Cliffy was a student and resident of Alpha School and the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home of the West for most of his life. He asked for nothing during his short lifetime, but gave strength, love and compassion to all who knew him. He gave meaning to the word "family" and made our family strong and unified. We have always loved him and will always miss him. His suffering and pain are now gone and God has lifted him up to walk among the angels. Cliffy is survived by his father and mother, Bob and Ruth Kallman, brother Kris and sisters Tina and Carol, plus his aunt Kelly Saunders and many nieces and nephews. They celebrated their Golden Anniversary this past summer, surrounded by family and friends. He resumed his news- paper career, concen- trating on the advertising side of the business. From the Los Angeles Examiner he transferred north in 1952 to work for the San Francisco Examiner. He and Jeanne raised their family in the Bay Area and in those years he represented the New York Times Western Edition, Oakland Tribune, Knight Ridder and Gannett Newspapers and the San Jose Mercury News. In 1988 Dick and Jeanne retired and moved to Carpinteria. Although he spent most of his adult life in Northern California, he considered Carpinteria "home". He was well known around town, and Carpinterians may remember seeing "Grandpa" at all the football, baseball, softball and basketball games in his wheelchair, cheering on his grandchildren. His family and friends, however, will remember him as he was before he became ill... a hardworking, friendly man with a quick wit, who loved a good game of golf and always had a good joke to tell. He loved to dance and had a passion for music and sports, which he passed down to his children and grandchildren. Neighbors often commented that they knew when Dick was home because they could hear the sounds of the "big bands" emanating from the Nichols house. In later years, he served on the Board of the Parkinson Association of Santa Barbara and for several years he published the organization's newsletter. He was first and foremost a family man who never failed to be loving, supportive and "there" for all of us. We will forever be proud to call him "husband", "Dad", "Grandpa" and friend. Our lives are better for having loved him. A graveside service will be held at the Carpinteria Cemetery on Friday, January 7, 2000 at 3:00 pm, followed by a reception for family and friends at the Carpinteria Women's Club. Ottilie was one of eight children born to Theodor and Rosina Reinacher. She emigrated to the United States in 1924, later sending for her youngest sister, Margarethe, who later was to become Mrs Ernest Caesar in Santa Barbara. Sponsored by a family friend in Dayton, Ohio, Ottilie attended Business classes at night in order to improve her English language as well as learning secretarial and accounting skills. Her initial employment was as a cook to the Patterson family in Dayton. The family maintained a winter home in Santa Barbara and brought their domestic staff with them. Once she saw the beauty of Santa Barbara, she never returned to Dayton. She took a position with the J J Newberry store on State Street, eventually becoming the head cashier at the store where she worked for 25 years. She retired in 1969 and enjoyed her retirement by traveling to her native homeland and working as a volunteer with the Emanuel Lutheran Church. A memorial service will be held Thursday morning, 10:30 am in the small chapel at the Welch-Ryce-Haider Funeral Home, 15 E Sola Street, Santa Barbara, CA. passed away at her Ventura residence on December 30, 1999, surrounded by loving family members, after a courageous 7 1/2 year battle with cancer. She was born in the Bronx, New York on October 29, 1944, welcomed by her parents Sidney and Kate Tobias and brother Ivan. Llana attended public schools in the Bronx and Brooklyn, followed by a year at Hofstra University for which she had received a drama scholarship. She returned to complete a BA degree with honors at Brooklyn College, where she majored in political science. In the summer of 1963, she met her husband-to-be Robert Sherman; they were engaged on February 14, 1965 and married 1 1/2 years later. They resided in New Haven, Connecticut, where Llana taught in nearby grade schools while completing a M. S. degree in eduction at Southern Connecticut State College. In June, 1969, the couple moved to Santa Barbara. Llana taught at La Patera Elementary School until the birth of their son, Jonathan Colbert Sherman, in November, 1970. Colbey's sister, Relissa Anne Sherman, was born December, 1972. In 1971, concerned about the adverse effects of rampant growth in the area and how the water demands were exceeding available resources, Llana ran for election to the Goleta Water Board on an environmentalist slate. She was elected and helped influence action that led to the Goleta Water Moratorium. This significant measure dramatically curtailed growth in the area for many years, raising awareness about considering limited natural resources as a central factor in the planning process. Several years after serving a second four-year term on the Water Board, Llana was appointed as the Planning Commissioner for the Third Supervisorial District of Santa Barbara County where she continued her environmentalist efforts. In the 1980's and 1990's, Llana was employed by UCSB, Santa Barbara Research Center, the Community Environmental Council, the City of Ventura, and the County of Ventura, the latter two affording opportunities for her to apply her interest and skills in the water conservation area. Llana's zest for life went well beyond her political and career accomplishments. In 1998, she independently trained for and successfully completed the New York City Marathon. Her long-time outdoors interests included running, walking and biking. Her passions for traveling, jazz music, and the theater took her on many trips. She attended several jazz festivals in New Orleans, among others in Montreal and Monterey. Her appreciation for the theater was lifelong. She enjoyed attending plays and musicals from coast to coast. Her trip to Europe while her daughter Relissa was one in which they both gained a new appreciation for living life to its fullest. Llana's impact on those around her cannot be described fully by words. During her tremendous fight for life over the past 7 1/2 years, she developed a true appreciation for the unique individual qualities her friends and family possess. She was able to depend on many people during the toughest of times and for these relationships, she was very grateful. Those who has the privilege of spending this time with her were rewarded with a new understanding of what courage really means, and respect for what life is really all about. Family and friends are all-important; stress and the "small stuff" are not deserving of time. Thank you Llana for these perspectives. Llana is survived by her mother Kate Tobias of Ventura, daughter Relissa Sherman of San Francisco, son Jonathan "Colbey" Sherman and his finance Tracy Cline of Long Beach, brother Ivan Tobias and his wife Carol of Calabassas Park along with their children Andrea and Debra, her former husband and close friend Robert Sherman of Santa Barbara, Robert's parents David and Goldie Sherman of Florida, and many precious friends in Santa Barbara, Ventura and elsewhere. A memorial service will be held at Temple Beth Torah, 7620 Foothill Road in Ventura on Friday, January 7, 2000, at 2:00pm. KESTER, Erik Adriaan Age 15, passed away on January 4, 2000. Erik was born on September 21, 1984 at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. He and his family resided in Carpinteria until moving to Goleta in June 1998. He attended Canalino Elementary School and then Santa Barbara Christian School. He was currently a sophomore at Dos Pueblos High School. Erik is survived by his parents, Phil and Debi Kester, grandparents Nick and Paula Kester and grandparents Bo and Wanda Pedroia, along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Erik was preceded in death by a sister, Jordyn Lynn Kester, and by a grandfather, Harry Mengis. Erik's story is one of courage and character. His sister, Jordyn, then 1 year old, was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia in 1988. Erik, then 4 years old, became her donor and best pal through two bone marrow transplants. Sadly, neither transplant was successful, and Jordyn died in 1989. In the following years, Erik transformed the Kester home from one of grief to one of joy. He played soccer and basketball. He enjoyed rollerblading and surfing with his pals. With his parents, Erik shared hobbies like Karate and watching movies and pets named Pockets, Stripes, and Keesy. Together, they made countless friends at the El Montecito Presbyterian Church. Then, in July of 1997, Erik was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia. Erik, then 12 years old, faced the long struggle leading up to and beyond his own bone marrow transplant. Erik simply lifted his spirit to a higher power. Unable to play contact sports, he became an avid golfer. Unable to surf the ocean, he learned to surf the web. Already a good student, he became better. He smiled and joked and he loved. He also won that battle. His bone marrow transplant was successful. In September of 1998, Erik came home. In his new home in Goleta, Erik continued his academic excellence. He added new hobbies like making custom CDs or playing on-line games with friends. He went to school, he went to church, he went to the movies. Everywhere he went, he took love and hope with him. And then he was gone. In December, 1999, Erik contracted viral pheu- monia. He succumbed after a battle lasting several weeks. A quote from Erik's autobiography reads, "After my life on earth is done, I plan to go up and say hello to my sister and granddad, and then spend eternity with all my family, friends, and my Lord." A private graveside service will be held on Monday, January 10 at 2PM at Santa Barbara Cemetery followed by an open celebration of Erik's life at 3PM at El Montecito Presbyterian Church, 1455 E Valley Rd, Montecito. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 8, 2000 at the Welch-Ryce-Haider Goleta Chapel followed by died suddenly of a heart attack on Tuesday, January 4. He was 78. The Vail family, in a century-old partnership with the Vickers family, owned and managed Santa Rosa Island, a 54,000 acre cattle ranch off the Santa Barbara coast. Alexander "Al" Lennox Vail was born November 24, 1921 in Los Angeles, California, thirty minutes after his twin brother Russ. Al attended the University of California at Davis and UCLA. He began working full-time on Santa Rosa Island as a cowboy in 1942 and became general manager of the ranching operation in 1962. Al was respected throughout the livestock community for his ethics and stewardship of the bounteous resources of an island that was in his family for almost 100 years. Al claimed he couldn't remember when he wasn't "cowboying". He started out working summers under the foreman CW Smith, riding the island's steep country with the other cowboys and learning the business from his father N. R. Vail and his uncle Ed Vail. Al and "Uncle Ed" traveled the intermountain west buying cattle to stock the island from such renowed ranches as the YP and the TS. He was married for 43 years to writer, Catherine "Kay" Sutherland of San Francisco. Al Vail was known for his modesty and old-fashioned integrity. His handshake was truly his word. A quiet perfectionist, Al always put the well-being of the animals and the land before his own. He rode the longest circles, weathered storms and droughts in high spirits, and always kept a positive attitude. Al loved his island-born horses, airplanes, good books, football, basketball, and boats, especially the Vaquero II. He was a member of the Los Alamos Society and the California Cattlemen's Association. He is survived by his wife, Kay, his two daughters Nita Catherine Vail of Sacramento, and Mary Louise Vail of Moorpark, his twin brother Russell Vail, and sister Margaret Vail Woolley, and their families of Pasadena. Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, 6 Harbor Way, #177, Santa Barbara, California 93109. The family's celebration of his life will be held Sunday. NICHOLAS, Oscar Friends and family will gather on Sunday, January 9 on the grass overlooking the ocean at San Clemente at Cliff Drive to bid farewell to longtime Santa Barbara couple Oscar and Cecilia Nicholas. This view was at their doorstep and they loved it almost as much as they loved each other. Burns and Allen, soup and sandwich, peanut butter and jelly, Oscar and Cecil none of the above sounds right without the other. Both came to Santa Barbara as children attended school and made their lives here. Their accomplishments were not of great heights. Their lives held Santa Barbara in their hearts. Cecilia made friends while working at Oakleys frame shop and golfing. Some of the areas famous artists were her friend and made special pictures just for her. She made it always a point to have soft drinks , cookies, snickers and dog bones for any friend to visit. She battled cancer for the last 20 years making a walker a must but battled life to be around to care for her husband. Surgery in June turned to an infection taking her life at Cottage Hospital. Take care of your Uncle whispered out of her mouth, the battle was over. Cecil passed away at the age of 85. Life could never be the same for Oscar Nicholas. He used to describe Cecil as a beautiful babe and she was. The glisten was still in his eyes as he spoke of her in his dreams. At the age of 87 the first time in his life he was alone. Well taught a poet and scholar, Oscar made his living as a tree specialist. He knew every tree in Santa Barbara. His scrapbooks contained the Dupont Estate, Fess Parkers home trees on Parkway's and Orchards in surrounding cities. Elks pool champion and many a hole in one, Jack of all trades but master of nothing was his saying. His wit and charm kept many a friend. He recently told his niece he felt ignorant and was embarrassed to ask what in the heck a dot com was. She explained it was a computer address. With a twinkle in his eye and a slow smile his answer was I thought so but I was afraid to ask anybody. Last year the couple celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary. Their niece Diana rented a limo and took the couple for hours around the city they loved so much. This sight that had been so normal all of their lives had not been seen in awhile. These last few years with Cecil refusing to move to the LA area to be closer to family, the couple grew dependent on friends and nieghbors for rides, meals and companionship. These relationships gave them their last wishes. To never leave their home. Phone calls, postcards and visits kept them independent. When asked to move with his niece Oscar replied, no I have good people here, people who like to tell me what to do. What would they do without me? Besides Johnny the barber needs my money. He's cut my hair for 30 years and I can't skip out on him now. Oscar Nicholas passed away in his home. Farewell to a grand couple. Anyone wishing to pay respects may visit Sunday, January 9th on the grass at San Clemente and Cliff Drive. A short gathering will be at 11:00 am. HERRERA, Lauren Ashley Our dear Lauren Ashley Herrera passed away at the age of 14 on January 3, 2000, at St Joseph Hospital in Eureka, California, due to complications of pneumonia. She was surrounded by her entire loving family. She was born on December 3, 1985 in Santa Barbara, California to Martin and Debra Herrera, and was little sister to her brother Lucas. Lauren attended Saint Raphael's Elementary School from kindergarten and was to graduate this year with her 8th grade class. She was a beloved friend and classmate to many. Lauren was a bright and eager student and was involved in many special school projects, most recently her Christmas play. Lauren was a leader and an instigator of fun among her friends. She enjoyed singing, soccer, shopping, and was a major fan of the Back Street Boys, and loved attending a recent concert of theirs. She loved to express herself through writing, and shared many poems and stories with us. Her dad lovingly called her "Doll", and she enjoyed other nicknames of "Princess", "Dolly" and "Dolly-Face". Lauren was a beloved cousin to Joseph, Matthew, Marc, Danielle and Darren. She spent many summers and much of her spare time with her younger cousins in the Santa Barbara area, and had a special gift of patience and love, which she shared with the children. She had a talent for "teaching" the children, whether it was chores, or the lessons of God's love. He attended Santa Monica and later Palisades High Schools, then continued at Santa Monica City College and San Francisco State, studying photography and graduating in Anthropology. There were four passions that wove like strong cords through his life: surfing, photography, books, and his late wife, Linda Linnick Kiewit. John's ballet grace on his surfboard was legend from Malibu to the Ranch, and his photographs of surfing were published in all major or (and most minor) surfing periodicals and journals. John's eye was also attracted inland, and on numerous journeys in his VW bug, sometimes with Linda, sometimes alone, he captured on film the West's natural and abandoned landscapes. "At road's end, the decay of man's dreams and the simple elegance of the natural scene have been (my) premiere attractions." he wrote in his own book, Gone To Sanctuary, a collection of his photographs published in large format in 1997. The greatest passion of his life, however, was Linda, who died of cancer one year ago. They were childhood sweethearts, and their love was life-long. John was the first boy Linda kissed, when she was eight, Linda was the first girl John kissed and he was eleven. when he was eleven. Before she passed-away, she asked John to scatter her ashes in the Yosemite backcountry, a landscape they both loved, but John never recovered the strength to do that.
