Helen Bakanowicz, 78
ROMOLAND - Helen Ruth Bakanowicz, 78, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, at Sun City Convalescent Center.
Born April 7, 1922, in Chicago, she lived in Romoland for 23 years. She was a homemaker for 57 years and a volunteer for Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in Sun City. She worked for Deutsch in Hemet for five years.
Mrs. Bakanowicz is survived by her husband, Edward Bakanowicz of Romoland; sons Robert Bakanowicz of Branson, Mo., and Dale Baker of Oakland; daughter Debbie Baker of Woodstock, Ill.; sister Marion Teeters of Phoenix; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Aug. 22, at Miller-Jones Sun City Mortuary. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, at Riverside National Cemetery, Staging Area 5.
Miller-Jones Mortuary Inc. is handling arrangements.

Margaret Lara, 38
VISTA - Margaret Marie Lara, 38, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at Scripps Torrey Pines Convalescent in La Jolla.
Born May 29, 1962, she lived in Vista for 38 years. She was a supervisor for Calloway Golf Co. and worked for Ralph Lauren Polo Outlet Center. She loved crafts and was a team mom for the Vista High School cheerleaders, Pop Warner and Tri-City Inline Hockey.
Mrs. Lara is survived by her mother and father, Angie and Ralph Cortez of Vista; sons Joey Lara and Nicholas Lara, both of Vista; daughter Kristi Lara of Vista; brothers Ralph Cortez Jr. of Temecula and Richard Cortez of Vista; sisters Monica Ann Cortez of San Diego and Mary Ann Cortez of Vista; and many other family members.
Viewing was held Friday, Aug. 18, at the old Mission San Luis Rey Church, with the Rev. Jorge Hernandez officiating. A Mass was celebrated Friday, Aug. 18, at the mission.
The family suggests memorial donations to the American Cancer Society, 12405 Rancho Bernardo Road, Suite 100, San Diego, CA 92128.

Ovar Waerstad, 75

ESCONDIDO - Ovar Hansen Waerstad, 75, died Friday, July 14, 2000, at his home.
Born Oct. 10, 1924, in Arendal, Norway, he lived in Escondido and had immigrated to the United States in 1953. He was a radio operator with the Norwegian underground in Bergen, Noway and worked for the Norwegian Police finding officers of the German occupation forces. He attended the Merchant Marine Institute Radio School in Arendal and served as a radio operator for the Merchant Marines. He was executive vice president for Atlas marine Supply in San Pedro before retiring after 25 years. He was a member and past president of Sons of Norway, Norge Lodge 6-60 in Vista, a member of the House of Norway in Balboa Park, a member of L.A. Harbor Masonic Lodge #332 and a member of the Norwegian Seaman's Church in San Pedro. He was recognized for his service in the underground by the Norwegian American Community at Sons of Norway and by the Norwegian Resistance Museum of Oslo, Norway, in 1999.
Mr. Waerstad was preceded in death by his first wife, Nadine Waerstad, in 1980. He is survived by his wife, Angeline Waerstad of Escondido; daughters Karen Waerstad Kennedy of Redding and Lisa Waerstad Witherspoon of Redondo Beach; son Eric Waerstad of Huntington Beach; and grandchildren Connor and Dylan Kennedy and Jack Witherspoon; nephews Alf, Ole-Hjell and Haakon Stallesen; and nieces Marian Stoland, Ouloug Stallesen, Laila Hagen and Solvig Vinningland, all of Norway.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at the Sons of Norway, Norge Lodge 6-60, in Vista, with the Rev. Orville G. Hiepler and Alf Pettersen officiating. A private cremation is planned with cremains to be returned to Norway to be interred beside his parents.

Marjorie Sanano, 61

VISTA - Marjorie Ellen Sanano, 61, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, at her home.
Born Jan. 25, 1939, in Cleveland, she lived in Vista for 32 years. She was an assistant merchandise manager for the Marine Corps Exchange at Camp Pendleton for 26 years and served in the Women's Army Corps during the Korean War.
Mrs. Sanano is survived by her husband of 41 years, Benjamin I. Sanano of Vista; mother Ida Miller of Euclid, Ohio; son Mark A. Sanano of Placentia; daughters Monica L. Sanano of Cave Creek, Ariz., and Laura M. Sanano of Carlsbad; brother David Fawcett of Mentor, Ohio; sisters Paula Bollam of Painesville, Ohio, and Arlene Ricci of Tampa, Fla.; and six grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Carlsbad, with the Rev. Joseph Mullen officiating. Inurnment will take place at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 28, at Fort Rosecrans National cemetery in Point Loma.

Mary Wallace, 65
OCEANSIDE - Mary Nell Wallace, 65, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, at her home.
Born Dec. 31, 1934, in Mississippi, she lived in Oceanside for 16 years. She was a supervisor accounting technician for MCAS El Toro.
Mrs. Wallace was preceded in death by her son, James Douglas Wallace, this year. She is survived by her son, Rick Wallace of San Francisco; daughter Cheryl Wallace of Fort Worth, Texas; and brother and sister-in-law Bobby Joe and Carolyn Johnson of Jackson, Miss.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park, with the Rev. Barry Jones officiating. Burial will follow.

Philip Calzada, 80
OCEANSIDE - Philip E. Calzada, 80, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, at his home.
Born May 2, 1920, in Sierra Blanca, Texas, he lived in Oceanside for 41 years. He worked for the city of Oceanside and was a journeyman for the Carpenter's Union Local 1021. He served in the Army Corps of Engineers and was a high priest in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Mr. Calzada was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and son Rudy Calzada. He is survived by his wife, Carley S. Calzada of Oceanside; sons RaDean Hancock of Syracuse, Utah, and Reed Hancock of Oceanside; daughters Louise Gardner of Tampa, Fla., Carley Van Lenten of Provo, Utah, Lurena Henry of Oceanside and Debbie Dallas of Elk Ridge, Utah; brother Frank Calzada of Santa Clarita; sister Caroline Diaz of Bell Gardens; numerous grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Melrose in Vista. A funeral service will follow at 10 a.m., with Bishop Christensen officiating. Interment will take place at Riverside National Cemetery.

June McCament, 76

PALA - June Lisette McCament, 76, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix.
Born June 1, 1924, in Milwaukee, she lived in Pala for 30 years. She was a homemaker and served in the U.S. Navy Hospital Corps during World War II.
Mrs. McCament was preceded in death by her son, Earl "Hank" Meeker, on Sept. 5, 1997. She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Leroy D. "Bud" McCament of Pala; daughter-in-law Yolanda Meeker of Wildomar; daughters Laurinda Meeker of Escondido, Maureen Horne of Eureka and Ruth Signes of Pala; brothers Bill Radtke of Dayton, Nev., and Richard Radtke of Redlands; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary, with Dave McCament officiating. A private interment with military honors will take place at Riverside National Cemetery.

Charles Wise, 91

VISTA - Charles I. Wise Sr., 91, died Thursday, July 13, 2000, at Rancho Vista Retirement home.
Born June 16, 1909, in Reading, Pa., he lived in Vista for three years.
He was a technical sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945 and a member of La Canada Presbyterian Church from 1955 to 1989.
Mr. Wise was preceded in death by his mother and father, Annie Filman Wise and Irvin Ellsworth Wise. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Regine A. Wise of Vista; son Charles Irvin Wise Jr. of Encinitas; grandchildren Charles J. Wise, Kimberly J. Wise and Kelly C. Estes; and great-grandchildren Charles Joshua Wise, William Luke Wise, Nathaniel Wise, Hayden Estes, Bailey Estes and Mason Estes.
A memorial service was held Saturday, July 15, at Rancho Vista Retirement home. Inurnment took place at Forest Lawn, Glendale, in the Columbarium of Honor, Court of Freedom.
The family suggests memorial donations to the Alzheimer's Association of San Diego, 8514 Commerce Ave., San Diego, CA 92121.

Charlotte DeNicola, 88
ESCONDIDO - Charlotte A. DeNicola 88, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, in Escondido.
Born Jan. 2, 1912, in Duren, Germany, she lived in Escondido for one year and was a research developer for Electro Dynamics before retiring in 1974.
Mrs. DeNicola was preceded in death by her husband, Torquato DeNicola, in 1949; and her husband, Willi Berg, in 1940. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law,
Dieter Wolfgang and Beverly Berg of Ramona and Michael G. and Reggie DeNicola of Fallbrook; daughters and sons-in-law Alyce E. Fitzpatrick of Murrieta Hot Springs, Rosa M. and Donald Mills of Pacific Beach and Dea A. and David Matthias of San Diego; 22 grandchildren; and 43 great-grandchildren.
A Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at St. Brigid's Catholic Church in San Diego, with the Rev. Peter Escalante officiating. A private cremation is planned.
The family suggests memorial donations to Noah Homes, 12526 Campo Road, Spring Valley, CA 92178.

Betty Maine, 50
VISTA - Betty Toledo Maine, 50, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, at Scripps Memorial Hospital in Encinitas.
Born Jan. 12, 1950, in North Carolina, she lived in Vista and was a North County resident for 20 years. She was a licensed minister for the Church of Spiritual Philosophy for more than 12 years.
Mrs. Maine was preceded in death by her daughter, Treahnna Hallam Toledo, in 1996. She is survived by her husband, Darryl A. Maine of Vista; father Carl Davis of Santa Ana; son Michael Toledo of Mira Mesa; brother Carl Davis Jr. of Vista; and sisters Maria Watkins of Torrance, Cindy Corrigan of Fontana and Dianne Davis of Santa Ana.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, at Allen Brothers Mortuary, Vista Chapel. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25, at Allen Brothers Mortuary, Vista Chapel. Interment will follow at San Marcos Cemetery.

Hazel Cain, 95
ESCONDIDO - Hazel V. Cain, 95, died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, at her home.
Born April 30, 1905, in Los Angeles, she lived in Escondido and had lived in Clinton, Ill. She was a member of the Myrtle Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star for 50 years, past noble grand of Rebekahs of Weldon, Ill., past officer of Magdala White Shrine in Clinton and past regent Dewitt/Clinton Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a 48-year member of Young Ladies' Radio League and a member of the Breakfast Club, both amateur radio clubs. She was a past member of the John Warner Hospital Auxiliary in Clinton and a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Dewitt. She was a musician and soloist and the hostess and chairperson at the retirement residence where she lived. She enjoyed crafts and needlework.
Mrs. Cain was preceded in death by her husband, Claude S. Cain. She is survived by her son, Stanley Rhea of Rancho Mirage; daughter Winona Houlihan of Escondido; sister Elizabeth Grohs of Santa Ana; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one nephew; and one niece.
A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30, at DeWitt cemetery in Illinois, with the Rev. J. Kent Hickerson officiating. Inurnment will follow. The family suggests memorial donations to R.P. Foundation for the Blind, Financial Manager, Executive Suite 800, 11350 S. McCormick Road, Hunt Valley, MD 21031-1018.

Mary Ammerman, 86
ESCONDIDO - Mary G. Ammerman, 86, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, at a local convalescent home.
Born April 15, 1914, in Columbus, Ohio, she lived in Escondido for 34 years. She was a homemaker for 65 years and a member of Escondido Country Club.
Mrs. Ammerman is survived by her husband of 65 years, Walter R. Ammerman of Escondido; son Bob W. Ammerman of Milwaukie, Ore.; daughter Carol Grandolf of Lake Forest; brother Harvey Howison of Chillicothe, Ohio; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, at Escondido Country Club. A private cremation is planned.
The family suggests memorial donations to a charity of choice.

Marjorie Hostetter, 80
RANCHO CALIFORNIA - Marjorie Lewis Hostetter, 80, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, in San Diego.
Born Feb. 14, 1920, in Humeston, Iowa, she lived in Rancho California. She was a school district employee and fashion model before retiring.
Mrs. Hostetter is survived by her daughters, Mary Stratton of Healdsburg and Karen Gerring of San Diego and Kingman, Ariz.; sons Michael Holland of Reno, Nev., and Martin Holland of Malad City, Idaho; sisters Pauline Dudis of Post Falls, Idaho, and Katharyn Peter of Albuquerque, N.M.; brother Warren Boggs of Fallbrook; and six grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, at Risher Mortuary in Montebello. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m., also at the mortuary, (323) 728-1261.

Ashley Kirby, 2 months
MCPHERSON, Kan. - Ashley Nicole Kirby, 2 months, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, at McPherson Memorial Hospital. She was born June 22, 2000, in McPherson.
Ashley is survived by her parents, David and Eve Kirby of McPherson; brother Ethan James Kirby of McPherson; grandparents Carol Anderson of Oceanside, Wes Lester of Baton Rouge, La., James and Prasarn Kirby of Wichita, Kan.; great-grandparents Barbara Taylor of Denham Springs, La., Les Lester of Virginia and Kenneth Taylor of Bell, Fla.; and great-great-grandmother Mildred McAllister of Baton Rouge.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to service time on Thursday, Aug. 24, at Stockham Family A graveside service will follow at 11 a.m. at McPherson cemetery in McPherson, with the Rev. Neil Engle officiating.

Hugh Lentz, 75
FALLBROOK - Hugh D. Lentz, 75, died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, in Fallbrook.
Born Aug. 24, 1924, in Belleville, Ill., he lived in Fallbrook for 32 years. He was an avocado and flower grower for more than 25 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the Civil Air Patrol in New Mexico, working as a private pilot for more than 40 years, and a member of the Rotary Club in Fallbrook and St. John's Episcopal Church in Fallbrook.
Mr. Lentz is survived by his wife of 52 years, Bonnie Lentz of Fallbrook; and brother David Lentz of Mill City, Ore.
A private cremation is planned with cremains to be scattered at sea off the coast of San Diego County.
The family suggests memorial donations to the Arthritis Foundation, 9089 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., Suite 300, San Diego, CA 92123.

Robert Barrett, 79
OCEANSIDE - Robert P. Barrett, 79, died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, in Vista.
Born Aug. 9, 1921, in California, he lived in Oceanside. He worked for Southern California Edison and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Mr. Barrett is survived by his wife of 55 years, Margaret Barrett of Oceanside; son and daughter-in-law Daryl and Patti Barrett of California; brother Don Gibb of Colorado; and grandchildren Jon Basinski, Shan Buell and Kari Barrett.
Visitation will be held from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. today, Aug. 24, at Eternal Hills Mortuary. A graveside service and burial will follow at 2 p.m. at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.
