Donald Watkins, 87
CARLSBAD - Donald A. Watkins, 87, died Monday, Aug. 28, 2000, at Tri-City Hospital.
Born April 25, 1913, in Oakland, he lived in Carlsbad for the past 35 years. He worked for the California Highway Patrol for 28 years, retiring as assistant chief. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and left as a chief.
Mr. Watkins was preceded in death by his son, Joseph Watkins, in 1983. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Watkins; sons Donald Watkins and Dennis Watkins; daughter Maryann Watkins; sister Jeanne; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorial donations to the City of Hope, 1500 E. Duarte Road, Duarte, CA 91010.
Mary VanCamp, 80
MURRIETA - Mary Agnes VanCamp, 80, died Monday, Aug. 28, 2000, of cardiomyopathy at Beverly Health Care in Murrieta.
Born March 12, 1920, in Long Beach, she lived in Murrieta for 25 years. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. VanCamp is survived by her sons, Philip VanCamp of Murrieta and Richard VanCamp of La Habra; daughter Angela VanCamp of Tustin; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, at St. Martha's Catholic Church in Murrieta. Burial will follow at Riverside National Cemetery, Staging Area 3.

David Smelser, 76
MURRIETA - David Clarance Smelser, 76, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, of congestive heart failure, at Rancho Springs Medical Center in Murrieta.
Born June 20, 1924, in Santa Monica, he lived in Murrieta for 30 years. He worked as an insurance agent for Prudential Insurance for 20 years and enjoyed boating and fishing.
Mr. Smelser is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Smelser of Murrieta; daughters Andrea Homes of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Susan Olson of Cardiff by the Sea; and four grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1, at the family home.

Francis Diaz, 55
HEMET - Francis "Franny" Diaz, 55, died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, at Hemet Valley Medical Center.
Born Sept. 17, 1944, in Pala, he lived on the Soboba Indian Reservation for 33 years. He was a security guard for Candaleria Environmental in Anza for five years and had been a drug and alcohol counselor for the county of Riverside for 12 years. He was a former member of Union Local 1184 in Riverside and enjoyed family, deer hunting, gardening and working on his truck.
Mr. Diaz is survived by his wife of 33 years, Francie Salgado Diaz of Soboba; mother Lucille Mojado Diaz of Pala; sons David Diaz, Michael Diaz and Nakoma Diaz, all of Soboba; sisters Marjorie Norte, Carol Hutton, Patricia Agneta, Anita Rodriguez, Janice Yazzie and JoAnn Martin, all of Pala; brothers Arthur Diaz, Clifford Diaz and Howard Diaz, all of Pala; eight grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1, at McWane Family Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Leland Wesson officiating. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, at Pala Mission Church, with the Rev. Paul Marconi officiating. Burial will take place at the Pala Indian Reservation Cemetery.

ESCONDIDO - Fred Bowman, 78, died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, at Life Care Center of Escondido.
Born May 3, 1922, in Middlesboro, Ky., he lived in Escondido. He served in the U.S. Navy before retiring in 1962.
Mr. Bowman is survived by his wife of 42 years, Leatha Irene Bowman of Escondido; daughters Mildred Combs of Escondido and Dorothy Haney of Nashville, Tenn.; brothers Bob Bowman of Pensacola, Fla., and Lawrence Bowman of Baxter, Ky.; sisters Ruth Sumpter of Pensacola, Fla., Lois Carr of Orlando, Fla., and Elizabeth Herron of Kingsport, Tenn.; six grandchildren including granddaughter Donna Kleinsmith-Palmer of Escondido; 13 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30, at Oak Hill Memorial Park, with the Rev. Richard Huls officiating. Burial will follow.

CARLSBAD - Alexander Gilbert Shortt, 54, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at Scripps Encinitas Hospital.
Born Feb. 2, 1946, in Montreal, Canada, he lived in Carlsbad for seven years. He was a self-employed building contractor for 15 years.
Mr. Shortt is survived by his wife, Kevin Suzanne Shortt of Carlsbad; mother Pearl Shortt of Oceanside; sons Brian Shortt of Jamestown and Nicholas Shortt of Carlsbad; daughters Jennifer Shortt of Oceanside and Alexis Shortt of Carlsbad; brother Gary Shortt of Oceanside; and sister Maryatta Devlin of Prescott, Ontario.

OCEANSIDE - Elisaia P. Siluano, 62, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, of cancer, in Oceanside.
Born Aug. 9, 1938, in American Samoa, he lived in Oceanside for 41 years. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps before retiring as a master gunnery sergeant in 1985. He worked for the civil service and was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Vista.
Mr. Siluano was preceded in death by his mother and father, Milosia Nakiso Siluano and Pua'a Siluano; and brother Faamaile Amituanai'. Alice Humphrey, 80
ESCONDIDO - Alice Moore Humphrey, 80, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at her home.
Born May 21, 1920, in New York City, she lived in Escondido for 27 years. She was a homemaker for 50 years. She graduated from Tufts University with a bachelor of science and served as president on the board of the Villa Madeira Association in Escondido. She was a member of PEO, Chapter ES in Emporia, Kan. and of the First Presbyterian Church in Emporia. She enjoyed gardening, painting, swimming, traveling and her children and grandchildren.
Mrs. Humphrey was preceded in death by her first husband, Champ A. Graham, in 1967; and her daughter, Kerin Elizabeth Graham, in 1958. She is survived by her husband of 28 years, Grant Humphrey of Escondido; daughters Ann graham of Ewing, N.J., Margi Grimwood of Emporia, Nora Rodrigues of San Diego and Patty Williamson of Escondido; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, at Nativity Catholic Church in Rancho Santa Fe, with the Rev. Clark officiating. A private cremation is planned with interment to take place at a later date in Emporia, Kan.

Harold Barker, 88
FALLBROOK - Harold Wilsea "Hal" Barker, 88, died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, at Fallbrook Hospital.
Born June 5, 1912, in Long Island City, N.Y., he lived in Fallbrook for 44 years. He was a western film actor for more than 40 years. He served as a major in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II in Iwo Jima, receiving a Silver Star. He was top salesperson in Southern California during his 22 years of work for Security Title, Safeco Title and Chicago Title. He was manager of the Gird Ranch in Fallbrook for more than 20 years and was past president and lifetime member of Caballeros del Camino Real.
Mr. Barker is survived by his wife of 17 years, Bonita J. Barker of Fallbrook; stepson James Chaffin of Fallbrook; stepdaughter Debbie Ramsey of Fallbrook and Patricia Lockard of Tucson, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Fallbrook, with the Rev. Don Kroeger of St. John's Episcopal Church in Fallbrook officiating. Inurnment will take place at Fort Rosecrans National cemetery in Point Loma.

OCEANSIDE - Margaret E. Foussat, 82, died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, in Vista.
Born March 30, 1918, in Tucson, Ariz., she lived in Oceanside for 81 years. She worked for Triplettes Co. before retiring in 1970. She was a member of Mission San Luis Rey Catholic Church.
Mrs. Foussat was preceded in death by her daughter, Jeannie Anaya, in 1991. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Louis Foussat of Oceanside; son and daughter-in-law Robert and Vickie Foussat of South Carolina; brother Ernist Estarda of Cardiff by the Sea; sister Gertrude Estarda of Oceanside; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, at Eternal Hills Mortuary. A funeral service is scheduled for noon Friday, Dec. 8, at the mortuary. Interment will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

William Robinson, 86
SAN DIEGO - William Robinson, 86, died Friday, Nov. 17, 2000, of heart failure, at Villa Pomerado.
Born May 19, 1914, in Yorkshire, England, he lived in San Diego for 15 years. He was a horse trainer, training hackney show ponies in Scotland, Canada and the United States, before retiring in 1999.
Mr. Robinson was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Robinson, on Feb. 9, 1999. He is survived by his son, David Allen Robinson of Ontario, Canada.
A memorial service will be held at noon Monday, Dec. 4, at Scripps Miramar Ranch in San Diego, with Allan Baulsh, president of ASHA, officiating. A private cremation is planned, with cremains to be scattered.
