO - Oscar Flores, 33, died Thursday, June 7, 2001.
Born Sept. 16, 1967, in Mexico, he lived in Escondido for 14 years. He was a cook at the Rancho Bernardo Inn for 13 years. He enjoyed playing soccer, running, basketball and traveling.
Mr. Flores is survived by his wife of eight years, Virginia Flores of Escondido; mother Socorro Flores and father Cruz Flores, both of Alcapulco, Mexico; sons Oscar Flores Jr. and Dominic Flores, both of Escondido; daughter Kenia M. Flores of Escondido; brother and sister-in-law Abel and Jacinta Flores of Mexico; and sister and brother-in-law Susana and Enrique Machicao of Denver.
Viewing is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. today, June 12, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary. A Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 13, at St. Maryıs Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

VISTA - Huntley Thomas Owens, 88, died Saturday, June 9, 2001, at his home.
Born June 18, 1912, in Los Angeles, he lived in Vista for 31 years. He was the owner/operator of Owens Radio & TV Service for 30 years.
Mr. Owens was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Owens, on Feb. 3, 1985, and wife Gwen Owens in January 2000.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Thomas and Karen Owens of Torrance; and grandchildren Holly, Steven and Scott Owens. No formal services are planned. A private burial is planned at Pacific Crest cemetery in Redondo Beach.

ESCONDIDO - June E. Smith, 73, died Sunday, June 10, 2001, at her home of emphysema.
Born July 1, 1927, in Ponca City, Okla., she lived in Escondido for 13 years. She retired in 1993 as a nurse from Pomerado Hospital.
Ms. Smith was preceded in death by her brothers, Mike Richardson, in November 1999 and Charles Richardson in November 2000. She is survived by her son, Phillip Smith of Escondido; daughter Susan Clester of Grants Pass, Ore.; and grandson Dany Clester.

Irwin Colldeweih, 88
OCEANSIDE - Irwin Ross Colldeweih, 88, died Sunday, June 10, 2001, at his home.
Born Dec. 20, 1912, in Coalinga, he lived in Oceanside for 16 years and in San Diego for 35 years. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1930 to 1957 as a commander. He worked as a western regional manager from 1958 to 1970 for Dalmo-Victor division of Textron in Belmont.
Mr. Colldeweih was preceded in death by his wife, June Walles Colldeweih, on March 5, 1974. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Marion Colldeweih of Oceanside; sons Alan Bruce Colldeweih of Lakeside and Robert Ross Colldeweih of San Diego; stepdaughter Karen Elizabeth Horton of Stinson Beach; and step-granddaughter Kate Rose Horton.
Private graveside services with honors will be held at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. A private cremation is planned.

Theodore Huckabone, 70
SAN DIEGO - Theodore W. Huckabone, 70, died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, of cancer.
Born June 9, 1930, in Warren, Pa., he lived in San Diego for 26 years. He retired from the U.S. Navy in February 1975, Southwest Junior High in June 1989 and as a square dance caller in 1992. He served in the U.S. Navy for 27 years, during the Korean War, Vietnam War, in Lebanon and Guantanmo Bay.
Mr. Huckabone is survived by his wife of 23 years, Loretta J. Huckabone of San Diego; sons Michael E. Huckabone of Campbell and Jay B. Huckabone of La Mirada; stepson Jeffrey D. Deiss of Davis; stepdaughter Leigh J. O'Brien of Baldwin, N.Y.; brothers Gary Huckabone of Warren, Pa., and Jack Huckabone of Spokane, Wash.; sister Virginia Wood of Corry, Pa.; grandchildren Emily, Donna and Nathan Huckabone, Allison and Thomas Osterberg-Deiss, and Katie, Jamie and Jack O'Brien; and one grandchild.

VISTA - Herbert Paul Hinckley, 98, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at Pleasant Care of Vista.
Born June 17, 1902, in Newbedford, Mass., he lived in Vista for 28 years. He was retired as a repairman for A.B. Wollie and Co.
Mr. Hinckley was preceded in death by his wife, Juliette C. Hinckley, in 1986. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law John and Mary Hinckley of Escondido and Paul and Jane Hinckley of Hicksville, N.Y.; daughter Alice Zigelis of Charlotte, N.C.; sister Dorinda Jaret of Keene, N.H.; grandson Glen Hinckley and step-grandson Jason Hinckley.

Born Sept. 13, 1910, in Findlay, Ill., she lived in Oceanside for 11 years. She was a homemaker.
Ms. Flowers is survived by her nephew, Tom Flowers of Cerritos.

H. Agnes Wheeler, 61
VISTA - H. Agnes Wheeler, 61, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside.
Born June 10, 1940, in Iaeger, W.V., she lived in Vista for 22 years and in North County for 32 years total. She worked at the Rancho Carillo KinderCare in Carlsbad. She graduated from Moody Bible Institute and served as a medic in the U.S. Air Force from August 1962 to November 1965.
Mrs. Wheeler is survived by her children, Donna Christy, Stephen Wheeler II and Lisa Wheeler.

Born March 10, 1919, in Tennessee, she lived in Escondido for 20 years. She retired as a medical secretary after 21 years for San Carlos Medical Group.
Mrs. Bonner was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Bonner, in 2001. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law Franklin and Frances McComas of Fort Wright, Ky.; daughters and son-in-law Margaret and Aaron Lipton of Wenatchee, Wash., and Nancy Coiro of Paterson, N.J.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

ESCONDIDO - Stuart Paye Wilson, 69, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001.
Born Dec. 14, 1931, in Los Angeles, he lived in Escondido for one year. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He enjoyed golfing trips, football, boating, crosswords, building models, gardening, movie and was a John Wayne fan. He piloted his own airplane.
Mr. Wilson is survived by his wife of 11 years, Patricia Wilson of Escondido; sons and daughters-in-law Steve P. and Maryanne Wilson of Escondido and Keith R. and Terri Wilson of Big Bear; grandchildren, Kelly Scillion and Erin Wilson; two great-grandchildren; two cousins, one niece; and four nephews.

William Ulman, 86
ESCONDIDO - William J. Ulman, 86, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at Palomar Medical Center of heart and renal failure.
Born Sept. 17, 1914, in San Bernardino, he lived in Escondido for 47 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a teacher in Redland and in Escondido for 20 years at Escondido High School. He retired in 1974 and then served as president on the board of trustees of the Escondido High School District. He owned a 10 acre avocado grove since 1956.
Mr. Ulman was preceded in death by his daughter, Judith A. Peeples, in 1997. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jean W. Ulman of Escondido; son and daughter-in-law Gudrun Ulman of Escondido; daughter Gary Peeples of Escondido; and grandchildren Erik Ulman, and Brian and Amanda Peeples.
A private cremation and scattering is planned.

ESCONDIDO - Per Fritjof "Pete" Gissler, 84, died Monday, June 11, 2001, at Scripps Green Hospital.
Born Oct. 13, 1916, in Sweden, he lived in Escondido since 1952. He was a self-employed builder and retired in 1979. He was a member of the Elks Lodge.
Mr. Gissler was preceded in death by his brothers, Sven and Lennart Gissler. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Elin Gissler of Escondido; son and daughter-in-law Bjorn "BJ and Mai Gissler of Escondido; daughter and son-in-law Kerstin and Greg Marlatt of Vista; brother and sister-in-law Eric and Tina Gissler of Escondido; sister Anna Persson of Sweden; grandchildren Thomas, Michael, John, and Jenny Gissler and John Mariatt; and nine great-grandchildren.

Margaret Davis Larkin
Margaret Davis Larkin of Carlsbad, died May 28, in San Diego after a brief bout with esophageal cancer. Born on Aug. 11, 1918, in New York City, Peggy grew up in Minnesota and later moved to San Diego North County where she lived for almost 40 years. After retiring as a Family Intervention Therapist for the Care Unit at Mission Bay Hospital/San Diego, she contributed her time to several charitable organizations, most notably as a board member of The Country Friends/North County, as vice president of the San Dieguito Animal Care Center in Rancho Santa Fe, and as a volunteer at The Country Friends' Shop in Rancho Santa Fe. She was an active volunteer at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Del Mar and at Scripps Hospital's McDonald Center.
Peggy loved all sports, renewing her season ticket to the Chargers games even after the climb to her seat became arduous. She played golf all her life and spent countless happy hours on the county's many beautiful courses. An active resident of Rancho Carlsbad, Peggy gleefully sang in the Mobile-Aires choir and contributed her pennies to weekly bridge and poker games. She also loved the symphony and theater and attended them regularly in San Diego.
She followed the careers and interests of her three daughters as well as her nieces, nephews, their families, and all their best friends. Her family and many friends will miss her kindness, compassion, humor, and courage. She was preceded in death by her parents, Grace and Donald D. Davis, her sister Mary Davis Pierson, and her ex-husband, Arthur E. Larkin, Jr. Surviving are three daughters, Wendy Davis Larkin of San Rafael, Barbara Lou Larkin of Midland, Ga., and Margaret Larkin Hutchison of Valatie, NY and her brother Donald D. Davis, Jr. of Shorewood, MN.
