OCEANSIDE - Helen M. Smith, 75, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, in Oceanside.
Born Aug. 22, 1925, in Minneapolis, she lived in Oceanside for eight years.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Gail Turner Smith, in November 1987. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Robin Smith and Nancy Floyd of Georgia; daughters Cory Mac a'Ghobhainn of San Francisco and Jaina Kennedy of Dana Point; brother and sister-in-law Leonard Jr. and Margaret Still of Minneapolis; grandchild Dallas Kennedy; and great-grandchild Payton L. Kennedy-Wexler.
A memorial service will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at Eternal Hills Mortuary. A private cremation is planned.

ESCONDIDO - Paul Crew Waite, 96, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at his home.
Born Nov. 26, 1904, in Long Beach, he lived in Encinitas and Leucadia from 1926 to 1957 before moving to Escondido.
Mr. Waite is survived by his wife of 70 years, Lucille Lacey Waite of Escondido; son and daughter-in-law Curtis and Barbara Waite of Antigua, West Indies; daughters and sons-in-law Janis and Melvin Bittner of Escondido and Diane and Wesley Unfried of Greer, S.C.; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Jan. 18, at San Marcos Cemetery, with the Rev. Melvin Bittner and David Earnhart and her son, Curtis Waite, officiating.

Robert Hayes, 81
RAMONA - Robert "Bob" Hayes, 81, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at his home.
Born Oct. 6, 1919, in Sheridan, Ark., he lived in Ramona for 41 years. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1957, when he was discharged as a chief radioman. He served as an electronics technician for the FBI for 18 years and was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, serving as Eucharistic minister. He was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus and enjoyed woodcarving.
Mr. Hayes is survived by his wife of almost 55 years, Betty J. Hayes of Ramona; sons Patrick Hayes of Redondo Beach, Matthew Hayes of Ramona and Talbot Hayes of Campo; daughters Frances Nystrom of Point Loma, Margaret Hayes of Ramona and Elizabeth George of San Francisco; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held and a rosary recited at noon today, Jan. 18, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. A Mass will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. at the church, with the Rev. Mike Sinor officiating. Burial will follow at Nuevo Memory Gardens in Ramona, with military honors.

Mrs. Goodwin was preceded in death by her husband, Lowell Keith Goodwin, in 1994; and her son, Lowell Keith Goodwin Jr., in 1995. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Janice and Tom Beals of Vista and Shirley and John Keegan of Box Elder, S.D.; brothers and sister-in-law Kenneth and Lorraine Day of Yucca Valley and William Day of Bend, Ore.; sister Mary Erwin of Camp Verde, Ariz.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

ESCONDIDO - David Roger Owen, 53, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at his home.
Born March 11, 1947, in Fort Collins, Colo., he lived in Escondido for 26 years. He was a marketing and public relations director for Palomar-Pomerado Health System for four years and was executive director of the San Diego County Farm Bureau for five years. He was a reporter and news anchor at KNSD-TV Channel 39 in San Diego for 16 years and served as 2nd lieutenant in the National Guard.
Mr. Owen was preceded in death by his wife, Cyndy Lynn Owen, on Dec. 23, 2000. He is survived by his father, Thomas E. Owen Jr. of Raton, N.M.; son Mike Owen of Escondido; brother Robert D. Owen of Huntington Beach; half-brother Timothy Owen of Denver; and sister Linda E. Shu of Berkeley.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at San Pasqual High School Performing Arts Center in Escondido, with Dennis Keating and Dr. David Ferreira officiating. A private cremation with interment is planned.

Born Aug. 10, 1933, in Charlotte, N.C., he previously lived in Oceanside. He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps as a staff sergeant.
Mr. Williams is survived by his wife, Thelma Williams of Las Vegas; sons Dennis Williams, Terry Williams, Willie Williams Jr., and Eddie Williams, all of Oceanside; daughters Velma Williams, Benita Williams and Paulette Williams, all of Oceanside; 19 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

OCEANSIDE - Wallis Carroll Schallock, 90, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, in Vista.
Born Oct. 15, 1910, in Big Timber, Mont., he lived in Oceanside for eight years and had lived in San Diego County for 22 years. He was an electrical inspector for the city and county of Santa Barbara before retiring and was past master of Doric Masonic Lodge No. 53 in Big Timber.
Mr. Schallock was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Schallock, in 1997. He is survived by his son, Larry Schallock of Oceanside; daughter Eleanor Kay Prestidge of El Cajon; sister Irene Kuhlman of Oceanside; grandchildren Lisa Rios and Henry Campo; and great-grandchildren Henry Jr. and Danny Rios.

ESCONDIDO - Grace Margaret Grout, 90, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, in Escondido.
Born Sept. 20, 1910, in Rivesville, W.Va., she lived in Escondido for 29 years. She was a bookkeeper for Seaboard Finance for 23 years and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Escondido.
Mrs. Grout was preceded in death by five sister and four brothers. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Russell T. Grout of Escondido; sister Josephine Cottrill of Clarksburg, W.Va.; seven nieces; and 10 nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21, at the First United Methodist church in Escondido, with the Revs. Ralph Johnson and Faith Conklin officiating. Interment will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 22, at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Mrs. Scheel was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Kiernan, in 1965. She is survived by her daughter, Dee Lamon of Carlsbad; sister and brother-in-law Geraldine and Troy Cato of Covina; grandchildren Joni and Michael Gray of Fallbrook; great-grandchildren Cory, Dakota and Logan; nieces Georgia Carol Caloudes and Jeannine Walters; nephew Terry Hollinc; and grand nephew Nicholas Deville.

SUN CITY - Geralda Lucille Arasim, 82, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at Ember Care in Perris.
Born March 10, 1918, in Rhode Island, she lived in Sun City for 20 years. She was a self-employed tour organizer at The Farm in Wildomar for 10 years. She was a member of St. Francis of Rome Catholic Church in Wildomar, serving in the Altar Society, a volunteer cook for the poor at Fishes and Loaves and worked for St. Vincent de Paul Society in Wildomar. She enjoyed making ceramic gifts and was a member of the Ceramic Club at The Farm.
Mrs. Arasim is survived by her son, Edward Arasim of Menifee; daughter Maureen Herran of San Jose; sister Francis Boudreau of Fall River, Mass.; brother Jerry Lopriore of Fall River; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

SUN CITY - Robert Laurent Boivin, 66, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Loma Linda University Medical Center.
Born Nov. 26, 1934, in Montreal, Canada, he lived in Sun City for 10 years. He was a warehouseman for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in Los Angeles for 26 years. He enjoyed playing hockey and ice skating, woodworking, painting and camping with his family. He worked for the Sun City Senior Center for many years.
