Scott Baker, 40
CHULA VISTA - Scott Anthony Baker, 40, died Wednesday, June 28, 2000.

Born June 6, 1960, in San Diego, he was a resident of Chula Vista and formerly of Escondido. He was employed at Chuey's restaurant as a bartender.

Mr. Baker is survived by his parents, Ralph and Beverly Baker of Imperial Beach and Julie and Clinton Sumner of Chula Vista, sister Donna Sweet of Guam and brothers Roger Baker of Santee and Buddy Baker of Springfield, Ore.

A private family service is planned.

Humphrey Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.

Stewart Cooper, 91

OCEANSIDE - Stewart Austin "Sam" Cooper, 91, died Saturday, June 24, 2000 at Tri City Medial Center of complications following surgery.

Born Aug. 27, 1908, in Sac City, Iowa, he was a resident of Vista. He was a graduate of Iowa State Teacher's College (now University of Northern Iowa), where is he in the Iowa State Teachers College Football Hall of Fame. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He taught physical education at Albert City, Iowa, and Roosevelt High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was a life member and deacon of the Second Christian Church in Cedar Rapids.

Mr. Cooper was preceded in death by his brothers Russell Cooper, Leon Cooper; sisters Hazel La Porte, Marie Solliday, Helen Kammameyer and Elizabeth Cooper. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Esther Cooper of Vista; daughter Ann Culver of Vista; son Stewart Cooper, Jr. of Oceanside; grandchildren Christina Culver Mendola, Rebecca Culver Scoggins, Catherine Culver White, Chester Culver and Scott Cooper; great-grandchildren Gabriel, Luke and Serena Mendola, Chandler and Bailey White and Grace Scoggins.

A memorial service is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at the Buena Vista Knolls assisted living facility, 2041 W. Vista Way, Vista, CA 92083. (760) 941-3233. A second service will be held at a later date at the Cedar Christian Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

A fund for Roosevelt Jr. High for sports equipment and needy students in the name of Stewart "Sam" Cooper has been established for those preferring an alternative to flowers. Funds may be sent to: Stewart Cooper, Jr., 1425 La Salina St. Apt. B, Oceanside, CA 92054. (760) 757-8808 for information.

Robert Darrough, 87

RAMONA - Robert "Bob" E. Darrough, 87, died Wednesday, June 28, 2000, at a local convalescent hospital.

Born Jan. 8, 1913 in Ramona, he was a lifelong resident of Ramona. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II from 1943-1945 as a staff sergeant. He served with the 140th Army Airways Communications System as a transportation sergeant. He had been a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of the Ramona American Legion #0332, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 3783 and of the Odd Fellows Lodge.

Mr. Darrough is survived by his wife Zelda Darrough of Ramona; sons Robert Darrough of Alaska and John Darrough of Ramona; step-sons Jim Richardson of Sydney, Australia and John Richardson of Ramona; step-daughter, Judy Lacy of El Cajon; brothers John Darrough of Albany, Ore., and Paul Darrough of Ramona; sisters Madeline Grand of Julian and Rosemary Scott of El Cajon; 12 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, July 3 at the First Congregational Church of Ramona with refreshments following in the Fireside room. Private burial will be at Nuevo Memory Gardens in Ramona.

The family suggests memorial donations to: Ramona High School athletic fund, 1401 Hanson Lane, Ramona, CA 92065.

Herbert Brown, 85

CARLSBAD - Herbert Evans Brown, 85, died Thursday, June 22, 2000, at his home. Born Feb. 14, 1915, in Minneapolis, he was a resident of Carlsbad and lived in North County for 26 years. He served in the U.S. Army, Corps of Engineers for 27 years before retiring in 1964. He advanced to the rank of Colonel, commanding the 854th Engineer Aviation Battalion in the South Pacific during WW II. He then served as Director of Physical Plant at Cal State University, San Bernardino for the next 10 years. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1938.

Col. Brown (ret.) is survived by his wife of 61 years, Rachel M. Brown of Carlsbad; daughter and son-in-law Nancy and Richard Beeman of San Diego; sons and daughters-in-law Michael and Mary Lou Brown of Alta Loma, Richard and Serena Brown of Stafford, Va., and Larry and Sherlynn Brown of Houston and 12 grandchildren.

A memorial service with the elite military honor guard will be held at 1 p.m., July 3 at Fort Rosecrans National Military Cemetery.

The family suggests memorial donations to: Cal Farley's Boy's Ranch, P.O. Box 1890, Amarillo, Tx, 79174.

Margaret Reiter, 87

Margaret Marie Reiter, 87, died Saturday, June 24, 2000, at Menifee Valley Medical Center in Sun City.

Born May 2, 1913, in Chicago, she lived in Albuquerque, N.M., for several years. She was a self-employed film developer who operated her own business with her husband. She and her husband moved to San Diego, where they lived for several years until they settled in Sun City. Margaret was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

Mrs. Reiter is survived by her sister, Nadine Sager, of Sun City; and cousins Joyce Platzkow and Walter Platzkow, both of Langdon, N.D. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Reiter, her parents and her brother, Victor Niles.

Miller-Jones Mortuary is handling arrangements.

Edward Balen, 69

Edward Bernard Balen, 69, died Wednesday, June 28, 2000, of cardiac arrest, at Menifee Valley Medical Center in Sun City.

Born Sept. 13, 1930, in Los Angeles, he was an Army veteran who served in Korea. He lived in Hemet for 20 years, working for the city of Hemet in ground maintenance. He loved to travel with his wife of 18 years; they were able to visit 267 different national parks and monuments.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Balen, of Sun City; daughters Tana Farris of Houston, Sandra Womack of Littleton, Colo., and Karen Schuon of Cypress, Texas; son, Stephen Schuon, of Hemet; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

No services have been planned. Miller-Jones Mortuary is handling arrangements.

Peter Rock, 75

Peter Joseph Rock, 75, died Wednesday, June 28, 2000, of cardiac arrest, at Hemet Valley Medical Center in Hemet.

Born Feb. 6, 1925, in San Francisco, he was an Army veteran. He worked for CF Braun as an engineer in Alhambra for 26 years. He enjoyed golfing, tending his rose garden, collecting stamps and making model airplanes. His goal this year was to make a model airplane for all the children of the family. He had completed 17 to date.

He is survived by his wife, Rose Rock, of Sun City; daughters Rose Walsh of Ojai, Mary Kent of Oceanside and Joan Eshenfelder of San Jose; sons Peter Rock of Arcadia, William Rock of Corona and John Rock of Santa Fe Springs; brothers Martin Rock of Ogden, Utah, and James Rock of Atherton; sister, Yvonne Rock, of San Jose; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A service is scheduled for 11 a.m., July 1, 2000, at St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church.

Rafael Sanguino, 34

Rafael Ojeda Sanguino, 34, died of stomach cancer at his residence Tuesday, June 27, 2000.

Born June 8, 1966, in Michoacan, Mexico, he lived in Temecula for three years. He graduated from Culver City High School in 1984 and attended Santa Monica College for two years. He was an international business analyst for Callaway Golf Manufacturing in Carlsbad for seven-and-a-half years. He was a sergeant in the Marines and was awarded a good conduct medal on Nov. 23, 1990. He loved running, camping and being with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Christine Sanguino, of Temecula; parents, Rubin and Altagracia Saguino, of Culver City; brother, Jesus Sanguino; sisters Irma Sanguino of Temecula, Teresa Sanchez of Pico Rivera and Marina Heineman of Culver City; grandmother, Josefa Lopez, of Michoacan, Mexico.

Services were held June 29, 2000. A Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. today at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Temecula. Burial will take place today at 11:45 a.m. at Riverside National Cemetery.

The family suggests memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

Paul Runge Jr., 24
CARLSBAD - Paul Raymond Runge Jr., 24, died Saturday, June 24, 2000, at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido.
Born June 10, 1976, in Englewood, N.J., he was a resident of Carlsbad for the past six years. He was a student at MiraCosta College and worked at Pizza Hut.
Mr. Runge is survived by his parents, Paul Sr. and Elizabeth Runge of Carlsbad; a sister, Jennifer Runge of Carlsbad; and a half-sister, Michelle Joannidias of Bayonne, N.J.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 30, at Eternal Hills Chapel.
The family suggests memorial donations to the Juvenile Diabetes Association, 8304 Clairmont Mesa Blvd., Suite 101, San Diego, CA 92111.

Maxine Suprenant, 84
OCEANSIDE - Maxine Suprenant, 84, died Sunday, June 25, 2000, at her home.
Born May 16, 1916, in Illinois, she worked as a bookkeeper for 30 years before retiring.
Mrs. Suprenant is survived by her husband of 24 years, Frank Suprenant of Oceanside; a daughter, Patricia Kurlack of Redondo Beach; and a granddaughter, Jennifer Kurlack of Redondo Beach.
Inurnment will be held at Eternal Hills Memorial Park in Oceanside.
The family suggests memorial donations to the American Heart Association, 3640 Fifth Ave., San Diego, CA 92103.

James Nicholson, 71
FALLBROOK - James Henry Nicholson, 71, died Saturday, June 24, 2000, at his home in Fallbrook.
Born April 17, 1939, in Jacksonville, Fla., he attended Claflin College in Orangeburg, S.C., and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He worked for the Philadelphia Public School District for 22 years. He retired in 1984. He was a past member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
Mr. Nicholson is survived by his mother, Dorothy Thompson of Philadelphia; three sons, Brian Nicholson of Fallbrook, James Nicholson of Philadelphia and John Nicholson of Oceanside; two brothers, Herman Nicholson of Jacksonville, Fla., and Theodore Nicholson of Dayton Beach, Fla.; a sister, Betty Jean Nicholson of Jacksonville, Fla.; and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m. Friday, June 30, at Berry-Bell and Hall Chapel in Fallbrook.
A service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 1, at Berry-Bell and Hall Chapel with the Rev. Jack Hilliard officiating. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Riverside National cemetery in Riverside.
The family suggests memorial donations to Grace Baptist Church Building Fund, PO Box 395, Fallbrook, CA 92088.

Richard Larsen, 72
OCEANSIDE - Richard S. Larsen, 72, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, at Tri-City Hospital in Oceanside.
Born Nov. 10, 1927, in Minneapolis, Minn., he was a resident of Rancho Bernardo for two years. He worked in the advertising industry and was employed with the Larsen Agency. He graduated from the University of Minnesota.
Mr. Larsen is survived by two sons, Richard Larsen of Colorado Springs and Carl Larsen of Mission Viejo; two daughters, Karen Larsen of Rancho Bernardo and Christina Hoffman of Bothell, Wash.; a brother, David Larsen of Darby, Mt.; and one grandchild.
A private memorial service will be held.

Jewell Nelson, 102
VISTA - Jewell Moody Nelson, 102, died Sunday, June 25, 2000, at her home.
Born May 3, 1898, in Mount Vernon, Miss., she was a resident of Vista for 38 years. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Nelson was a nurse in the U.S. Army Corps during World War I.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick Cyrus Nelson, in 1991.
She is survived by a son, James R. Nelson of Wolfeboro, N.H.; a daughter, Patricia J. Laxton of San Anselmo; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A private cremation will be held at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.

Robert Risvold, 72
ENCINITAS - Robert J. Risvold, 72, died Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at his home.
Born July 11, 1927, in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was a mechanical engineer and worked in the aerospace industry for more than 40 years. He served in the U.S. Army and served in Korea from 1946-47.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Anee M. Risvold, in 1960, and his second wife, Jane Risvold, in 1996.
He is survived by two sons, Randy Risvold of RSM and John Risvold of Huntington Beach; two daughters, Lisa Gregory of Encinitas and Susan Bach of San Diego; a sister, Linda Snyder of Phoenix, Ariz.; and five grandchildren.

John Neely, 80
OCEANSIDE - John Mervyn Neely, 80, died Sunday, June 25, 2000, at his home in Oceanside.
Born Aug. 3, 1919, in Montreal, Canada, he lived in Oceanside for 13 years. He served in the Marine Corps during World War II and was a former member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was a retired engineer for Southern Pacific Railroad.
Mr. Neely is survied by his wife of 53 years, Betty Neely of Oceanside; four sisters, Elsie McKeever and Lila Stone, both of Oceanside; Alice Zangger of Carpenteria; and Anne Johnson of Rancho Bernardo.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 30, at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier.
Oceanside Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

David Ballard, 48
POST FALLS, Idaho - David Martin Ballard, 48, died Thursday, June 22, in Post Falls.
Born April 4, 1952, in Oceanside, Calif., Mr. Ballard is survived by his wife, Karen Silberberger Ballard of Post Falls; three daughters, Kellee, Kim and Aimee; and a sister, Kathryn Ballard Tulley of Rochester, N.Y.
No service will be held at the request of the deceased.

Lois Schmidt, 87
LAKE SAN MARCOS - Lois Schmidt, 87, died Monday, June 26, 2000, at a local convalescent center.
Born Sept. 29, 1912, in Stevens Point, Wisc., she was a junior high school teacher for 28 years, most recently with the Los Angeles city schools.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Patricia Wheeler.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Milton Schmidt of Lake San Marcos; a daughter, Barbara Laurito of Cerritos; two sisters, Margaret Crosby of Lake San Marcos and Dorothy Swazee of Rothchild, Wisc.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Allen Brothers Mortuary, San Marcos Chapel.
A private interment will be held at San Marcos Cemetery.

Richard Comiskey, 79
CARLSBAD - Richard W. Comiskey, 79, died Wednesday, June 28, 2000, at his home.
Born Sept. 12, 1920, in Des Moines, Iowa, he had lived in Carlsbad for 10 years. He worked as a firefighter with the Long Beach Fire Department for 25 years. He was retired from the U.S. Navy and was a member of the USS Kalinin Bay CVE-68.
He was preceded in death by a son, Steven James Comiskey, in 1992.
He is survived by his companion of seven years, Sally Dudrow of Carlsbad; a son, William Comiskey of Ramona; two brothers, James Comiskey of Omaha, Neb. and Robert Comiskey of Rogers, Ark.; two sisters, Ruth Anderson of Des Moines, Iowa and Leone Fiske of Kansas; and three grandchildren.

Donald Verner Hagstrom, 81
Donald Verner Hagstrom, 81, died Monday, June 26, 2000, at Corona Regional Medical Center in Corona.
Born June 15, 1919, in Sioux City, Iowa, he lived in Corona for two years. He worked for Sparklettes, starting out as a route salesman and then as an account executive for the last 10 years.
Mr. Hagstrom is survived by his wife, Bernadine Hagstrom of Corona; daughter Joan Manley of Corona; sister Jo Ann Simeral of Hawthorn; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, June 30, 2000, at Miller-Jones Mortuary.

Richard Daryl Smith, 51
Richard Daryl Smith, 51, died Sunday, June 25, 2000, of cancer, at his home in Temecula.
Born July 24, 1948, in Osage, Okla., he lived in Temecula for one year. He worked for Horizon Casino in Lake Tahoe.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Pauline C. Smith of Temecula; mother Ruth Smith-Yeider of Arizona; sons Danile Wolanski of Palmdale and Craig Wolanski of Monrovia; brother Carl Smith of Alta Loma; sister Patricia Harrison of Arizona; and four grandchildren.
A private cremation will be held.
