Henry Frederick Hawes was born Sept. 18, 1909 on the Hawes Ranch. His parents Jacob Charles and Lillian Grimmer Hawes were Californians of German descent. With his siblings Fred attended Sacramento River School about a mile from their home and then Anderson High School. They did kid things and helped herding animals, plowing and harvesting crops.

 Almeda (Alma) Madeline Scott was born Jan. 1, 1910 near Balls Ferry. Her parents, Andrew Darwin and Marie Louise Kuney Scott, lived in the Jellys Ferry-Palo Cedro area; she and her brother and sister attended those schools before going to Anderson High School where she met Fred.

 Fred and Alma were married Feb. 25, 1928 and spent the first summer cooking for road crews building the road around Mt. Lassen. They used their earnings to fix up a home on the Hawes Ranch to raise their girls: Lillian & Lola

 Fred and Alma moved into Anderson in 1943 and in 1946 were divorced. Alma moved first to Paradise where her family lived and then back to Shasta County where she has remained since.

 Elizabeth (Beth) Smith, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willis E. Smith, was born November 8, 1907 in Orangevale, Sacramento County. She graduated from California State Normal School (later College now University) in June of 1932; she began teaching in Lassen County, then Paradise, but most of her teaching was in Cascade Elementary School District in Anderson.

 Married Sept. 15, 1946 in Paradise, Fred and Beth had one son: John Charles

 Fred loved fishing, hunting and sports, especially baseball as a player and a spectator. He belonged to Odd Fellows in Millville and Redding, the Anderson Grange and the Shasta County Gem and Mineral Society. Fred worked on road construction, Shasta Dam, lumber and ranching. He had a heart attack Feb. 4, 1954 while working at Scott's Mill in Burney.

 Beth was in the WAACs in WWII and was a member of St Michael's Episcopal Church, American Legion, C.T.A, N.E.A, C.R.T.A. and the Anderson Grange. She died July 17, 1989 at her home in Anderson.
