F.D. "Ted" James
F.D. "Ted" James went to sleep peacefully at home on May 4, 2001, surrounded by his loving family. Ted, great-grandson of Thomas Whaley, was the last person born in the Whaley House in Old Town San Diego. He was born on Feb. 20, 1916, in the same bedroom in which his mother was born and lived in the house until 1939. The house was occupied by the family until 1953. The Whaley House had been San Diego's first courthouse, a Sunday school, a funeral parlor, a dairy, a theater and a meeting place. The San Diego Historical Society opened the Whaley House as a museum in 1960. In May of 1960, Ted presented the original deed at the dedication ceremonies.
Ted attended the following schools in San Diego: Franklin (kindergarten), Lincoln, Fremont, and Our Lady of Angeles (elementary through eighth grades); Roosevelt Jr. High; Point Loma and San Diego High Schools and San Diego State University.
On Dec. 25, 1939, Ted married Margaret (Peggy) Heron in San Diego at 1032 East C St., the home of Peggy's parents. In 1945, Ted and Peg moved to what was then the outskirts of Escondido. For the next 61 years they maintained close ties with their neighborhood friends, all of whom had eventually moved away.
Ted was employed with pacific Telephone Co. for 37 years. He was one of the installers involved in Escondido's first dial switchboard, which was put into service Feb. 1, 1960, at Palomar Memorial Hospital.
Ted's hobbies were traveling, camping, reading (he loved history), hunting and gun-making. Ted started his gunsmithing in 1958 under the guidance of master gun maker Leroy (Buster) Shebal. Ted got into the gun-making "kick" with an eye to the future - a shop of his own when he retired from the telephone company. He repaired and made guns for his hunting buddies. Among some of the better-known hunters for whom he did work in the county were Joe Van Doren, Dr. C.G. Bassett and Ralph Lane. Ted and Dr. Bassett were hunting partners, and every year they would schedule their vacations together and go to Utah and Nevada.
Ted leaves behind his wife of 61 years, Margaret (Peggy) James. He also leaves two daughters; M. Suzanne Lombard and her husband, Jim (who were married in the Whaley House), and Teddi Fallico and her husband, Kenney, his granddaughter, Esme Lombard and his grandson Kevin Fallico.
The family would like to thank all of our relatives and friends who have given their support to the James family during this past year. A special thank you to VITAS Healthcare of San Diego and Brookdale Place of San Marcos. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to VITAS Healthcare Corp. of California, 8880 Rio San Diego Drive, Suite 950, San Diego, CA 92108.
The celebration of Ted's life will be held on Saturday, June 9. at Brookdale Place of San Marcos, 1590 W. San Marcos Blvd., San Marcos, CA between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

She married the love of her life in 1961, Dr. Charles Frederick Brass. She and Fred lived in Solana Beach where he practiced medicine and she maintained their primary residence. After his retirement, she loved to spend summers at their home in her beloved Cody where she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and where Fred loved to hunt and fish.

Patrick, of Cody; her children, Katie Brass of Cody; Louise Abbott, of Solana Beach; Paul Hoffman and wife Lisa of Cody; her grandchildren, Marianne Stoll and husband Troy of Cody; Christopher Kenney and wife Tally of Billings, Mont.; Paul Abbott of Solana Beach; Desiree Hoffman and Fritz Hoffman of Cody; three great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
