Elizabeth Hodgson, 89
VISTA - Elizabeth Haviland Hodgson, 89, died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, in Norwalk.
Born on March 15, 1911, she lived in Vista for 27 years. She graduated from high school in Neleigh, Neb., from nurses training at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles, and worked in the nursing field for several years. She was a member of the Vista Women's Club.
Mrs. Hodgson was preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Coral Culver. She is survived by her sons, Robert Hodgson of Pasadena and Thomas Hodgson of Vista; daughter Margaret Chichester of Cerritos; a sister in Laguna Beach; grandchildren Christie Hodgson-Clarkson of La Canada, Danny Hodgson of Pasadena, Wendy Chichester of Corona, Scot Chichester of Lakewood and Josh Hodgson of Irvine; and great-grandchild Emily Clarkson of La Canada.
Interment will take place on Friday, Jan. 5, at Inglewood Park Cemetery.

Rose Devaney, 100
ESCONDIDO - Rose S. Devaney, 100, died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at her home.
Born Jan. 10, 1900, in Chicago, she lived in Escondido since the early 1950s. She worked for Western Electric (Lucent Technology) for many years, retiring in 1960.
Mrs. Devaney is survived by her nieces, Judy Reighkncht, Judy McDiarmat and Barbara Jenkins; and friends Barbara and Mike Fogerty, Anne Galindo, Margaret Fox and Kaye Howard.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Escondido. Interment will take place at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Zoe Dorsa, 83
OCEANSIDE - Zoe Dorsa, 83, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, in Vista.
Born Aug. 13, 1917, in New York City, she lived in Oceanside for 13 years. She worked for Seton Hill College before retiring in 1987 and was a member of Mission San Luis Rey.
Mrs. Dorsa was preceded in death by her mother, father and brother. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Betty Dorsa of Oceanside.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, at Mission San Luis Rey. Burial will follow at Mission San Luis Rey Cemetery.
The family suggests memorial donations to St. Thomas More Building Fund, PO Box 4415, Carlsbad, CA 92018.

William Ecker, 89
VISTA - William B. Ecker Sr., 89, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at Pleasant Care of Vista.
Born Sept. 21, 1911, in New Windsor, Md., he lived in Vista for 48 years. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean War, retiring after 23 years as CW03. He was a member of the Vista Elks Lodge No. 1968 and Past Exalted Ruler from 1971 to 1972, a member of the Vista Masonic Lodge No. 687 F&AM, Scottish Rite Bodies, Vista Hi-12, National Sojourners Chapter No. 243, Retired Officers Association, Camp Pendleton, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 7041 in Vista the United Methodist Church of Vista and the Vista Planning Commission.
Mr. Ecker was preceded in death by his son, David R. Ecker, on Feb. 23, 1995; and brothers Donald F. Ecker and James O. Ecker. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Edith M. Ecker of Vista; sons William B. Ecker Jr. and Richard L. Ecker, both of San Marcos; sisters Catherine Fitze, Sarah Barnes and Mary Smith, all of Westminster, Md.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, at Allen Bros. Mortuary, Vista Chapel, with the Rev. Lanny Arrowsmith and Vista Elks Lodge No. 1968 BPOE officiating. Interment with honors will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.
The family suggests memorial donations to California-Hawaii Elks Major Project, c/o Vista Elks Lodge No. 1968, PO Box 367, Vista CA 92085.

Daniel Ayers, 77
VISTA - Daniel R. Ayers, 77, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at his home.
Born April 9, 1923, in Osceola, Iowa, he lived in Vista for 10 years. He was an electronics technician before retiring.
Mr. Ayers is survived by his daughter and granddaughter, Linda Dayyat and Jessica Dayyat of Huntington Beach.
A graveside service was held Saturday, Dec. 30, at El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego.

Santos Martinez, 74
ESCONDIDO - Santos A. Martinez Sr., 74, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, in Escondido.
Born Nov. 1, 1926, in Dallas, he lived in Escondido. He worked for the U.S. government civil service before retiring in 1984.
Mr. Martinez is survived by his wife, LaLa P. Martinez of Escondido; mother Sofia L. Martinez of Carlsbad; son and daughter-in-law Santos P. Jr. and Isabel Martinez of Oceanside; daughters Mary Anne Martin and Sally Martinez, both of Escondido; brothers and sisters-in-law Ben and Margaret Martinez, Peter and Irene Martinez and Paul Martinez, all of San Marcos, Alex Martinez of Valley Center, Ricardo and Gloria Martinez of Oceanside, Joe and Tere Martinez of Chula Vista and Albert and Marcia Martinez of Vista; sisters and brothers-in-law Gila Martinez of New Mexico, Mary Felix of Murrieta, Connie and John Gonzales of Oceanside, Annie Villegas and Virginia Martinez, both of Carlsbad, and Sophi and Manuel Contreras of San Marcos; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church of Carlsbad. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, at the church. Interment will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Del Dillard, 90
VISTA - Del Dillard, 90, died Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at Vista Knolls.
Born Dec. 25, 1909 in Hedley, Texas, she lived in California since 1933 in both Downey and Vista. She was a real estate broker in Downey and in Vista from 1971 to 1982.
Mrs. Dillard was preceded in death by her husband, I.N. "DW" Dillard, in 1981; and her daughter Joan Naylor, in 1981. She is survived by three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and sisters Kate Fulton of Amarillo, Texas, and Onalove Haley of Vista.
Interment took place at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Elaine Morris, 77
ESCONDIDO - Elaine Audrey Morris, 77, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, of a brain tumor, in Escondido.
Born Aug. 12, 1923, in Aurora, Ill., she lived in Escondido for 15 years. She was a nursing assistant before retiring in 1995. She was a volunteer for the Palomar Medical Center Auxiliary and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Mrs. Morris is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Christopher and Linda Perry of Sutherlin, Ore., Marck Morris and Matthew Morris, both of San Diego, and Michael and Lynn Morris of Oceanside; daughters and son-in-law Pamela Perry of Arizona, Meridith Morris of Oceanside and Heather and Wayne Piekarski of Valley Center; sisters and brothers-in-law Gloria and Ross Lewis of Fallbrook and Marilyn and Bill Feldmann of South Bend, Ore.
A funeral service will be held at noon Tuesday, Jan. 2, at Eternal Hills Mortuary, with the Rev. David Plank officiating. Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Herschel Smith, 96
VISTA - Herschel Alfred Smith, 96, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, in Vista.
Born Oct. 13, 1904, in Warren, Okla., he lived in Vista for 12 years and had lived in Carlsbad for 18 years. He was a buyer for Lockheed for 20 years.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Celia Ellen Smith, in 1997. He is survived by his son, Jerry E. Smith of Sierra Madre; daughter Carolyn Sue Tanner of Vista; 14 grandchildren; and 52 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Vista, with Bishop Morris Vance officiating. Burial will follow at 1 p.m. at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier.

Elaine Beneke, 79
ESCONDIDO - Elaine Campbell Beneke, 79, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, in Escondido.

Born April 28, 1920, in Oto, Iowa, she lived in Escondido for 25 years. She was a secretary for Daley & Heft law office for 20 years and was a member of the Neighborhood Church for 25 years.

Mrs. Beneke was preceded in death by her brother, Wayne Campbell, in 1963. She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Larry Beneke of Escondido; son and daughter-in-law Dale and Lorie Beneke of Forest, Va.; sister Jane Shebal of Escondido; and grandchildren Evan and Jessica Beneke, both of Escondido and Josh, Tyler and Brandi Fitzgerald, all of Forest.

Viewing will beheld from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary. A funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, at the Neighborhood Church in Escondido. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

The family suggests memorial donations to the Neighborhood Church Missionary Fund, 1001 Country Club Lane, Escondido, CA 92026.

Bettye Burnham, 69

ESCONDIDO - Bettye Joy Burnham, 69, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, in Escondido.

Born Sept. 16, 1930, in Chattanooga, Tenn., she lived in Escondido for 25 years. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Burnham is survived by her husband of 25 years, Gerald Burnham of Escondido; sons Carl Harper of Nashville, Tenn., Michael Harper of Chattanooga, Thomas Harper of Foley, Mo., and Daniel Burnham of New York; daughter Susan Thomas of Valley Center and Donnette Burnham-Ragg of Placentia; brothers Robert Allen of Flushing, Mich., and Edward Allen of Chattanooga; and 14 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 1, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary Chapel.

Isidoro Pizzo, 88

ESCONDIDO - Isidoro Pizzo, 88, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, in San Diego.

Born Oct. 29, 1911, in Philadelphia, he lived in Escondido for 15 years. He was a self-employed retail salesman for 30 years and was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, both in Williamstown, N.J.

Mr. Pizzo is survived by his wife of 62 years, Maddalena Pizzo of Escondido; son Anthony Pizzo of Escondido; daughters Josephine Spadaro of Washington Township, N.J., Fina Jennings of Vineland, N.J., Nina Coladonato of San Diego, Mary Muratore of Temecula and JoAnn Ormsby of Aurora, Colo.; brother Joseph Pizzo of Collingswood, N.J.; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, at the Church of the Resurrection. A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. following viewing. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Arto DeMirjian, 93

OCEANSIDE - Arto DeMirjian, 93, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, in San Marcos.

Born May 16, 1906, in Charpet, Turkey, he lived in Oceanside for 30 years. He was a self-employed photographer.

Mr. DeMirjian was preceded in death by his wife, Althea DeMirjian, in 1993. He is survived by his son, Arto DeMirjian Jr. of New York City.

A graveside service will be held at a later date.

The family suggests memorial donations to the Armenian General Benevolent Fund for Orphans and Education, 55 E. 59th St., New York City, NY 10022.

Helen Henneberger, 89

SAN MARCOS - Helen Louise Henneberger, 89, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, at her home.

Born Sept. 14, 1910, in Palmyra, Mo., she lived in San Marcos for 17 years. She was a homemaker for 63 years and a volunteer for the March of Dimes and the Parent-Teacher Association.

Mrs. Henneberger was preceded in death by her husband, Milton Michael Henneberger, on Aug. 15, 1994. She is survived by her son, Michael W. Henneberger of Escondido; daughter Mary Lou Fuller of Oceanside; sisters Goldie Donelson and Genevieve Bax, both of Palmyra; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, at Allen Brothers Mortuary, San Marcos Chapel, with the Rev. Sam Brumit officiating. A private cremation with interment is planned.
