Gladys Hall Duval, 93

OCEANSIDE - Gladys Hall Duval, 93, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, at Tri-City Hospital in Oceanside.

She was born in Greenville, Texas, Feb. 1, 1907, the daughter of William O. and Alice C. Ellis Whitaker. She attended school as a child in Ramsay, Tenn., and graduated high school in Mount Olive, Miss. For a time, she worked in a cotton company office before making a trip to Bradenton, Fla., where Gladys met Charles M. Hall. They were married in 1925. Gladys and Charles were active members of the Masonic and Eastern Star of Florida.

After the death of her husband, Charles, in 1950, Gladys moved to California and lived in Santa Monica, Whittier and Oceanside. For 10 years, she worked as a salesperson and teacher for Singer Sewing Machine Company, a position she really enjoyed. She married Emile Duval in 1957 and he died in 1982 after which she moved to the Oceanside area.

Mrs. Duval was preceded in death by her son, Charles McDonald Hall III. She is survived by two brothers, William O. Whitaker of Alexandria, Va., and Ellis Whitaker of Hurricane, Utah; a sister-in-law, Ruth Whitaker of Lakeside, Calif.; brother-in-law Ben Hall of Winchester Ky.; sister-in-law Betty Hall of Orlando, Fla.; sister-in-law Edna Hall of Lakeland, Fla.; sister-in-law Carowin Wright of Orlando, Fla. She is also survived by her two sons and their wives, W. Douglas and Elda Hall of Carlsbad, Calif., and William and Pat Hall of Temecula, Calif., and daughter-in-law Lelo Hall of Whittier, Calif. She has eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, at St. Anne's Episcopal Church, 701 West Street, Oceanside.

In memory of Gladys Duval, the family suggests donations to St. Anne's Endowment Fund, 701 West Street, Oceanside, CA 92054.

John Fuhrmann, 79
OCEANSIDE - John F. Fuhrmann, 79, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, at Tri-City Medical Center.

Born Sept. 5, 1920, in Springfield Township, Marquette County, Wis., he lived in Oceanside for 47 years. He owned and operated Oceanside Plating Works for 20 years before retiring.

Mr. Fuhrmann is survived by his wife of 47 years, Rosalie Fuhrmann of Oceanside; son and daughter-in-law Jeffry and Beth Fuhrmann; sisters and brothers-in-law Vaudice Mills of Endeavor, Wis., Zona and Edgar Miske of Allenton, Wis., Norbert Berger of Montello, Wis.; sisters-in-law Dolores Fuhrmann of Milwaukee, Margaret Meyer of Weaverville, N.C., and Eleanor Berger of Portage, Wis.; and numerous nephews and nieces.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date in Wisconsin.

The family suggests memorial donations to the American Heart Association, PO Box 3625, San Diego, CA 92103; or Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1900 South Nevada St., Oceanside, CA 92054.

Dacia Settergren, 25

SAN DIEGO - Dacia Spring Settergren, 25, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, in an automobile accident.

Born Feb. 21, 1975, in Grand Rapids, Mich., she lived in San Diego. She was a software support representative for Symitar Systems Inc. in San Diego.

Ms. Settergren is survived by her mother and father, Deborah and Robert "Bruce" Settergren of Poway; brothers and sister-in-law Reuben and Tina Settergren of Redding and Tony Settergren of Poway; sister and brother-in-law Emily and Alex Najera of San Diego; grandparents Don and Shirley Keena and Robert and Dorothy Settergren, all of Grand Rapids, Mich.; and great-grandmother Beatrice Keena of Tampa, Fla.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today, Feb. 24, at Living Way Church in Poway. A private cremation with inurnment is planned.

The family suggests memorial donations to the Settergren Family Care of Living Church, PO Box 242, Poway, CA 92064.

Alice Willis, 82

OCEANSIDE - Alice N. Willis, 82, died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, she lived in Oceanside for 35 years. She was a registered nurse state inspector.

Mrs. Willis was preceded in death by her husband, Richard O. Willis, in 1995. She is survived by her sons Stephen Johnson of Carlsbad and Ronald A. Johnson of Lavern; stepson Lary Willis of San Diego; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

No service will be held at the request of the deceased.

Walter Day, 13 months

CARLSBAD - Walter Mitchell Day, 13 months, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, in San Diego.

Born Jan. 8, 1999, in San Diego, he lived in Carlsbad his entire life.

Walter is survived by his mother and father, Kristi and Rick Day of Carlsbad; grandparents Lou and Diana Taucher of Valley Center, Dieter Hulfachor of Manhattan Beach and Alan Day of Seaview; uncle Bob Day of Carlsbad; aunt Tary Day of Huntington Beach; and godparents Tom and Lesa Fitzpatrick of Carlsbad.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. today, Feb. 24, at Valley Center Community Church. A private graveside service with burial will take place at Valley Center Cemetery.

Dionicia Kaeding, 64

SAN MARCOS - Dionicia Kaeding, 64, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at San Diego Hospice.

Born Oct. 9, 1935, in Mexico, she lived in San Marcos for 13 years. She was a homemaker for 27 years.

Mrs. Kaeding is survived by her husband of 27 years, James Kaeding of San Marcos; son and daughter-in-law David and Juana Kaeding of San Marcos; stepson and stepdaughter-in-law Don and Geraldine Kaeding of Saugus; stepdaughter and stepson-in-law Kathy and Vern Hatfield of Escondido; brothers Jose Fausto of Mexico and Leandro Fausto of Tijuana; sisters Felipa Fausto, Juana Fausto, Ramona Fausto, Fortunata Fausto, all of Mexico, Maria Fausto of Mexicali, Isabel Fausto of Tijuana and Francisca Fausto of La Puente; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today, Feb. 24, at Allen Brothers Mortuary, San Marcos Chapel. A Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at St. Francis Catholic Church, with the Rev. Patrick Mulcahy officiating. Interment will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, with Deacon Rafael Victorin officiating.

The family suggests memorial donations to San Diego Hospice, 4311 Third Ave., San Diego, CA 92103.

Stanley Smith, 79

CHULA VISTA - Stanley L. Smith, 79, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, in El Cajon.

Born Jan. 5, 2000, in California, he lived in Chula Vista for 12 years. He was a self-employed carpenter for 20 years and served in the U.S. Navy.

Mr. Smith is survived by his son, Dennis Smith of Boston; daughter Nancy Smith of Pala; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation and viewing will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Feb. 24, at Berry-Bell & Hall Chapel. A private cremation is planned.

The family suggests memorial donations to the American Heart Association, San Diego County Chapter, PO Box 3625, San Diego, CA 92163-1625.

Paul Kempf, 81

ENCINITAS - Paul "Joveno" Stuart Kempf, 81, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at his home.

Born April 25, 1918, in Dubuque, Iowa, he lived in Encinitas. He attended Iowa State college and University, majoring in psychology and engineering. He served in the Merchant Marines and the U.S. Navy as a navigator during World War II, attaining the rank of lieutenant. He attended Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration and worked for Empire Ordnance Corp., Inland Steel, The Crane Co. and Hughes Aircraft before starting his own company, Western Optics. He also started Metron Optics Inc. and Metron Marker Co.

Mr. Kempf is survived by his wife, Pilar Kempf of Encinitas; sons Charles Kempf of Oceanside and Karlton Kempf of Murrieta; stepson Julio Moreno of Sun Valley, Idaho; daughter Karla Kempf-Howell of Encinitas; stepdaughter Lucy Rodriguez of San Diego; and grandchildren Audrey Howell, Kira Kempf, Kristy and James Rodriguez, Wendy, Juie, Laura and Lucy Moreno.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today, Feb. 24, at Encinitas Mortuary. A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at St. Leo's Mission Church in Solana Beach. A private inurnment will take place at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma.

Lillian Houston, 91

MURRIETA - Lillian Marie Houston, 91, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, in Murrieta.

Born Feb. 20, 1909, in Elwood, Neb., she lived in Murrieta for one year and previously lived in Fallbrook for 30 years. She was an assistant engineer at North American Rockwell for 15 years.

Mrs. Houston was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas R. Houston in July 1979. She is survived by her sons, Dave Houston of Bend, Ore., and Donald Houston of Dana Point; daughters Patsey Sherohman of Bullhead City, Ariz., Phyllis Nogalas of Salton Sea, Donna Marie Houston of Murrieta and Judy Brush of Borrego Springs; 25 grandchildren; and 45 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, at Berry-Bell & Hall Chapel, with the Rev. Jim Manning of Calvary Chapel in Temecula officiating. A private cremation is planned.

Terry Cousins, 42

ESCONDIDO - Terry Lynn Cousins, 42, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, in Escondido.

Born Jan. 15, 1958, in Kankakee, Ill., he lived in San Diego County for 24 years.

Mr. Cousins is survived by his mother and father, Beatrice and James Cousins of Escondido; sisters and brothers-in-law Mellody Peters of Fresno, Tina and Bob Lopez of Los Banos and Anita and Dave Warczakowski of Escondido; nephews Dusty, Rusty and Sonny Lopez of Los Banos, Jimmy Peters of Fresno and Austin Warczakowski of Escondido; and nieces Caitlyn Warczakowski of Escondido, Becky Frandsen of Fowler, Annie Whitehead of Clovis and Cindy and Dawn Peters of Fresno.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at San Rafael Parish in Rancho Bernardo. A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. following visitation. Burial will follow at Dearborn Cemetery.

Eldon Graham, 68

ESCONDIDO - Eldon Lavar Graham, 68, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, in Escondido.

Born April 29, 1931, in Murray, Utah, he lived in Escondido for 13 years. He was a warehouseman for Hill Air Force Base in Layton, Utah for 20 years before retiring. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955 and was a member of the Rincon Valley Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Escondido Elks Lodge No. 1687. He was a volunteer with the Elks Weekly Bowling program for handicapped children.

Mr. Graham is survived by his wife of 43 years, Laura Graham of Escondido; son Terry Graham of San Diego; daughters and son-in-law Teresa and Terrell Garrett of Utah and Tammy Graham of Escondido; and four grandchildren.

Visitation and viewing will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 25, in the Relief Society Room at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 1917 E. Washington Ave. in Escondido. A funeral service will follow at 10 a.m., with Bishop Charles Neilsen officiating. A private burial will take place at Riverside National Cemetery.

Patricia Patton, 58

TEMECULA - Patricia "P.J." Patton, 58, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, at her home.

Born May 12, 1941, she lived in Temecula for 29 years. She owned Patton's Nursery and was a member of the Lions Club and the Temecula Town Association and was a substitute teacher at St. Catherine's Church.

Mrs. Patton is survived by her daughters, Catherine Marie Patton of Temecula and Denise Ann Patton Krause of Sacramento; and grandchildren Noel Marie Hollis, Chanelle Jentry, Francesca Glover, Jonathon Ryan and Mitchell Hunter Kim.

Cremation Society of Riverside County is handling arrangements.

Schuyler Phillips, 91

PERRIS - Schuyler Waldo Phillips, 91, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, at his home.

Born Dec. 23, 1908, in Perris, he lived in Perris for 91 years. He was a superintendent for the Redlands School District for 23 years and was a member and past president of the Rotary Club of Redlands and the Barstow Rotary.

Mr. Phillips is survived by his wife, Onita Phillips of Perris; son Llad Phillips of Santa Barbara; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A private visitation is planned. A graveside service is scheduled for 1 p.m. today, Feb. 24, at Perris Valley Cemetery. Burial will follow.

CHICO - Luceal Miller Zinn, 95, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, of congestive heart disease in Chico.

Born Aug. 25, 1904, in Garrett, Pa., she lived in Murrieta for three years and in Corona for 34 years. She was a homemaker for 70 years and a member of St. Martha's Catholic Church in Temecula and St. Edward's in Corona.

Mrs. Zinn is survived by her daughters, Cordelia Carr of Woodinville, Wash., and Mary Loney of Chico; brothers Danny Miller of Florida and Harold Miller of Ohio; sisters Mildred Bittinger of Maryland, LaVerne Kirian of Ohio and Romaine Smith of Maryland; seven grandchildren, including Richard Carr of Murrieta; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., with a vigil at 5:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 25, at Thomas Miller Mortuary. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, at St. Martha's Catholic Church in Murrieta. Burial will take place at All Souls Cemetery in Long Beach.
