Mildred Brown, 81
SAN MARCOS - Mildred Phyllis Brown, 81, died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at her home.
Born Jan. 21, 1919, in Indian Harbor, Ind., she lived in San Diego County for 20 years. She was a registered nurse for 60 years, retiring from Scripps Green Hospital in La Jolla. She served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a nurse during World War II, achieving the rank of 1st lieutenant, and was a member of St. Mark's Catholic Church in San Marcos.
Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her son, Richard Day, in 1972; and her husband of 22 years, Wallace W. Brown, in 1998. She is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Joyce and Charles Holman of Escondido and Denise Day of San Marcos; brother and sister-in-law Joseph and Pat Gullo of Chicago; sisters and brother-in-law Mary T. and Orland Redo of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and Josephine Scurlock of Naperville, Ill.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation and viewing will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, at Allen Bros. Mortuary, San Marcos Chapel. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 15, at St. Mark's Catholic Church in San Marcos, with the Rev. George Dunkley officiating. A graveside service with interment will follow at 2:15 p.m. at Riverside National Cemetery, Staging Area 2.

Wilfred Rockwood, 83
VISTA - Wilfred A. Rockwood, 83, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at his home.
Born Aug. 29, 1917, in Boston, he lived in Vista for 23 years. He was a mechanic and did maintenance for Mattel Inc. before retiring in 1977. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of Palomar Flyers Club.
Mr. Rockwood is survived by his wife of 61 years, Grace E. Rockwood of Vista; sons and daughters-in-law John A. and Patti Rockwood of Redondo Beach, Thomas and Kathy Rockwood of Escondido and William and Stacey Rockwood of Woodland Hills; daughter Donna J. Rockwood of Rancho Santa Margarita; brother Gerald Rockwood of Somerville, Mass.; sisters Lillian Garvey of Woburn, Mass., and Jeanette Hixenbaugh of Brewster, Mass.; grandchildren Colette Ulloa, Kevin Rockwood, Dean Rockwood and David Rockwood; and great-grandchildren Nicholas Rockwood, Trenton Rockwood and Maya Ulloa.
A private family cremation and service are planned. Her cremains will be scattered.

ESCONDIDO - Thomas B. Villa, 33, died in Arizona. Born March 7, 1967, in Oceanside, he lived in Escondido all of his life.
Mr. Villa is survived by his mother, Ruth Villa of Escondido; daughters Jasseia Villa and Reyna Villa, both of Escondido; brothers Danny Villa, Eddie Villa and Freddy Villa, all of Escondido, and Henry Villa of Oceanside; sisters Inez Bryson of Poway and Viola Villa of Escondido; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, at Church of the Resurrection in Escondido. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Born Jan. 31, 1940, in Michigan, he lived in Encinitas for 30 years.
Mr. Spiegel is survived by his wife of 34 years, Diane Spiegel; son Walter Spiegel of San Marcos; daughter Paige Spiegel of Playo del Rey; and sister Marcia Atchison of Tucson, Ariz.

RANCHO PENASQUITOS - William V. Dawson, 72, died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, of heart failure, at his home.
Born Jan. 18, 1928, in Pasadena, he lived in Rancho Penasquitos for 16 years. He was executive director of Crash Inc. for many years and served in the U.S. Army, 82nd Airborne. He graduated from San Dieguito High School in 1945 and served as ASB president. He was the former president of the Encinitas Little League.
Mr. Dawson was preceded in death by his mother, Soledad Dawson; and father Donald Dawson. He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Suzanne Dolby-Dawson of Rancho Penasquitos; sons Michael Dawson of Fallbrook and Patrick Dawson of Minnesota; daughter and son-in-law Lisa and Mark Poe of Big Sur; brothers and sister-in-law Charles and Shirley Dawson of Escondido, Howard Dawson of La Verne and Louis Dawson of Los Angeles; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, at Greenwood Mortuary, Garden Chapel, in San Diego. A private inurnment is planned.

FALLBROOK - Janet Louise Thomas, 38, died Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, at her home.
Born March 11, 1962, in Richmond, she lived in Fallbrook for 34 years. She was registrar for San Diego County Office of Education. She graduated from Fallbrook High School and Sam Houston University, with a degree in criminal justice and social welfare. She was North County Employee of the Year in 1998.
Ms. Thomas is survived by her mother and father, Joyce Pauli and Dr. Robert P. Thomas of Fallbrook; brother Robert P. Thomas Jr. of Fallbrook; and sister Rhonda Brinkley of Fallbrook.

ESCONDIDO - Baudelia A. Cruz, 80, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, of Alzheimer's disease.
Born June 18, 1920, in Mexico, she lived in Escondido for more than 50 years.
Mrs. Cruz is survived by her husband of 45 years, Job B. Cruz of Escondido; sons Edward Rodriguez of Michigan and Joseph B. Cruz and his life-partner, Jason Moore, of Escondido.

Ray Castaneda, 88
VISTA - Ray Castaneda, 88, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at his home.
Born Jan. 6, 1912, in Zacatecas, Mexico, he lived in Vista for 76 years. He was a heavy equipment operator for the U.S. government for 35 years.
Mr. Castaneda was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Marguerite Castaneda, in 1993. He is survived by his son, Stephen Castaneda of Vista; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

ENCINITAS - Roy Tatsuo Sakauye, 77, died Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, in Vista.
Born March 6, 1923, in Gardena, he lived in Encinitas for 45 years. He was a gardener and a member of the North County Gardener Club. He enjoyed bowling, golfing and deep sea fishing. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars of Encinitas.
Mr. Sakauye was preceded in death by his brothers, Jack Sakauye and Tom Sakauye; father Tatsujiro Sakauye; mother Haru Tagchi; and sister Miwa Asari. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Alice Sakauye of Encinitas; and brother Ike Sakauye of Midway City.
A funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, at Eternal Hills Chapel, with the Rev. Harry Murakami officiating. Burial will take place at a later date.

Mrs. Ikezi is survived by her husband, Hiroyuki Ikezi of Rancho Santa Fe; son Chihiro Ikezi of San Jose; daughters Yuki Ikezi of Santa Clara and Eri Ikezi of New York City; brother Hajime Hori of Nagoya; and sister Yoshie Matsukawa of Nagoya.

Mrs. Oliver was preceded in death by her husband, Joel L. Oliver, on June 29, 1986; grandson Benjamin Oliver; and daughter-in-law Marlen Oliver. She is survived by her sons, Joel Oliver Jr. and Michael Oliver; daughters Judith Oliver, Joanne Phillippi, Laurie Lynch and Jeanne Mitchell; sisters Joyce Pollock and Grace Becker; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Born Feb. 27, 1923, in Ohio, she lived in Rancho Santa Fe for 20 years. She was a teacher before retiring in 1978.
Mrs. Schenz is survived by her husband of 51 years, Robert F. Schenz of Rancho Santa Fe; son and daughter-in-law R. Clark and Cynthia Schenz of Rancho Santa Fe; and daughter Jacquelyn Schenz of Carmel Valley.
