Ronald Kull, 74
POWAY - Ronald Raymond Kull, 74, died Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at Pomerado Hospital.
Born Sept. 23, 1926, in Cleveland, he lived in Poway for 27 years. He was a math teacher for the Poway Unified School District, working at Mt. Carmel High School from 1977 to 1989 and Rancho Bernardo High School from 1990 until retiring in January 1992. He was a member of Stoneridge Country Club.
Mr. Kull is survived by his wife of 34 years, Jill Kull of Poway; daughters and sons-in-law Carole-Ann Kull-Bader and Todd Bader of Phoenix and Kristy Elizabeth Kull and Israel Ruiz of Poway; and four grandchildren.
A private family service, with inurnment was held.
The family suggests memorial donations to the Deaf Community Services of San Diego, 7851 Mission Center Court, Suite 310, San Diego, CA 92108.

Orville Mercier, 89
OCEANSIDE - Orville C. Mercier, 89, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, of pneumonia, at Tri-City Medical Center.
Born March 15, 1911, in Minnesota, he lived in Oceanside for 10 years. He worked for the city of Los Angeles before retiring.
Mr. Mercier is survived by his wife of 44 years, Marilyn E. Mercier of Oceanside; son and daughter-in-law Roger Kirk and Linda Mercier; grandchildren Scott, Lorraine, Michael, John, Jill and Blake; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held Friday, Jan. 5, at Green Hills Mortuary. A funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, at Green Hills Chapel, with Roger Kirk Mercier officiating. Interment will follow at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes.

Eva Castro, 69
CARLSBAD - Eva Quintana Castro, 69, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at Tri-City Medical Center.
Born Oct. 26, 1931, in Baja California, she lived in Carlsbad for 48 years. She was a homemaker for 48 years.
Mrs. Castro was preceded in death by her husband, Rito Castro, in 1981. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Ernesto and Mary Castro of Riverside, Ray and Annette Castro of Carlsbad and Tony and Loretta Castro and Manuel Castro, all of Vista; daughter Gloria Gonzalez of Oceanside; sister and brother-in-law Jovita and Manuel Rosa of Ensenada, Mexico; 16 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at noon Tuesday, Jan. 9, at Eternal Hills Mortuary, with the Rev. Anaya officiating. Interment will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Mara Isgrig, 77
OCEANSIDE - Mara Isgrig, 77, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at Pleasant Care of Vista.
Born Oct. 5, 1923, in Madrid, Spain, she lived in Oceanside for 11 years. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Isgrig is survived by her husband of 44 years, Franklin Isgrig of Oceanside; and brother Arturo DeOsuna Morales of Madrid.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 8, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park Garden of Adoration.

Ramon Maldonado, 95
OCEANSIDE - Ramon I. Maldonado, 95, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at his home.
Born July 4, 1905, in Puerto Rico, he lived in Oceanside for 53 years. He was a self-employed painter.
Mr. Maldonado was preceded in death by his wife, Julia Maldonado; and grandson Ramon Maldonado III. He is survived by his sons, Ronald Maldonado and Raymond Maldonado; daughters Vivian Buser and Lori Vanderveen; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, at El Camino Sorrento Valley Chapel, with the Rev. Orvile Hiepler officiating. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. at El Camino Memorial Park.
The family suggests memorial donations to a charity of choice.

Lois Doublet-Biszmaier, 81
ESCONDIDO - Lois Sabin Doublet-Biszmaier, 81, died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, of respiratory failure, in Escondido.
Born Aug. 31, 1919, in Spokane, Wash., she lived in North County for 31 years. She worked for Tri-City Medical Center before retiring on April 23, 1999.
Mrs. Doublet-Biszmaier is survived by her daughters, Jacqueline Doublet of Escondido and Michelle Kutrufis of Bethel Park, Pa.; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A private cremation is planned, with cremains to be scattered at sea by the U.S. Navy.
The family suggests memorial donations to the Alzheimer's Association, 8514 Commerce Ave., San Diego, CA 92121.

Richard Stickler, 89
OCEANSIDE - Richard Franz Stickler, 89, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at Palomar Medical Center.
Born Jan. 10, 1911, in Vienna, Austria, he lived in Oceanside for 23 years. He was co-owner of Lincoln Park Paint Center.
Mr. Stickler is survived by his wife of 65 years, Agnes Stickler of Oceanside; sons and daughters-in-law John and Donna Stickler of Garden Grove and Brian J. and Martha Stickler of Alaska; sister and brother-in-law Emily and Paul Heck of Illinois; and five grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park. Burial will follow.

Joseph Garwood, 87
AKRON, Pa. - Joseph S. Garwood, 87, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, at Maple Farms Nursing Home in Akron.
Born in Syracuse, N.Y., he lived in Akron and had lived in Fallbrook. He served as director of civilian personnel at Camp Pendleton in the U.S. Navy during World War II, retiring after 30 years and worked in industrial relations for the U.S. government. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Fallbrook.
Mr. Garwood was preceded in death by his wife, Joan M. Faris Garwood. He is survived by his daughters, JoAnn Siva of Fallbrook, Judy Barnum of El Cajon, Jean Cram of Pine Valley, Virginia Cumbus of Montgomery, Ala., and Susan Liebl of Lancaster, Pa.; 17 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Louise Stiefel, 84
MURRIETA - Louise Ruth Stiefel, 84, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, of cardiomyopathy, at Chancellor Place in Murrieta.
Born May 8, 1916, in Long Pond, Pa., she lived in Murrieta for two years. She was a homemaker for 65 years and enjoyed helping her family and friends, listening and sewing. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Anaheim 5th Ward, Santa Ana 2nd Ward and, most recently, the Cal Oaks Ward.
Mrs. Stiefel is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lorie and Harry Miles of Murrieta; and sister Clara Robertson of Stroudsburg, Pa.
A funeral service was held Wednesday, Jan. 3, at Las Brisas Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Murrieta. Burial took place Thursday, Jan. 4, at Forest Lawn Cypress.

Ethern Avery, 69
SUN CITY - Ethern F. Avery, 69, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001.
Born Oct. 17, 1931, in San Clemente, she lived in the Canyon Lake/Sun City area for 23 years. She was a self-employed medical transcriber for 35 years. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, water-skiing, reading, golfing, playing cards and dominos, sun bathing and watching game shows. She was a member of Canyon Lake Community Church, the Rebeccas of Bellflower and was a Lionist of Canyon Lake.
Mrs. Avery is survived by her daughters, Cheryl Kidwell of Canyon Lake and Dolonna Brush of Murrieta; sons Doug Maupin of Sun City and Donald Avery of West Hollywood; brother Jack Killen of Lakewood; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 8, at Canyon Lake Community Church.

Emilia Frederick, 77
MENIFEE - Emilia M. Frederick, 77, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, of cancer, at her home.
Born Sept. 18, 1923, in Chicago, she lived in Menifee for 11 years. She was a homemaker for 54 years and served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1945. She was a member of the Palmilla ladies social committee and the Menifee Lakes Country Club. She enjoyed arts and crafts, making quilts and Christmas ornaments. She also enjoyed drawing and animals.
Mrs. Frederick is survived by her husband, Orin Frederick of Menifee; sons George Frederick of Phoenix and John Frederick of Reno, Nev.; daughters Pamela Gruber of Simi Valley and Peggy Williams of Ketchum, Idaho; sister Jeanne Gershun of Chicago; brothers Chester Kroll of Lake Tomahawk, Wis., Norman Kroll of Downey and Vit Kroll of Park Ridge, Ill.; sister Lucianna Nielson of Bellflower; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A funeral service was held Thursday, Jan. 4. Burial will take place at Riverside National Cemetery.

Marjorie Reid, 92
VISTA - Marjorie Garnet Reid, 92, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at Tri-City Medical Center.
Born Feb. 1, 1908, in Ohio, she lived at SilverGate Retirement in San Marcos for two years and lived in Vista for two years.
She was an accountant for the civil service before retiring.
A private graveside service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 10, at Eternal Hills Mortuary, with the Rev. Jan Cook officiating. Burial will follow.

M. John Ober, 75
VISTA - M. John Ober, 75, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, in La Jolla.
Born March 14, 1925, in Norfolk, Va., he lived in Vista for 12 years.
He graduated from San Diego State University and was an engineer for the Gemini and Apollo programs at Northrop and for the Mars Viking program at Goodyear Aerospace.
He managed several tennis clubs in the New Jersey area. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was past president of Balboa Tennis and San Marcos Parachute clubs, past vice president of Lions International in El Cajon.
He was one of the original volunteers for the Sheriff's Department, Vista Volunteer Patrol and was a VPP administrator for several years.
Mr. Ober is survived by his wife of 44 years, Mary Ober of Vista; sons William Ober of Vista, Guy Ober of San Luis Obispo, Paul Ober of Arlington, Texas, Mark Ober of San Diego and John Ober of Absecon, N.J.; daughters Kathy Ober of San Francisco and Deborah Craycraft of Littleton, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, at Allen Bros. Mortuary, Vista Chapel. Inurnment will take place at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego.

Wilford Naylor, 72
ENCINITAS - Wilford "Bill" Naylor, 72, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at Scripps Encinitas Hospital.
Born Feb. 4, 1928, in Salt Lake City, he lived in Encinitas for 37 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a certified auto mechanic, working for Art Meyer Service in Solana Beach and was the owner of Naylor Auto Repair before retiring in 1985. He was a life member and past exalted ruler of the Encinitas Elks Lodge and a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a volunteer at the V.A. Hospital in La Jolla through the Elks program.
Mr. Naylor was preceded in death by his mother and father, Beatrice and Wilford Naylor; and his brother, Robert Naylor. He is survived by his wife, Carol Naylor; daughters and son-in-law Christine Naylor of Santa Rosa and Judy and Steve Burns of Carlsbad; sons and daughters-in-law Jeffrey and Teri Naylor of Kirkland, Wash., and David Naylor of Escondido; sisters and brothers-in-law Donna and Jerry Smith of Hawaii and Betty Gregory of Fredericksburg, Va.; brother and sister-in-law Ward and Mary Naylor of Escalon; seven grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of his life will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, at Encinitas Elks Lodge in Cardiff.

James Day, 60
HEMET - James William Day, 60, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, of cancer, at his home.
Born May 22, 1940, in Yakima, Wash., he lived in Hemet for three months and had lived in Oceanside from 1973 to 2000. He was a systems administrator for Cubic Applications Inc. and served in the U.S. Navy from 1958 to 1978.
He was a member of the Oceanside Harley Hogs and enjoyed restoring Mustangs and playing with his grandchildren.
Mr. Day was preceded in death by his mother, Martha Bernice Simon; and father, Vernon W. Day.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Ilaria Day of Hemet; sons and daughter-in-law James Edward "J.D." Day of Chino and Andrew and Kelly Day of Hemet; daughter Peggy Sue Day of Hemet; sister and brother-in-law Terri and Ted Huff of Las Vegas; grandchildren James Robert, Joshua Andrew, Yasmeen Cori; honorary grandchildren Taylor, Katy and Dillon; and nephew Tim and wife Sara Day of Sparks, Nev.
Viewing was held Saturday, Jan. 6, at Miller-Jones Mortuary. A funeral service followed, with inurnment at Menifee Valley Memorial Park in Sun City.

Marilyn Sims, 68
CARLSBAD - Marilyn Jean Sims, 68, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, in San Diego.
Born Jan. 13, 1932, in Vallejo, she lived in Carlsbad for 53 years and had lived in Guam and Pearl Harbor. She attended Oceanside-Carlsbad High School, graduating in 1949 and graduated from Knapp College of Nursing in Santa Barbara.
She worked as a nurse at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara and at the naval hospital at Camp Pendleton before retiring in 1985. She worked at Sonny's Automotive in Carlsbad before retiring again in 1995.
Mrs. Sims was preceded in death by her mother and father Emily and Abner Clift.
She is survived by her husband of 43 years, James Sonny Sims of Carlsbad; and daughters Laurie Sims and Leslie Sims, both of Oceanside.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at Eternal Hills Mortuary.
The family suggests memorial donations to the American Cancer Society for breast cancer research, 12405 Rancho Bernardo Road, Suite 100, San Diego, CA 92128.
