Jane Johnston, 89
CARLSBAD - Jane Ellen Anderson Johnston, 89, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001 of natural causes.
Born Aug. 27, 1911, in Seattle, she lived in Carlsbad for 60 years. She had been a teacher at Newport High School. She graduated from Pomona College with a MBA in Spanish and also studied in Barcelona, Spain. She was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II; a member of the Women's Club of Carlsbad; and at one time served as arts chairman and a member of the American Home Group.
Mrs. Johnston was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Angus Johnston, in 1986. She is survived by sons and daughter-in-law David Johnston of Carlsbad and Gordon and Cherryl Johnston of Carlsbad and grandchildren Kristin, Jayson and Paige.
At her request no memorial service will be held. Her ashes will be placed at Eternal Hills with her husband.
Rita Plount, 76
VISTA - Rita Zenobia Plount, 76, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Tri City Medical Center.
Born June 13, 1924, in Louisiana, she lived in Vista for 45 years. She was retired from Hughes Aircraft as an inspector.
Mrs. Plount is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Michael and Mary Ellen Plount of Valley Center; daughter Barbara Bartletti of Oceanside; sisters and brother-in-law Julia Porche of New Orleans, Velma and Claude Trepagnier of Baton Rouge, La., Delores Ricard of Louisiana; and grandchildren Adrienne and Jim Jones of Huntington Beach, Shana Plount of Escondido, Jay Bartletti of Oxnard and Nathan Plount of Escondido.
Visitation was scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. with rosary recited from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, at Eternal Hills Chapel. A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today, Jan. 26, at St. Francis of Assisi Church with the Rev. Bill Haney officiating. Burial will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.
Richard Berger III, 57
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Richard L. Berger III, 57, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, of lymphoma.
Born Oct. 3, 1943, in Quantico, Va., he lived in Anchorage for 11 years. He was an insurance analyst for the state of Alaska. He graduated from Fallbrook High School in 1961 and San Diego State University in 1966.
Mr. Berger is survived by his wife of 34 years, Jean Berger of Anchorage, Alaska; parents Richard L. Jr. and Emma Berger of Fallbrook; daughter De Anna Berger Holm of Columbia, Mo.; brother Gary Berger of Fallbrook and sister Linda Berger of Valejo.
A private cremation is planned.
Lela Tyrell, 93
CARLSBAD - Lela Deaton Trayer Tyrell, 93, died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000.
Born in 1906 in Omaha, Neb. she lived in Carlsbad, Miles City, Mont., San Marcos, Seattle and Denver.
Mrs. Tyrell was preceded in death by husband Edward Trayer in 1960, second husband Harry Tyrell in 1979 and daughter Elizabeth in 1986. She is survived by children, Gene Trayer of South Carolina, Bonnie Niles of Miles City, Montana, Jack Trayer of Carlsbad and Patricia Christopherson of Miles City, Montana; sisters Arline Whitt of Galiton, Missouri, Marcile Gerlt of Mt. Veron, Washington.
Mrs. Tyrell was a nurse. She was proud to hang two stars in her window for her sons during World War II. Her grandfather served in the war between the states and she was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
A memorial is scheduled for Feb. 10 at the Trayer home in Carlsbad.

RAMONA - Frances "Jean" E. Ralph, 77, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at her home.
Born May 19, 1923, in San Diego, she lived in Ramona for 16 years. She was a homemaker and a member of the Ramona United Methodist Church. She enjoyed music, sewing, knitting and bead work and played the organ.
Mrs. Ralph is survived by her husband, John L. Ralph of Ramona, sons Paul F. Simmons of Rancho Bernardo; daughter, Susan M. Grady of Rancho Bernardo, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Viewing is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 26, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Bonham Bros. & Lee Ramona Chapel. The funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at Bonham Bros & Lee Ramona Chapel. Born July 20, 1920, in Amalf, Columbia, he lived in Vista for 10 years. He was a self employed Real Estate broker, retiring in 1982.
Mr. Llano is survived by his wife of 54 years, Bertha V. Llano of Vista; sons and daughter-in-law John and Maria T. Born Sept. 22, 1919, in San Francisco, she lived in San Marcos for 15 years. She had been a clerk for the U.S. Navy for 10 years.
Mrs. Phillips is survived by her brother and sister-in-law LeRoy and Inge Morse of Lake Forest; niece Teena Morse of Lake Forest; nephew Terry West of Sun City, Ariz., and grand nephew Cody Thompson of Lake Forest.

Elvy Henderson, 79
SAN MARCOS --- Elvy Ketonen Henderson, 79, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at her home of renal failure.
Born March 23, 1921, in Helsinki, Finland, she lived in San Marcos for 23 years. She was a homemaker, member of the San Marcos Lutheran Church, the Christian Women's Club and was fluent in Finnish, Swedish and English.
Mrs. Henderson is survived by her husband of 59 years, Chalmers "Hank" Henderson of San Marcos; daughters Janice Campana of San Diego and Elsa Henderson of Longmont, Colo., and grandchildren Kristina Turley and Michelle Panek.
A memorial service will be held in the latter part of February at San Marcos Lutheran Church with the Rev. Mark Knutsen officiating. A private cremation and scattering at sea will take place.

ESCONDIDO - Josephine Mendoza, 71, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, in San Diego from a heart attack.
Born March 18, 1929, in San Antonio, she lived in Escondido for three years. She was a homemaker and a member of Poway Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Mrs. Mendoza was preceded in death by her husband, John Mendoza on June 2, 1992. She is survived by son John Mendoza Jr. of San Diego; daughters Eliza Mendoza of Oakland, Vicky Topping of San Diego, Juanita Gay of Escondido and Elizabeth Dailey of Lakeside; sister Mary Segura of Glendora and grandchildren Laura Mendoza, Lisa Peters, Sommer Gay, Vanessa Gay, Mark and Michael Topping and Charly and Richard Dailey.

WILDOMAR - Hector M. Borja, 73, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at Kaiser Foundation Hospital in Riverside.
Born Nov. 1, 1927, in Los Angeles he lived in Wildomar for 14 years. He worked for 47 years at a lapper/finisher for Rockwell International. He was an avid basketball fan. Mr. Borja served in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1947.
Mr. Borja is survived by brothers Oscar Borja of Montebello and Teddy Borja of Escondido and sister Gloria Arangua of La Puente.

Linda Buchholz, 41
POWAY - Linda "Lindy" Buchholz, 41, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001.
Born April 30, 1959, in San Clemente, she lived in San Diego for 23 years and was currently living in Poway. She worked at University of California San Diego in the pulmonary department and for Instrumentation Laboratory as a data management specialist.
Ms. Buchholz was preceded in death by her father Gerald L. Browning, Sept. 7, 1992. She is survived by mother Carol Pritchett and father Bill Pritchett both of Sun City, Ariz., 12-year-old son Jeffrey M. Buchholz; 9-year-old daughter Victoria L. Buchholz; brothers Brian Browning, Jerry Browning and Jim Browning and sister Keri L. Browning.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 29, at East Hills Christian Church in Spring Valley. There will be a private interment at Greenwood Memorial Park in San Diego.

ESCONDIDO - Vernon B. Hildebrand, 74, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at his home.
Born in 1926, in Kulm, N.D., he lived in Escondido for 16 years. Mr. Hildebrand served in the U.S. Army in 1946 as a private first class. He was a fisherman and world traveler. He celebrated his 50th anniversary in 1997. He was self employed and retired in 1975.
Mr. Hildebrand was preceded in death by his daughter, Margo Hildebrand in 1966. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Edna Hildebrand of Escondido; son and daughter-in-law Keith and Coleen Hildebrand of San Diego; daughter and son-in-law Bonita and Gene DiPietro of Escondido; brother and sister-in-law Elmer and Yvonne Hildebrand of Kulm, N.D.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Born Aug. 15, 1925, in Sault Saint Marie, Mich., he lived in Oceanside for two years. He worked at Chesie System Railroad, retiring on Feb. 14, 1986. He was a member of the Navy Aircore, Eagles, Retired Railroad and Boater of Whitelake.
Mr. Mackie is survived by his wife of 45 years, Angeline Mackie of Oceanside; son Arne Mackie; daughters Debbie Shelp and Sheyl Ann Mackie both of Oceanside; son-in-law Gary Shelp of Oceanside; grandchildren Chris Rector of Arizona and Ryan Shelp of Vista and great-grandchild Gabby Rector of Arizona.

TEMECULA - Adeline Bednarchuk, 70, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at St. Bernardino Medical Center in San Bernardino.
Born Dec. 25, 1930, in Selkirk, Manitoba, Canada, she lived in Temecula for six years. She worked for Safeway stores for over 30 years and was an active member of the St. Catherine's choir and of the senior center.
Mrs. Bednarchuk was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Bednarchuk on Aug. 23, 1993. She is survived by her mother, Katherine Lysaichuk Shuhyta of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; son Michael Andrew Bednarchuk of Temecula and sister and brother-in-law Florence and Kazimer Yaworski of Dunnellon, Fla.

MURRIETA - Benny L. Chavez, 75, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at Western Medical Center in Anaheim.
Born May 19, 1925, in Los Angeles he lived in Murrieta for nine years. He worked for 40 years as a plasterer for Orbie Garritano Plastering Company and enjoyed fishing and hunting with an M-1 rifle. Mr. Chavez served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945 and received the Purple Heart.
Mr. Chavez is survived by his wife, JoAnn Chavez of Murrieta; daughter Michelle Peralta of Sherwood, Ore.; brother Louis Chavez of Las Vegas and sister Irene Tuters of Las Vegas.

Born March 18, 1923, in Chicago, she lived in Murrieta for five years. She was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing, quilting, knitting, gardening, arts and crafts, cooking, vacationing and the outdoors.
Mrs. Seastrom is survived by her husband, Milton Seastrom of Murrieta; sons and daughters-in-law John and Alaine Seastrom of Rifle, Colo., and James and Ellena Seastrom of Huntington Beach; daughter and son-in-law Lynn and Greg Short of Atlanta.
