Norma Fredricka Sprotte, 80
FALLBROOK - Norma Fredricka Sprotte, 80, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at Las Villas De Carlsbad Nursing Home.
Born April 24, 1920, in the Philippine Islands, she lived in Fallbrook for 20 years. She was a teacher for the South Pasadena Unified School District for 10 years and a member of the Angel Society of Fallbrook.
Mrs. Sprotte was preceded in death by her husband, Edward C. Sprotte, in 1998. She is survived by her son, William Sprotte of Chico; daughters Patricia Sprotte of Fallbrook, Maggie Jenkins of Encinitas and Jan Whittington of San Diego; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service by the family is pending. A private cremation is planned.

ESCONDIDO - Louise Violet Engleman, 89, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at her home.
Born Nov. 1, 1911, in Rosedale, Kan., she lived in San Diego County for 21 years. She was a salesperson for Mitchell's Gift Shop in Anaheim for three years.
Mrs. Engleman is survived by her son, Donald R. Merrick of San Marcos; and daughter Donna L. Engleman of Escondido.
A memorial Mass will be held at noon Saturday, Dec. 16, at St. Mark's Catholic Church in San Marcos, with the Rev. Burt Boudoin officiating. A private inurnment will take place at Holy Sepulcher cemetery in Orange.

LOS OSOS - Calvin C. Gabriel, 87, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at French Hospital in San Luis Obispo.
Born June 4, 1913, in Nowata, Okla., he lived in Los Osos since 1981. He graduated summa cum laude from Oklahoma State University in 1935, taught for Blackwell schools in Oklahoma for two years and worked for the Civil Aeronautics Authority. He was the business manager for the Oceanside-Carlsbad Union High School and College District for 35 years and a volunteer for Cuesta College and for Trinity United Methodist Church, where he served in the choir. He was a 57-year member of Rotary International in Oceanside and Morro Bay and a member of the Cuesta Wind Ensemble.
Mr. Gabriel is survived by his wife, Ruth Gabriel; daughters and sons-in-law Nancy and Gary Dumford of San Clemente and Barbara and David George of Los Osos; sons and daughters-in-law Cal Gabriel Jr. and Judy Schramm of Encinitas and Bob and Sissy Gabriel of Lake Oswego, Ore.; sister WilmaJeane Gabriel of Nowata; grandchildren Ralph and Cathy Kilgour of Victorville, Terri and Kirk Sidener of Morro Bay, Stuart and Lisa Kilgour of Huntington Beach, Michele Gabriel of San Francisco and Chris Gabriel of Alamosa, Colo.; and great-grandchildren Ruthie, Abbie, Julie, Billy and Tiffany Kilgour.

RANCHO BERNARDO - Raena Kendall Linder, 89, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at Palomar Medical Center.
Born May 17, 1911, in Chicago, she lived in Rancho Bernardo for 25 years. She was a homemaker and a member of the Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church. She graduated from the University of Illinois in 1933 and was a transportation provider for the Legally Blind Social Club of Escondido.
Mrs. Linder was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Linder, in 1974; and her daughters, Phylis Linder, in 1954, and Betty Ann Linder, in 1951. She is survived by her stepdaughters, Marcia Muller of Beavercreek, Ohio, and Kay McCoy of W. Chester, Pa.; daughter and son-in-law Naomi and Robert Martin of Valhalla, N.Y.; and sister Barbara Wainscott of Greensboro, N.C.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, at Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church, with Bruce Humphrey officiating. A private cremation is planned.

Edmond Kwan, 58
CLAIREMONT - Edmond K. Kwan, 58, died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at his home.
He was a business professor at Cal State San Marcos since 1990, serving on more than 30 committees, and worked at Cal State Long Beach, National University of Singapore, the University of Singapore and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He earned a bachelor's degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and his master's in business administration from the University of California, Berkeley. He received his Ph.D. in international finance from Cornell University in 1971.
Mr. Kwan is survived by his wife, Marion Kwan; son Calvin Kwan; and daughter Sharon Kwan.
Ruth Hefner, 96
DEL MAR - Ruth Hefner, 96, died Saturday, Dec. 10, 2000, at Palomar Medical Center.
Born March 24, 1904, in Holcomb, Mo., she lived in Del Mar. She was a house parent for Bell Fountain Boys Home.
Mrs. Hefner was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Hefner, in 1982. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John and Diane Hefner of St. Charles, Minn.; daughter Carole Renner of Del Mar; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Anna Jean Christiansen
Anna Jean Christiansen was born June 6, 1925, in San Diego, the daughter of Anna and Eugene Cox. She died Friday, Dec, 8, 2000, in her home. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Ralph Christiansen. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ralph "Buzz" and Barbara Christiansen; daughter Judy Christiansen; granddaughters Stacy Brown, Tracy Daughterty, Vonni Sweat; grandson Robert Merten; and nine great-grandchildren.
Anna and her husband owned and operated a carnival for Christiansen Amusements for more than 25 years. She moved to Escondido in 1992. Vowing not to become idle in retirement, she put her vast knowledge and talent as a seamstress and crafter to work. She devoted many years of her life to crafting for World Outreach, an organization that sponsors mission projects with its profits. A week before Anna died, she was selling items she had made from her bedside. She was a loved mother, grandmother, grandma-great and friend. She will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, at Greenwood Mortuary and Memorial Park in San Diego. A private family graveside service will immediately follow.
William Spiegel, 60
ENCINITAS - William H. Spiegel, 60, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, in Encinitas.
Born Jan. 31, 1940, in Michigan, he lived in Encinitas for 30 years.
Mr. Spiegel is survived by his wife of 34 years, Diane Spiegel; son Walter Spiegel of San Marcos; daughter Paige Spiegel of Playa del Rey; and sister Marcia Atchison of Tucson, Ariz.

Mrs. Chan was preceded in death by her husband, James Chan, on March 8, 1979. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Michael and Irene Chan of Oxton; daughter and son-in-law Jan Chung and Dr. Oscar Chung of Carlsbad; and grandchildren Dr. Stephen Chan, Ruth Chan Jonathan Chung and Jason Chung.

SANTA BARBARA - Richard H. Redding, 72, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara.
Born Aug. 23, 1928, in Fruita, Colo., he lived in Santa Barbara and had lived in Escondido for many years. He graduated from Mark Keppel High School, Pasadena City College and California College of Optometry. He served in the U.S. Army Occupation Forces in Japan following World War II and practiced optometry in Escondido for 42 years. He was a member of Escondido Jaycees and Kiwanis clubs, served on the board of the Escondido Boys Club. He was a member of the Elementary School Board, president of the San Diego Optometric Association and served on the first board of California Vision Services. He received an honorary service award from the PTA, having been president at Lincoln School.
Dr. Redding was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Jo and Dorothy. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Joann Theaker of Rosemead; daughter and son-in-law Janet and Stephen Carlson of Carpinteria; sons and daughters-in-law Matthew Redding of Seattle, Andrew and Stasi Redding and Christopher and Ronda Redding, all of Escondido; sister and brother-in-law Charlotte and Bob of Apple Valley; and grandchildren Emily and Carolyn Carlson of Carpinteria and Eric, Kyle and Ben, all of Escondido.
