John Franklin Shoup came to Shasta County in 1881 to stay, born May 28, 1868, in Green Valley, Tazewell County, Illinois. His father, Franklin Shoup was in the fruit and berry business in Happy Valley. John Franklin and his brother Austin Lee (aka Robert Lee) worked as teamsters hauling timber and supplies to the mines. They also helped raise their half-sister Nancy Maria Shoup, who became Mrs. George Webb.

Laura Belle Webb was born in the Bald Hills near Ono on July 19, 1875. She was the fifth child of James Allen Webb and Elizabeth (McCormick) Webb. After the death of James Webb her mother married Thomas Larkin in Shasta County in 1881. Laura Belle grew up and went to school in the Bald Hills.

John Franklin Shoup and Laura Belle Webb were married by Rev. W. S. Kidder, January 29, 1893. They lived on the Larkin ranch and in several other places in the Bald Hills while farming and raising turkeys. John Franklin continued to team and work on the ranch trying to build up a cattle herd and add land to the ranch. They eventually quit raising turkeys and went to cattle ranching.

John Franklin Shoup passed away December 4, 1944 and Laura Belle Shoup on August 16, 1950. They are buried at the Ono Cemetary.
