Charles Goodwin, 58

HENDERSON, Nev. - Charles Hale Goodwin, 58, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, in Las Vegas.

Born Feb. 16, 1941, in Bellflower, he lived in Vista for 28 years before moving to Henderson. He was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years.

Mr. Goodwin is survived by his mother and father, Etta and Elmer Goodwin of Vista; and brother Arthur Goodwin of Huntington Beach.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 12, at Allen Brothers Mortuary, Vista Chapel, with the Rev. Charles L. Kepler officiating. Burial will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 14, at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier.

Earl Brown, 78

ESCONDIDO - Earl M. Brown, 78, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, of pneumonia and lung disease, at Palomar Medical Center.

Born Oct. 31, 1921, in Carbondale, Ill., he lived in Escondido for one year. He was a supervisor for United Airlines reservations.

Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his wife, Vesta Brown, in 1995. He is survived by his son, Daniel Brown of Escondido; daughter Sandy Davis of Albany, Ore.; brother Howard Brown of St. Louis; grandchildren Liza Russel, Mat Brown, Chris Riehl and Jane Crouch; and great-grandchildren Michelle and Nicole.

A private cremation is planned with cremains to be scattered at sea.

The family suggests memorial donations to a hospice of choice; or the American Cancer Society, 12405 Rancho Bernardo Road, Suite 100, San Diego, CA 92128.

Balboa Cremation is handling arrangements.

Helen Brady, 92

PALA - Helen M. Brady, 92, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, in Pala.

Born Aug. 28, 1907, in Los Angeles, she lived in Pala for 30 years. She was an executive secretary for the American Red Cross and a 1928 graduate of the University of Southern California.

Mrs. Brady was preceded in death by her husband, Arden "Steve" Brady, in 1985. She is survived by her sons, James A. Brady of Temecula and Richard Brady of Escondido; eight grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 14, at Oak Hill Memorial Park. Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m.

Philomena DeFloria, 75

VISTA - Philomena Ann DeFloria, 75, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, in Vista.

Born Aug. 8, 1924, in Greensburg, Pa., she lived in Vista and had lived in Oceanside for 40 years. She was a shipping clerk for the U.S. Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton for 29 years.

Mrs. DeFloria is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Wanda Patterson of Vista; and sisters Genevieve Constantine of Leigh Acres, Fla., and Mayna Price of Beauford, S.C.

No formal service is planned. A private family inurnment will take place.

Ethel Devine, 93

TORRANCE - Ethel W. Devine, 93, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000.

Born in Rosnow, Poland, she immigrated to the U.S. in 1930. She worked as a radio announcer in Cleveland and New York City and designed and manufactured Tyrolian-style mother-daughter apparel in Los Angeles.

Mrs. Devine is survived by her son, Arthur J. Devine of Escondido and granddaughters Sonya Devine, Hannah Devine and Dora Devine of San Diego.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, Feb. 9, at El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego.

Janis Fitch, 43

CARLSBAD - Janis Fitch, 43, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, of breast cancer, at her home in Carlsbad.

Born April 19, 1956, in La Jolla. she lived her entire life in San Diego County. She was a graduate of Carlsbad High School and attended Palomar Community College. She graduated from San Diego State with a degree in physical education and a teaching credential. She as a pharmaceutical representative for 11 years.

Mrs. Fitch is survived by her husband, Dr. Craig Fitch of Carlsbad; mother Charlotte Thatcher of Carlsbad; father Robert Johnson of Old Fort, N.C.; sons Jayce Fitch, Jeffrey Fitch and Connor Fitch, all of Carlsbad; and sister Jane Singh of Encinitas.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 13, at the San Dieguito United Methodist Church in Encinitas. A private cremation was held.

The family suggests memorial donations to Youth Tennis of San Diego, 4490 W. Point Loma Blvd., San Diego, CA 92107.

Sam Ferrantino, 79

ESCONDIDO - Sam Ferrantino, 79, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, in Escondido.

Born March 20, 1920, in Sioux City, Iowa, he lived in Escondido for two years. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 11 years and the U.S. Army for 16 years, retiring in 1968. He practiced law before retiring and was a member of Toastmasters, the American Legion, the San Diego Democratic Council and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Ferrantino was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathleen Ferrantino, in 1960. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Daylene Ferrantino of Poway; daughter Frances Ferrantino of Escondido; brothers John Ferrantino and Michael Ferrantino, both of San Leandro; one sister in San Leandro; and grandchildren Christa, James, Shannon and Jessica.

Viewing will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 14, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary. A graveside service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma, with full military honors.

Arden Hanson, 79

SUN CITY - Arden P. "Red" Hanson, 79, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, at his home.

Born April 15, 1920, in Erhard, Minn., he lived in Sun City and had lived in Fallbrook. He attended a division of the University of Minnesota in Crookston and did defense work during World War II. He was secretary for the Farm Bureau and president of the Reche Club and the Fallbrook chapter of the Antique Car Club of America.

Mr. Hanson was preceded in death by his brother, Clinton Hanson, and sister Harriet Hanson. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Edna Hanson; and brother Dwight of Underwood, Minn.

A memorial service will be held at 11 p.m. Monday, Feb. 14, at the Fallbrook Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Peter Hintzoglou officiating. A private interment will take place at the Masonic Cemetery.

Clifford Whynaught, 58

OCEANSIDE - Clifford D. Whynaught, 58, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 2000, in Oceanside.

Born Oct. 13, 1941, in North Carolina, he lived in Oceanside for 48 years. He was the owner of Walt-Bilt Transmissions.

Mr. Whynaught is survived by his mother, Dorothy Whynaught of Vista; son Clifford L. Whynaught of Oceanside; daughters Pamela Dugan, Nichole Whynaught and Kassie Whynaught, all of Oceanside; brother David Whynaught of Vista; sister Elizabeth Riggs of Washington; and six grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Feb. 10, at Eternal Hills Mortuary. A Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 11, at St. Mary's Star of the Sea, with the Rev. John Dolan officiating. Burial will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

The family suggests memorial donations to Hospice of the North Coast, 5421 Avenida Encinas, Suite N, Carlsbad, CA 92008.

Irene Jessee, 88
OCEANSIDE - Irene B. Jessee, 88, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, of heart failure, in Oceanside.

Born May 18, 1911, in Hackensack, N.J., she lived in Oceanside for 21 years. She worked for TRW in Redondo Beach, retiring June 1, 1976. She was an office assistant for a real estate broker and a member of the San Luis Rey Mission Church and a volunteer for the American Association of Retired Persons and VITA.

Mrs. Jessee was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore S. Jessee, on June 9, 1951. She is survived by her son, Ted Jessee of Westlake Village; sister Marie Levitzki of Oceanside; and grandchildren Mark Jessee of Thousand Oaks and Laura Jessee of Las Vegas.

A Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, at Mission San Luis Rey Chapel, with the Rev. Michel Gagnon officiating. Burial will take place at a time to be determined in New Jersey. It is requested that no flowers be sent.

The family suggests memorial donations to a charity of choice.

Peggy Parrent, 61

SAN DIEGO - Peggy Anne Parrent, 61, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at Palomar Medical Center.

Born Aug. 5, 1938, in Mount Calm, Texas, she lived in San Diego for one year. She was a bookkeeper and office manager in banking and real estate.

Mrs. Parrent is survived by her husband of 37 years, Larry Parrent of San Diego; son Michael Parrent of Fort Worth, Texas; daughter Debra Marr of Acton and Theresa Monaghan of Lake Forest; brothers Fred Lambert and Kenneth Lambert, both of Texas; and grandchildren Megan Monaghan, Jack Monaghan and Derrick Marr.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 14, at Oak Hill Memorial Park, with the Rev. Kennedy of St. Mary's Catholic Church officiating. Inurnment will follow.

The family suggests memorial donations to the San Diego Brain Injury Foundation, PO Box 84601, San Diego, CA 92138-4601.

Mildred Yarber, 85

ESCONDIDO - Mildred F. Yarber, 85, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, at a local convalescent home.

Born Oct. 11, 1914, in Pittsburgh, she moved to Escondido from Santa Cruz one year ago. She was a homemaker for 25 years and a member of the Brookdale Club in Brookdale.

Mrs. Yarber is survived by her sons, Gordon Yarber of San Marcos and Robert Yarber of Loleta; daughters Irene Ewald of Tehachapi and Ginny Jones of Costa Rica; grandsons David Kofranek of Corvallis, Ore., and Brad Stark of Westlake; and granddaughter Sara Kofranek of Walnut Creek.

A private cremation is planned with cremains to be scattered at sea.

Jane MacNeil-Deal, 101

ESCONDIDO - Jane MacNeil-Deal, 101, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at her home.

Born May 2, 1898, in Denmark, she lived in Escondido for 13 years. She was a homemaker for 70 years.

Mrs. MacNeil-Deal was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Deal, in 1997. She is survived by her grandson and his wife, Eric MacNeil-Gordon and Pauline of Adelaide, South Australia; and great-grandchildren Gabrielle MacNeil-Gordon and Zachary MacNeil-Gordon, both of Adelaide.

Visitation was held Saturday, Feb. 12, at McLeod Mortuary. A cryptside service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, at Holy Cross Mausoleum in Culver City, with the Rev. Michael Bunny officiating. Entombment will follow at Holly Cross Mausoleum.

Harold Brimley, 89

ESCONDIDO - Harold Duane Brimley, 89, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, at a local hospital.

Born April 5, 1910, in Salt Lake City, he lived in Escondido for 25 years. He was an aerospace manager for McDonnell-Douglas for 33 years and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

Mr. Brimley was preceded in death by his wife, Faye Brimley, in 1997. He is survived by numerous nephews and nieces.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 14, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in San Marcos. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m., with Bishop Daniel S. Primavera officiating. Interment take place following the service at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Mary Prinz, 99

SUN CITY - Mary Prinz, 99, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2000.

Born Feb. 18, 1900, in Hungary, she lived in Sun City for five years. She worked as a packer for Lobes Candy manufacturer in Chicago for two years.

Mrs. Prinz is survived by her daughter, Katherine Anderson of Sun City; three grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., with a rosary recited at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 15, at Evans-Brown Sun City Mortuary. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, at St. Vincent's Catholic Church in Sun City. Burial will take place at El Toro Cemetery.

Geneva Shafer, 89
CARLSBAD - Geneva Shafer, 89, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at a local convalescent home.

Born Sept. 8, 1910, in Bend, Ore., she lived in Carlsbad and Escondido for 13 years. She was a member of the Brookside Country Club in Canton, Ohio.

Mrs. Shafer was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel S. Shafer, in 1975. She is survived by her brother, W. Robert Copthorne of Fallbrook; sisters Annette Waldrop of La Jolla and Alice Cashin and Betty Copthorne, both of Palm Desert; and stepgrandchildren Sally Finch, Susan Rumphorst and John S. Shafer.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, at Carlsbad-by-the-Sea, 2855 Carlsbad Blvd., Carlsbad. A private cremation with inurnment at Sunland Memorial Park in Sun City, Ariz., is planned.
