Pedro Balignasay, 73
OCEANSIDE - Pedro Pagtulingan Balignasay, 73, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, of a heart attack, at Tri-City Hospital.
Born July 22, 1927, in Badoc Illocos Norte, Philippines, he lived in Oceanside for 33 years. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, the Korean War and did three tours in Vietnam before retiring as a gunnery sergeant in 1973.
Mr. Balignasay was preceded in death by his brother, Teofilo P. Balignasay, in 1996. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Elidia P. Balignasay of Oceanside; sons and daughter-in-law Roy Balignasay, Peter Balignasay, Peter Balignasay, Edwin Balignasay, Robert Balignasay and Ricky and Rosinda Balignasay, all of Oceanside; daughters and sons-in-law Marissa and Greg Mendez, Susan and Frank DeAmicis and Belinda and Foti Burtzos, all of Oceanside; sisters and brothers-in-law Leonora and Alfredo Bala and Arcenia and Miguel Pascua, all of Waipahu, Hawaii; and grandchildren Greg, Gabriel, Julian and Juston Mendez, Keli, Chris and Matthew Balignasay, Alyssa, Alexandra, Andrew and Travor Burtzos and Franky DeAmicis.
Viewing will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., with a rosary recited at 7 p.m., today, Aug. 24, at Eternal Hills Mortuary. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at the mortuary. Burial will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Hilda Talle, 97
POWAY - Hilda J. Talle, 97, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, at Villa Pomerado in Poway.
Born Feb. 20, 1903, in Sedan, Minn., she lived in Poway for 10 years. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Talle was preceded in death by her husband, Otto Talle Sr., in 1975; two brothers; and two sisters. She is survived by her son, Otto Talle of San Diego; grandchildren Eric and Mark Talle of San Diego; and great-granddaughter Paige Talle.
A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 28, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles, with the Rev. Robert Richards officiating. Burial will follow.

Salvador Martinez, 66
TWENTYNINE PALMS - Salvador Martinez, 66, died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, at his home.
Born Aug. 1, 1934, in Susanville, he lived in Twentynine Palms for one week, having moved there from San Diego. He had lived in Oceanside from 1970 to 1982 and worked as a maintenance man for the state of California before retiring after 25 years. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1951 to 1954, receiving a Purple Heart, and was a member of the Elks Lodge in Pomona, the Better Breathers, the American Chess Federation of America, the National Rifle Association and the Claremont Church of God. He enjoyed country music, pool and archery and played the guitar.
Mr. Martinez is survived by his wife, Dolores Mae Martinez of Twentynine Palms; son David Christopher Martinez of Fernley, Nev.; daughters Veronica Joy Alford of Challenge, Melinda Gay Fur Furo of San Diego and Lisa Merry Villarreal of Carson City, Nev.; brother Ramon Martinez of Sacramento; sisters Josephine Gladback and Rose Holm, both of Sacramento; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today, Aug. 24, at Wiefels & Son Chapel in Twentynine Palms. A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 3, at Claremont Church of God in San Diego, with the Rev. Don Bergstrom officiating. A graveside service will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25, at Riverside National Cemetery, Staging Area 1, with the Rev. Dan Baele officiating.
The family suggests memorial donations to the Heart Beat Children's Crisis Center or the Young Life Christian Outreach for Teens Fund, PO Box 1265, Twentynine Palms, CA 92277.

Doris Russell, 85
ESCONDIDO - Doris L. Russell, 85, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, in Escondido.
Born Oct. 12, 1914, in Clarinda, Iowa, she lived in Escondido for 28 years. She was the owner and administrator of board and care homes and worked as a licensed vocational nurse for 15 years.
Mrs. Russell was preceded in death by her husband of 21 years, Ralph Ayers Russell. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Tammy Russell of Temecula and Robert and Mary Russell of Escondido; daughter and son-in-law Sandra and Ray Pullen of Sun City, Ariz.; sisters Helen Arthur of Hawaii and Darlene Smith of San Diego; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A private burial is planned.
The family suggests memorial donations to UCSD Cancer Center Foundation, 9500 Gilman Drive, Suite 3918, La Jolla, CA 92093-0658.

Joan Hawkins, 69
VISTA - Joan B. Hawkins, 69, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000.
Born June 11, 1931, in Bridgeport, Conn., she lived in Vista for 12 years. She was the owner of B&H Tool and Die Co. before retiring in 1995. She was the first woman president of the American Manufacturers Association of Connecticut. She enjoyed bridge, shopping, interior decorating, boating and animals.
Mrs. Hawkins is survived by her mother, Irene H. Brandt of San Marcos; son and daughter-in-law David and Catherine Hawkins of Vista; brother Barry Brandt of Upland; one niece and two nephews.
Viewing will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. today, Aug. 24, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary, with the Rev. Burt Boudoin officiating. A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25, at St. Mark's Catholic Church in San Marcos, with the Rev. Boudoin officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Ed Vistica, 78
SAN MARCOS - Edward Anthony Vistica, 78, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, of mesothelioma, at San Diego Hospice.
Born Dec. 25, 1921, in Portland, Ore., he lived at Lake San Marcos. He attended Blessed Sacrament Elementary School and Jefferson High School, serving as senior class president. He earned a bachelor of science degree in chemistry in 1946 and a master of science degree in organic chemistry in 1948, both at the University of Portland. He was a lieutenant junior grade in the U.S. Navy, serving as an engineering officer during World War II. He retired from the reserve in 1954. He was corporate vice president for Witco Chemical Corporation and director of West Coast Alkylate Operations, Monsanto Chemical Co. He was a research chemist, petrochemical engineer and sales manager for Portland Gas & Coke Co. and regional sales manager of Eastern States Petroleum. He was an emeritus lifetime member of the American Chemical Society and a member of the Rotary Club in Carson City. He enjoyed golf.
Mr. Vistica was preceded in death by his sister; his daughter; and his grandson, Scott Edward. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Virginia Vistica of Lake San Marcos; sons and daughters-in-law David and Barbara Vistica of Monrovia, Md., and Dan and Annette Vistica of Fair Oaks; brother and sister-in-law James and Carolyn Vistica of Milwaukie, Ore.; sister Rose Vistica of Portland, Ore.; five grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A concelebrated Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25, at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland, Ore. Vault interment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at noon Saturday, Sept. 2, at St. Mark's Catholic Church in San Marcos.
The family suggests memorial donations to the American Cancer Society, 12405 Rancho Bernardo Road, Suite 100, San Diego, CA 92128.

Caroline Speas, 79
ESCONDIDO - Caroline Ellen Speas, 79, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, at Palomar Medical Center.
Born Jan. 12, 1921, in Nebraska, she lived in Escondido for 25 years.
Mrs. Speas is survived by her husband of 58 years, Claire R. Speas; son Ray Speas of San Diego; daughter Dianna White of Salem, Ore.; and two grandchildren.
A private cremation is planned. A memorial service will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25, at Trinity Baptist Church in Poway.

Cheri Mills, 44
OCEANSIDE - Cheri L. Mills, 44, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, from complications due to asthma, at Tri-City Medical Center.
Born Aug. 3, 1956, in Anchorage, Alaska, she lived in Oceanside for 18 years. She worked for Albertsons grocery for 14 years and was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Mrs. Mills is survived by her husband of 25 years, Gleneth L. Mills of Oceanside; son Gregory Mills of Oceanside; daughter Shanna Mills of Oceanside; and sister Joni Pharis of Garnersburg, Md.
A memorial service will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, at the Old Richland School House. A private cremation is planned.

Louise Thompson, 94
ANAHEIM - Louise M. Thompson, 94, died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, at Walnut Manor Care Center in Anaheim.
Born Oct. 30, 1905, in New Salem, N.D., she lived in Riverside County for 30 years. She graduated from North Dakota University where she played basketball and volleyball and was a teacher at Alexandria High School in Minnesota for five years. She was a member of the Lions Club and Faith Lutheran Club, serving in the choir.
Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Thompson. She is survived by her daughter, Janis K. Mulcahy of Garden Grove; son Ronald Thompson of Sacramento; sister Selma Berdahl of Carlsbad; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at Evans Brown Sun City Chapel. Burial will take place at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 28, at Perris Valley Cemetery.
The family suggests memorial donations to Faith Lutheran Church, 28200 Portsmouth Drive, Sun City, CA 92586.

James Mogge, 69
SUN CITY - James Arnold Mogge, 69, died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, of cancer, at his home.
Born Dec. 14, 1930, in Covington, Ky., he lived in Sun City for 10 years. He was a financial consultant for Gould Inc., in East Lake, Ohio, for 43 years. He was a member of the Illinois Club, Cherry Hills Golf Club and St. Vincent's Ferrer Catholic Church in Sun City and performed with the Players Club, Wheeler Group.
Mr. Mogge is survived by his wife, Patricia Mogge of Sun City; sons James Mogge of Olney, Md., Stephen Mogge of Chicago, Patrick Mogge of Baltimore, Md., and Michael Mogge of Monterey; daughter Barbara Frank of Claremont; brothers John Mogge of Dothan, Ala., and Donald Mogge of Peris, Ky.; sister Elaine Kruse of Cincinnati; and five grandchildren.
Visitation was held and a rosary recited on Wednesday, Aug. 23, at Miller-Jones Mortuary. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. today, Aug. 24, at St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church. A graveside service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, at Riverside National Cemetery, Staging Area 1.

Johannes Wukas, 79
SUN CITY - Johannes Francis Wukas, 79, died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, of congestive heart failure.
Born May 2, 1921, in Buffalo, N.Y., he lived in Sun City for 13 years. He was a pilot and communications officer in the U.S. Air Force, retiring as a major after 25 years. He worked as a Los Angeles probation officer for more than 10 years. He was a Eucharistic minister at St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church. He enjoyed studying history and yoga.
Mr. Wukas was preceded in death by his son, Paul Brian Wukas. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Devene Wukas; daughters Jan Wukas of Seattle, Ann Hawkins of Huntington Beach; sister Dorothy Lord of Woodburn, Ore.; and nephew Tom Hawks of Canby, Ore.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25, at St. Vincent's Ferrer Catholic Church. Burial will take place at Riverside National Cemetery.

Sandy Smith, 59
EL CAJON - Sandy Smith, 59, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, of a pulmonary embolism, at Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego.
Born July 15, 1941, in Upland, she lived in El Cajon for three years and had lived in Temecula for 25 years. She attended Taft Union High School, Taft College and San Francisco State University. She was a personnel manager for Hudson RCI in Temecula for 20 years, retiring in 1991. She enjoyed the outdoors, camping and boating and was the first secretary of Temecula's Little League.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband, Don Smith of El Cajon; daughter Tracey Smith of Temecula; sons Brian Smith and David Smith, both of Temecula; father Blake Case of Taft; sister Carol Cross of Merced; and five grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Aug. 24, at Stout Family Funeral Home. A funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at 12:15 p.m. at Temecula Cemetery.

Frances Van Kirk, 73
FALLBROOK - Frances Mae Van Kirk, 73, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, at Naval Medical Center in San Diego.
Born July 13, 1927, in Eureka, Kan., she lived in Fallbrook for 12 years. She was a homemaker for more than 50 years and a member of the Lions Club in Fallbrook and Oceanside.
Mrs. Van Kirk is survived by her husband of 52 years, Theodore R. Van Kirk of Fallbrook; sons Stephen Van Kirk of Fallon, Nev., James Van Kirk of San Diego and Rodger Van Kirk of Carlsbad; daughters Nancy Countryman and Thea Van Kirk, both of Oceanside; brothers George Mann of Orange and Donald Mann of Boulder, Colo.; sisters Bessie Brookman of Denver, Ruth Blevens of Oregon and Christina Rivera of Nevada; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A private cremation is planned with cremation to take place on Friday, Aug. 25, at Fort Rosecrans National cemetery in Point Loma.

Janet Theriot, 89
ENCINITAS - Janet Carolyn Theriot, 89, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, at Manor Care Health Services.
Born May 29, 1911, in Lincoln, Neb., she lived in Encinitas for 42 years. She was a homemaker for 70 years.
Mrs. Theriot was preceded in death by her husband, Howard J. Theriot, in 1986. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Mike and Cheryl Theriot of Encinitas; daughter Claudia Thompson of Carlsbad; grandchildren Brent and Mark Theriot and Angela and Kristine Thompson; and great-grandchildren Nico Flihan and Sean Theriot.
A funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, at Eternal Hills Chapel. Burial will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Robbie Calloway, 56
OCEANSIDE - Robbie Mae Calloway, 56, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, at Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital.
Born June 21, 1944, in Victoria, Va., she lived in Oceanside for 20 years. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Calloway was preceded in death by her mother and father, Helen and Marion Wilson; brother Marion Wilson Jr. and sister Francis Wilson. She is survived by her former husband of 36 years, George C. Calloway of Oceanside; sons Clifton Calloway Jr. of Oceanside; former daughter-in-law Mary Daniels; future daughter-in-law Crystal Pickering; daughter Rhonda Calloway of Oceanside; brothers and sisters-in-law Melvin and Charolett Wilson, Loretta Wilson, Calvin Wilson and Bernard Wilson, all of Roanoake; sisters and brothers-in-law Marie and George Murrell and Brenda Williams, all of Plainfield, N.J., and Theresa Wilson and Carolyn Wilson, both of Roanoake; grandchildren Princess and Allyce Calloway and Nehemiah and Joshua Williams, all of Oceanside; and great-grandchild Alena Williams of Oceanside.
Viewing will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at Eternal Hills Mortuary. A funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, at the mortuary, with the Rev. Leroy West officiating. Interment will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30, in Roanoake.
