Lonnie Johnston, 84
FALLBROOK - Lonnie Thomas Johnston, 84, died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, in Fallbrook.
Born Jan. 8, 1916, in Story, Ark., he lived in Fallbrook for 50 years. He was a carpenter for the civil service at Camp Pendleton for 22 years and as a building inspector before retiring in 1973. He enjoyed fishing, garage sales and restoring antique furniture.
Mr. Johnston was preceded in death by his wife, Lura M. Johnston, on July 2, 1999. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Darrel T. and Jean Johnston of Pleasanton, Donnie L. Johnston of Long Beach and Nancy Johnston; brothers and sisters-in-law Ben D. and Opal Johnston and Betty Johnston, all of Texarkana, Ark., James B. and Murline Johnston of Fort Worth, Texas, and Millard C. and Kay Johnston of Clarksville, Texas; sisters Louise Whitley of Texarkana and Beulah Moore of Visalia; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2, at Berry-Bell & Hall Fallbrook Chapel. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, at the mortuary. Burial will follow at 11 a.m. at Fallbrook Masonic Cemetery.

William Wobig, 83
OCEANSIDE - William H. Wobig, 83, died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, of bladder cancer.
Born Nov. 9, 1916, he lived in Oceanside.
Mr. Wobig is survived by his sons and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Denise Wobig of Geneva, N.Y., and Gary Wobig and friend Cathy of Midvale, Utah; and daughter and son-in-law Diane and Richard Burgos of El Cerrito.
The family suggests memorial donations to a charity of choice.

Ronald Spicher, 71
OCEANSIDE - Ronald A. Spicher, 71, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, of congestive heart failure, at Tri-City Hospital.
Born March 10, 1929, in Los Angeles, he lived in Oceanside for 29 years. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton as a digital computer technician in communications and in the U.S. Army for several years before retiring Jan. 3, 1997.
Mr. Spicher is survived by his wife of 47 years, Bettie L. Spicher of Oceanside; mother and father Martha Phipps and Elmer M. Spicher of Alhambra; sons and daughter-in-law Richard W. Burton of Oceanside and Scott T. and Nance Spicher of Vancouver, Wash.; daughter and son-in-law Rhonda A. and Chuck Walker of Carlsbad; brother Wes Spicher of Lancaster; grandchildren Jamie Marie Walker, Megan Lee Anna Walker, Nicole Amber Walker, all of Carlsbad, Kimberly Ann Spicher, Christopher Michael Spicher and Ryan Tracy Spicher, all of Vancouver; and nephew Chris Spicher of Lancaster.
A graveside service will be held at noon Tuesday, Oct. 3, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park. Burial will follow in the Garden of Protection.

Jack Cain, 72

OCEANSIDE - Jack Roland Cain, 72, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, of a heart attack, in Oceanside.
Born Aug. 8, 1928, in Westminster, he lived in Oceanside for 10 years. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and was a truck driver and a firefighter for the Forestry Service. He was a bartender at Carl's Tavern and retired from custodial work for the Presbyterian Church in Westminster. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Mr. Cain is survived by his companion of 10 years, Cathy Hill of Oceanside; and sister Jeanette Finnerty of Westminster.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15, at the VFW hall in Vista. A private cremation is planned with burial at sea.

Robert Wilson, 87
OCEANSIDE - Robert Carr Wilson Sr., 87, died Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2000, in Oceanside.
Born Oct. 23, 1912, in New York, he lived in Oceanside. He worked for Montgomery Ward and was a member of St. Michael's by the Sea Catholic Church in Carlsbad.
Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by his mother and father, two brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Wilson of Oceanside; sons and daughters-in-law Robert Jr. and Linda Wilson of Oceanside and Donald D. and Annie Wilson of New Jersey; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held Monday, Oct. 9, at Eternal Hills Mortuary. A graveside service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park. Burial will follow.
The family suggests memorial donations to a charity of choice.

Rosario Cruz, 78
FALLBROOK - Rosario Flores Cruz, 78, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, in Fallbrook.
Born Jan. 7, 1922, in Jamay, Jalisco, Mexico, she lived in Fallbrook for 28 years. She was a homemaker for 54 years and a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Fallbrook.
Mrs. Cruz was preceded in death by her husband, Emiliano Cruz, in 1993. She is survived by her daughters, Margarita Avila, Teresa Cruz, Emilia Magana, Rosario Cruz, Lupe Rivera and Elena Dominguez, all of Fallbrook; brother Antonio Flores of El Centro; and 10 grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., with a vigil held and a rosary recited at 7 p.m. today, Oct. 10, at Berry-Bell & Hall Fallbrook Mortuary. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Fallbrook, with the Rev. Bud Kaicher officiating. Burial will follow at Fallbrook Masonic Cemetery.

Gary Brown, 59
AVALON - Gary G. Brown, 59, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, of cancer, in Oceanside.
Born Jan. 31, 1941, in New Mexico, he lived in Avalon for 30 years. He was the owner of Brown's Bikes.
Mr. Brown is survived by his companion, Mesa Bradley of Avalon; mother Norma Brown of Lodi; daughter and son-in-law Jenny and Bret Davis of Portland, Ore.; brother and sister-in-law Don and Patti Brown of Grants Pass, Ore.; sister and brother-in-law Marion and Herb Horstmann of Lodi; and grandchildren Luke and Brady Davis.
A memorial service will be held at 10 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15, at Descanso Beach in Avalon. A private cremation is planned with cremains to be scattered at sea.
The family suggests memorial donations to Avalon Kid Baseball, PO Box 707, Avalon, CA 90704.

Seymour Adelman, 85

OCEANSIDE - Seymour D. Adelman, 85, died Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2000, in Oceanside.
Born Sept. 29, 1915, in Peoria, Ill., he lived in Oceanside. He was the manager of a storage facility and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was awarded the Cross of War with Silver Star.
Mr. Adelman is survived by his long-time companion, Ida Balaban of Oceanside.
A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, at Riverside National Cemetery. Burial will follow.

Ashley Anderson, 10
ESCONDIDO - Ashley Jane Anderson, 10, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, at Palomar Medical Center.
Born Dec. 27, 1989, in San Diego, she lived in Escondido for 10 years and was a fifth generation Californian.
She was a fifth grader in the G.A.T.E. program and participated in the community garden at North Broadway Elementary School and was a member of Girl Scouts. She also took karate.
Ashley is survived by her mother and father, Jan and Bob Anderson of Hidden Meadows; brother Wesley Anderson of Escondido; half-sister Megan Dryer; grandparents Bob and Nola Ezell of Los Alamitos, Mel Anderson of Rancho Santa Fe and Mary Anderson of Mt. Waterman; and many aunts and uncles, cousins and friends.
Viewing will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. today, Oct. 10, at McLeod Mortuary Chapel. A graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. at Oak Hill Memorial Park, with interment to take place at 3 p.m.

Doris Devereaux, 87
ESCONDIDO - Doris Goodwin Devereaux, 87, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, in Escondido.
Born Jan. 8, 1913, in Belmont, Mass., she lived in Escondido for 47 years.
She was a public health nurse for San Diego County and a volunteer with the Special Olympics.
Mrs. Devereaux was preceded in death by her husband, James M. Devereaux, in 1951. She is survived by her sons, Peter Devereaux of Escondido and James Devereaux of Anderson; daughter Nina McCullough of Escondido; and granddaughter Alyssa Garrett of Bedford, Texas.
A private service was held.
The family suggests memorial donations to the Special Olympics, North San Diego County, 667 E. Vista Way, Vista, CA 92084.

William Genson, 85
SAN MARCOS - William Joseph Genson, 85, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000, at a local convalescent center.
Born Jan. 17, 1915, in Boston, he lived in San Marcos for 17 years.
He was a plumber for 47 years, retiring from Tretheway Bros. in Roslindale, Mass.
Mr. Genson is survived by his wife of 22 years, Carolyn M. Genson of San Marcos; sons William Genson of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Steven Avellino of North Easton, Mass.; daughter Kay L. Watson of Alpine; sisters Dorothy Pugsley of Halifax, Mass., and Alice Durmer of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at Rancho Vallecitos Mobile Estates Clubhouse in San Marcos, with the Rev. Marylou Sargent of First Church of Religious Science in Vista officiating. A private cremation is planned.
The family suggests memorial donations to the Alzheimer's Association, 8514 Commerce Ave., San Diego, CA 92121; or George G. Glenner Alzheimer's Family Centers Inc., 3686 Fourth Ave., San Diego, CA 92103-4016, designated for the Escondido facility.

Norma Sarratt, 64

FALLBROOK - Norma Jean Sarratt, 64, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2000, in Fallbrook.
Born April 22, 1936, in Lundy, N.C., she lived in Fallbrook for 22 years. She was a salesperson for Avon cosmetics for eight years and a member of Old Girls Card Club in Fallbrook.
Mrs. Sarratt was preceded in death by her husband, Eddie Lee Sarratt, in 1985. She is survived by her son, Jody Sarratt of Fallbrook; daughters Jeannie R. Greene and Cherie Davison, both of Fallbrook; brothers Ray Thomas of South Carolina, Lee Thomas of North Carolina and Alfred Thomas of Redlands; sisters Nina Bjork of Placentia and Mildred Westerman of Grants Pass, Ore.; and seven grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. today, Oct. 10, at Berry-Bell & Hall Fallbrook Mortuary. Burial will follow at Fallbrook Masonic Cemetery.

James Courtney, 52

OCEANSIDE - James P. Courtney, 52, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, of lymphoma, at his home.
Born July 5, 1948, in Philadelphia, he lived in Oceanside for 22 years. He worked for Caltrans and served in the U.S. Army Reserves before retiring in October 1997 as a lieutenant colonel.
He was a member of Mission San Luis Rey Catholic Church and former president of Villanova Alumni San Diego Chapter. He was a religious education teacher at Mission San Luis Rey, a CBC Auctioneer and a member of Friendly Sons of St. Patrick and the Rancho del Oro volunteer committee.
Mr. Courtney was preceded in death by his brother, John Courtney, in 1969; and his mother and father Eleanor A. and John J. Courtney. He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Katie M. Courtney of Oceanside; son Kevin Courtney of Oceanside; daughter Colleen Courtney of Oceanside; brother and sister-in-law Paul and Judy Courtney of Atlanta; sisters and brothers-in-law Mary and Joe Oriolo of Schrewburg, N.J., Barbara and Enrique Devoto of Red Bank, N.J., and Katie and Alex Conroy of Westchester, Pa.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, at Mission San Luis Rey Serra Center. Interment will follow at 6 p.m. at Mission San Luis Rey Cemetery.

Elaine Wilson-Spears, 63

OCEANSIDE - Elaine P. Wilson-Spears, 63, died in Oceanside.
Born Oct. 26, 1936, in Pontotoc, Miss., she lived in Oceanside for 31 years.
She was a unit Secretary at Tri-City Medical Center and a member of the Second Missionary Baptist Church of Oceanside.
Mrs. Wilson-Spears was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Wilson, in 1993; brothers Oscar Pinson, Ervin Pinson and Tom Pinson; and sister Alma Pinson. She is survived by her sons Terry M. Spears of Laguna Niguel, Elton L. Spears of Fontana, Freddie L. Spears of Oceanside and Ernest A. Pinson of Memphis, Tenn.; daughters Jacqueline E. Spears and Robbie C. Spears, both of Vista, Shirley E. Quiles of Florida and Leverette V. Spears of Oceanside; sisters Ida Mae Rayford of Memphis, Annie B. Farr and Leona Gordon, both of Pontotoc, and Josephine Stokes of Lamberts, Miss.; 15 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, at Eternal Hills Mortuary. A funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, at Second Missionary Baptist Church of Oceanside. Burial will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Eva Bals, 93

ESCONDIDO - Eva Isabel Bals, 93, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, at Palomar Medical Center.
Born Sept. 29, 1907, in Webster, S.D., she lived in Escondido for 47 years. She was a teacher and homemaker.
Mrs. Bals was preceded in death by her husband, Ted Bals, in 1994.
She is survived by her stepgrandchildren Pam Paxton and husband Larry and Welda Clemens and husband Don, all of Escondido, Pat Garvin and husband Don of Ramona and Larry Johnson and wife Patsy of Oceanside; sister Helen Eastman of Arizona; nephew the Rev. Tom Selletin of Nebraska; and many great and great-great-stepgrandchildren.
Visitation and viewing was held and a rosary recited Monday, Oct. 9, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary Chapel, with the Rev. Tom Selletin officiating.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today, Oct. 10, at St. Timothy's Catholic Church, with the Rev. James Rafferty officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Zella Wieg, 85
FALLBROOK - Zella Evelyn Wieg, 85, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000, in Fallbrook.
Born Jan. 14, 1915, in Spokane, Wash., she lived in Fallbrook for 18 years.
Mrs. Wieg is survived by her daughter, Shirley McLin of Fallbrook; sister Valda Mae Wiegand of Lynwood, Wash.; grandchildren Darren Jennings, Lynnette Gomez, both of Fallbrook, and Jennifer Apperson of Rockhill, S.C.; and great-grandchildren Andrea, Jaqueline and Antonio Gomez, all of Fallbrook.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, at Zion Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Mark Demel officiating. A private cremation is planned.
The family suggests memorial donations to the American Diabetes Association, 225 Broadway, Suite 1120, San Diego, CA 92101.
