Nevada County Clerk-Recorder: Public Records
NOTE ABOUT PUBLIC RECORDS RESEARCH
In Nevada County, research in public records can be carried out at the two research libraries: the Foley and the Searls. (See Libraries on the menu). Except for vital records, copies of most documents can be ordered from Foley Library. If you prefer looking at original property books, you must go to the Clerk Recorder.
Indexes to vital records (computer printout) are available at Searls and Foley Libraries. After obtaining the 'book' and 'page' of the desired records, you may order copies of the original documents from the Clerk-Recorder.
The index to property records (Kitts Index) is available at Searls and Foley Libraries as well as at the Clerk Recorder. The actual property documents can be viewed at the Clerk-Recorder's Office or on film at Foley Library. Photocopies can be ordered at Foley Library or from the Clerk-Recorder. Tax records--a valuable resource in Nevada County-- can only be viewed at Foley LIbrary.
The index to Wills is available on cards in the "people" catalog at Searls Library. The actual wills are available to view--but not to photocopy--at Searls Library. Indexes to probates can be viewed on film, and photocopied, at the Superior Court or at Foley Library.
