Mildred Thomson 
A memorial service will be held for Mildred Thomson, 80 of Blair, Nebraska, at the First Christian Church of Blair. Born in Blair, Nebraska August 31, 1918, died in Blair, October 16, 1998. Mrs. Thomson came to Dixon in 1946 and married the late John Thomson. In 1995 she returned to Nebraska and lived in a retirement home. She served in the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps, during World War II. She served as City finance director until 1973, when she became Dixon's city clerk until retirement. She was a member of the Dixon Community Church and treasurer of the Wheels for Meals program. She is survived by Darlene Jensen of Kennard Nebraska and many nieces and nephews.

Henry E. "Buck" Dupree 
Henry E. "Buck" Dupree, 64, died of a heart attack while visiting Huntsville, Alabama on September 11, 1998. A memorial service was held in Huntsville at Temple B'Nai Sholom on September 15, 1998. Mr. Dupree was the sales manager of Electric Garage, the Chrysler/Dodge dealership in Woodland. He was very active in sports and also volunteered for the American Legion of Woodland. Survivors include his wife Barbara Dupree of Woodland; son James Earl Dupree and wife Zaylah of Texas; four daughters Donna Casillas and husband Joe Jr. of Woodland; Amanda Wallace and husband David of Alabama; Deborah Chaney and husband John of Alabama and Mary Kay Cooper and husband Buddy of Alabama; He is also survived by 14 grand children, two great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. 
Memorial donations may be made to the American Legion Softball fund for children and seniors, the National Kidney Foundation, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society or the charity of the donor's choice. 

ROBERT J. SULLIVAN 
Mr. Robert James Sullivan passed away at the age of 82 on Tuesday evening, September 8, 1998 in Vacaville after a long illness. 
A Mass of the Resurrection was held Friday in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Vacaville with Fr. Vincent O’Reilly officiating. Interment was in the Silveyville Cemetery. Mr. Sullivan had been a railroad conductor with Southern Pacific Railroad for 34 years, prior to retiring. 
He was born on September 5, 1916 in Springfield, Massachusetts. He is survived by his wife, Dolores of Vacaville; daughters Joan Sullivan-Hays and Barbara Sullivan both of Dixon; a brother, John Sullivan of Arletta, CA; a sister, Frances Thibodeau of Newington, CT; and grandchildren Calra Ganaway of Akon, SC, Cari Lizarraga of Dixon, Carl Hays of Dixon, Adrianne Mann and Jeffrey Nichols both of Rochester, NY.

MAX R. MORGAN 
Mr. Max R. Morgan passed away at the age of 70 on Saturday, September 12, 1998 at the Kaiser Foundation Hospital in Vallejo after a long illness. 
Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, September 16th at 11 am in the Nadeau Family Funeral Home in Vacaville. Rev. Vic Matson of Community United Methodist Church in Fairfield will conduct the service. Interment will follow in the Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery. 
Max had been a mechanic for the past 28 years. His first 12 years were with International Harvester in Montana and then with the City of Dixon. He then worked for the Chrysler/Plymouth dealership in Vacaville until he retired. He was born on April 14th, 1928 in Elgin, Montana. 
He is survived by his wife Delores of Vacaville; daughters Rhonda Brambley of Vacaville and Maxine Morgan of Ekalaka, Montana; a brother, Harold Morgan of Santa Maria, California and three grandchildren - Robert of Stockton, and Laurisa and Randall of Vacaville.

TESSIE AGATHA JACKSON
Tessie Agatha Jackson passed away at the age of 87 on Sunday, September 13, 1998 at Vaca Valley Hospital in Vacaville after a brief illness. She had been a resident of Dixon and Fairfield for 50 years. 
Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, September 16th, at the Bryan-Braker Funeral Home in Fairfield. Rev. Joseph Ternullo of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Dixon and Rev. Catharine Morris of Dixon United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will be in the Suisun-Fairfield Cemetery. 
Tessie worked at the Fairfield Hospital for 20 years until she retired. She was a loving mother, grandmother and wife and was an avid lover of Reno and Tahoe activities. She was a member of senior citizens organizations in Fairfield, South Lake Tahoe and Salem, Oregon, and a member of the Crystal Rebekah Lodge in Suisun. 
She is survived by daughters Rena Wood of Dixon, Edith Patron of Salem, OR and Ellen Zawidski of Pheonix, AZ, a brother, Charles Makare of Carson City, NV, 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. 
Her husband John Jackson preceded her in death in 1982. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to any Senior Center of the donors choice. 

CONNOR MARCUS MINER
Connor Marcus Miner was born January 5, 1998 in Fairfield, California. He died unexpectedly on August 18, 1998 in Dixon, California. Our darling and happy baby is survived by a large loving family.
Parents Rick and Valerie Miner of Dixon; Sisters Shannon Miner of Dixon and Katie and Erin MIner of Marysville; Brother Patrick of Fort Lewis, Washington; Grandparents Don and Elaine Love of Noxon, Montana, Barbara Miner of Fair Oaks, Richard and Patricia Miner of Sacrmento; Great-grandmothers Nilah Love of Eaton, Indiana and Julia Franklin of Savannah, Georgia; Great-aunt Carol Love of Pnama City, Florida; aunts and uncles - Dave and Candy Cook, Tory and Missy Love, Todd and Gail Love; and five cousins. Our angel unaware has left us.

Elizabeth N. Glide 
Elizabeth N. Glide passed away at the age of 83 in Sacramento on March 13, 1999. A native of Dixon, she lived in Mendocino for 30 years. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband Elsen Glide. 
She is survived by her sons Peter, William and Michael Glide, and two sisters, Sadye Petersen and Jeanette Pearson. She was the proud grandmother of Stephanie, Michael B., Mary, Leslie, Laura, Julie, Megan, Janet and Nick Glide, and great-grandmother of Leticia Glide. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. 

David Vasquez Ornelas 
Born in Mexico on January 6, 1921, David Vasquez Ornelas passed away on March 14, 1999 in Vallejo, California after a long illness at the age of 78. 
Mr. Ornelas lived on his rural Vacaville ranch and was a Solano County resident for 55 years. He served in the US Army during World War II and worked on numerous ranches until he became self-employed as a labor contractor. He was also employed at UC Davis in the Farm Services program. He is survived by his wife, Amparo Ornelas of Vacaville; sons and daughters in law, Daniel and Sylvia Ornelas and Richard and Carol Ornelas all of Vacaville; a brother, Carmen Ornelas; 7 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Jesse Ornelas and a brother, Trinidad Ornelas. 

Lela Martin
Funeral services for Lela Martin were held Monday, March 8, 1999, at the Milton Funeral Home in Dixon. Pastor Steve Rost presided at the services. Mrs. Martin was born in Hamburg, Iowa, on October 14, 1924. She passed away on March 1, 1999, at the age of 74. She attended school in Iowa and then Solano County, where she worked many years as a cosmetologist.
She had two daughters, Barbara Kay McClannahan and Judith Ann Monteneg, both preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Fred Martin; grandchildren Jaime Vasquez, Sherry Haight and Tina Turner; and three great-grand children April, Darrin and Bailey. Mrs. Martin lived in Dixon for the past 22 years. Her hobbies were sewing, crafts and golf. She was also an amateur radio enthusiast. Interment was at Silveyville Cemetery.

Luz Torres 
Luz Torres passed away on Monday, March 1, 1999 at the age of 60. She dies in the presence of her children, Aurora, Chava, Daniel, Letty, Chela and Tito. Services will be Wednesday, March 3. Visitation will be at Carpenter’s Funeral Home from 5 to 9 pm. The Rosary will be offered at 7 pm. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Thursday, March 4 at 1 pm at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Dixon. Burial will follow immediately after the Mass at the Silveyville Cemetery. 
Luz was born in Guanajuato, Mexico. Early in the 1960’s she and her husband Salvador decided to pursue the American Dream and settled in Dixon, CA. She dedicated all her time and effort to the needs of her children and her devoted faith in the Catholic religion. Having succeeded in providing her children the financial and emotional support, she decided it was time for her to pursue her dreams. She learned to read, drive and eventually became a United States citizen. Once her dream was finally being fulfilled, she experienced a life-threatening stroke that paralyzed the left side of her body. With lots of love and her will to achieve, she regained most of her physical capabilities within one year. 
After several years of misdiagnosed medical evaluation, she switched medical providers and was informed she had cancer. She had the love, determination and support to battle any obstacle that came between herself and her children until cancer destroyed her physically. She lost her physical battle with cancer, but won the battle of life with love and God. 

Norman E. Jahn
Norman E. Jahn passed away February 7, 1999. He was 82 and a lifelong resident and a descendent of the Jahn family of Dixon. Born December 3, 1916 to Johnnie and Lottie Jahn, he was the father of five. He is survived by Lorraine, his wife for 61 years. sons Edward (Ed) and Larry and a daughter, Susan. Edmund (Ted) and Ronald (Ron) proceeded him in death. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and his sister Anna Marie. 
Educated in Dixon, he became a well known carpenter and finished cabinet maker. He was instrumental in the construction of the present Dixon Community Church - refurbishing stained glass windows and customizing the pews. In his active years he was a member and Deacon of the church. A veteran of the Marine Corp and Coast Guard, he was active in the American Legion. He was also active in the Dixon Game Club an Dixon Dance Club. An avid hunter and fisherman and enthusiastic with his children’s participation in sports. He was also well known to have his German shorthaired dog at his side. A memorial service will be held at 1 pm February 18th, 1999 at the Dixon Community Church to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donation to the American Diabetes Association or Disabled American Veterans. 

Sarah Adams
(Sept. 16, 1905 - Feb. 5, 1999)
Sarah Jane Adams, 93, died Friday at Sutter Solano Medical Center following a long illness. 
Mrs. Adams was born in Lettsworth, La., to the late Robert and Letha Anderson Boykins. She lived most of her life in Paducah, Ky., before relocating to California in 1990, first residing in Sacramento then moving to Vallejo the following year. 
She was an active member of the Mothers Board at the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. She enjoyed crocheting and regularly participated at the Douglas Senior Center on Wednesdays with the craft clubs. 
Survivors include her son, Randolph D. (Barbara) of Vallejo; four grandsons, Malcolm, Anthony, David and Andre; and four great-grandchildren. 
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Cooley & Riolo Mortuary, with the Rev. Joseph K. Flowers officiating. Burial will be in the Maplelawn Cemetery in Paducah, Ky. 

Mae Belle Lamb
(Sept. 27, 1909 - Sept. 6, 1999)
NAPA - Mae Belle Lamb, 89, died Sept. 6 in a hospital in Napa after a short illness. 
Mrs. Lamb ws born in Tempe, Ariz., and had resided in Vallejo for 30 years and in Napa for two years. She was a registered nurse for many years. She and her husband owned and operated kennels in Arizona and California for many years. 
She was an active member of the Vallejo Moose Lodge No. 468. She enjoyed gardening, painting, playing golf, walking and doing crafts. 
Mrs. Lamb was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin Lamb, in 1980 and a daughter Lorna Hunt in 1965. 
Survivors include three grandchildren, Shelia M. (Roger) Arnaud of Stateline, Nev., Jeanne (Tom) Kosten of Cobb, and Lynnett (Todd) Hunt Gorman of Forestville, and two great-grandchildren. 
A graveside service celebrating her life as well as her 90th birthday will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the Colusa Cemetery, Colusa. Inurnment follows.

Peter Michael Gurnari
(Nov. 23, 1939 - Jan. 6, 2000)
Peter Michael Gurnari, 60, died Thursday at North Bay Medical Center, Fairfield, from a sudden illness. 
Mr. Gurnari was born in Oakland, but lived in Vallejo most of his life. 
A former Vallejo (1964-1967) and San Francisco (1969-1975) police officer, Mr. Gurnari retired in 1975 due to a medical disability. 
He was a U.S. Navy veteran. 
Mr. Gurnari belonged to the Vallejo Lodge 559, B.P.O.E., and was a member of the San Francisco Police Officers Assn., the Retired and Disabled Police of America; Vallejo Police Activities League and the U.S. Golf Association. 
He is survived by his wife, Sue; daughters Rhonda Marie Talley of Missouri, Karen M. Gurnari of Napa and Kimberley Forte of Vacaville; his father Peter D. Gurnari of Redding; a sister, Loreli Welch of Vallejo; a brother, Charles Hubbard of San Jose; and six grandchildren. 
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wiggins-Knipp Funeral Home. Visitation is from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Wiggins-Knipp. 
There will be a private inurnment.

S.H. Rice
(June 30, 1916 - Feb. 13, 1999)
S. H. "Hank" Rice, 82, died Saturday at home after a short illness. 
A native of New York, Mr. Rice was a resident of Vallejo for 35 years. He was a 30-year veteran of the U.S. Navy working in Data Systems and retiring in 1969 as one of the first E-9 master chiefs. He served during World War II, and in Korea and in Vietnam. 
Mr. Rice was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association Branch No. 8, Vallejo Moose Lodge No. 468 and the Meals on Wheels. He also worked as an IRS volunteer at the senior center for many years helping seniors prepare their income tax returns. 
His wife, LaVern, preceded him in death in 1983. Survivors include two daughters, Joan Rowe of Fremont and Jill Taylor of Salinas; and a brother, Fred of Tracy. 
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Colonial Chapels, with the Rev. Stanley Cornils and the Fleet Reserve Association Branch No. 8 officiating. Inurnment will be private in the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery.

Manuela Gutierrez
(Jan. 1, 1905 - Oct. 10, 2000)
Manuela Toledo Gutierrez, 95, died Tuesday at a local hospital following a long illness. 
Mrs. Gutierrez was born in the Philippine Islands and was a Vallejo resident for 72 years. She was a homemaker and in earlier years, she and her sisters were a singing trio, and worked in Vaudeville with Buster Keeton and many others. She was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church. 
She was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip in 1970. 
Survivors include daughter, Paulette Chanco of San Francisco; sons, Phil Jr. (Dolores) of Vallejo and Roberto (Karyn) of Georgia; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. 
Visitation from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at Colonial Chapels, Vallejo. Vigil service at 7 p.m. Sunday at Colonial Chapels. Mass of Christian burial at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church. Burial in All Souls Catholic Cemetery. 

Robert Garrett Jr.
(April 2, 1918 - Dec. 10, 2000)
Robert Ray Garrett Jr., 82, died Sunday at a local hospital following a short illness. 
Mr. Garrett, commonly known as "Ray," was born in Halls, Tenn. and was a Vallejo resident since 1958. He graduated from high school in Oceana, Va. in 1936 and enlisted in the Navy ten days after graduation. He served in World War II and the Korean War and retired with the rank of Lt. Comdr.. after 22 years of service. He was also employed as an instructor at California Maritime Academy and then obtained a Masters in Social Work. He then served as a social worker and welfare administrator in Solano, Napa, San Joaquin, and Yolo counties. He also provided Family, Marriage and Child Counseling for 19 years at the Solano County Social Services Agency. He was admitted to the California Bar at the age of 63 and provided services to low-income individual and families. Mr. Garrett enjoyed golf, and was a member of the American Bar Association, the Retired Officers Association, Elks Lodge 559, and AARP. 
Survivors include his wife, Helen of Vallejo; daughter, Dorothy (Mike) Crowley of South Lake Tahoe; son, Robert III of South Bend, Wash.; brother, Jerry of Barrington, Ill; sisters, Elizabeth Rountrey of Norfolk, Va. and Marguerite Shaffer of Falls Church, Va.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. 
At his request, there will be no services. Private inurnment in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. Arrangements by Colonial Chapels, Vallejo.

John Katz, Ph.D.
(May 10, 1922 - Feb. 15, 1999)
John Katz, 82, died Monday in a Vallejo hospital. 
Born in Talnoye, Ukraine, he immigrated with his mother, brother and sister in 1922, his father having preceded the family, to the United States. They resided in Vera Cruz, Mexico for five years until they could enter the United States in 1928. 
Dr. Katz lived in Portland, Ore. where he attended Failing Grade School, Lincoln High School and Reed College. He was on the tennis team at Lincoln. After attending Reed College, he went to graduate school and then returned to Portland to teach Spanish and biology at Commerce High School, where he also coached tennis. In 1952, he moved to Vallejo teaching and coaching at several East Bay high schools and junior colleges and officiating at tennis events and maintaining his business of tennis coaching. 
He was a member of the Elks Club, the Northern California and U.S. Tennis Associations. 
Survivors include his wife, June Snodgrass Katz; and several nieces and nephews.Memorial services will be at 12:15 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Vallejo Elks Lodge. Entombment is private.

Evelyn Ellen Platter
(Jan. 30, 1922 - Feb. 11, 1999)
Evelyn Ellen Platter, 77, died at a local hospital Thursday after a short illness. 
The native of Texarkana, Ark., was a homemaker. Survivors include a daughter, Mary (Donald Long) Halsey of American Canyon; a son, Robert (Marilyn) Halsey of Washington, D.C., and Stephen (Gabrielle) Halsey of Columbia, Mo.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. 
She was preceded in death by her husband, David G. Platter, in 1998. 
Private family services were held. Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Frank Ella Lee
(May 7, 1925 - Feb. 9, 1999)
Frank Ella Lee, 73, died Tuesday at Sutter Solano Medical Center following a brief illness. 
The native of Glidden, Tex., is survived by daughters Betty Lee of Texas and Joyce Lee of San Francisco; sons Edward Lijon of Vallejo and Hubert Lee, Jr. of Texas. 
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Cooley and Riolo Mortuary in Vallejo with the Rev. N. Reason officiating. Burial will be private.
