VISTA - Darleene Lasley Vansant, 72, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at Tri-City Medical Center.
Born Aug. 25, 1927, in Long Beach, she lived n Vista for 15 years and had lived in Riverside. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Vansant was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Edwin Vansant, in 1991; and her sister, Phyllis Woodard, in 1998. She is survived by her sons, Steven Vansant of Corona, Neil Vansant of Riverside and Mark Vansant of Los Osos; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
A private memorial service is planned. A private inurnment will take place at Riverside National Cemetery.

VISTA - George Edward Winch, 92, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at his home.
Born July 31, 1908, in Stillwater, Minn., he lived in Vista for 25 years. He was a plant manager for Federal Cartridge Corp. for 43 years and a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Mr. Winch is survived by his son, George S. Winch of Fallbrook; daughter Pamela Winch-Matoyoshi of Oceanside; and two grandchildren.
No formal service is planned. A private cremation will take place, with burial at Linwood cemetery in Linwood, Minn.

OCEANSIDE - Edward Blaes, 87, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, at his home.
Born Oct. 14, 1912, in Cherryville, Kan., he lived in Oceanside for 12 years. He was a salesman and owner of an automotive paints and repair business before retiring in 1987. He served as a 1st lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Elks Club.
Mr. Blaes is survived by his wife of 29 years, Constance Blaes of Oceanside; sons Jack Olson of Utah and Jim Blaes of Atascadero; daughters Linda of South Dakota and Dolores Blaes of Oklahoma City, Okla.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today, Aug. 11, at Eternal Hills Chapel. Interment will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

RAMONA - Evelyn V. Kalajian, 73, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at a local hospital.
Born May 17, 1927, in Matoka, W.Va., she lived in Ramona for 14 years and had lived in Arcadia. She was a homemaker and enjoyed RV travel and flowers and going to the Ramona Senior Center.
Mrs. Kalajian is survived by her husband of 53 years, Ed Kalajian of Ramona; sons Jerry Kalajian of Venice and Greg Kalajian of La Mesa; and brother Troy Stinson of West Virginia.
A graveside service was held Wednesday, Aug. 9, at Nuevo Memory Gardens, with the Rev. Pete Mayfield officiating. Burial followed.

James McWhorter, 81
RAMONA - James Hugh "Old Jim" McWhorter, 81, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at a local convalescent hospital.
Born Sept. 24, 1918, in Glendale, he lived in Ramona since 1952. He raised turkeys and was a farm and land broker, selling to such clients as Jimmy Cagney, Bill Cagney, Ralph Bellamy and Buddy Epson. He was past president of the Ramona School Board, a member of the Ramona Chamber of Commerce, and he served as president of the local board of Realtors. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award for more than 40 years of real estate and community service to Ramona in 1993. He helped form the Ramona Water District and served in the U.S. Army during World War II, defending the Aleutian Islands. He graduated from San Diego State University with honors in 1949.
Mr. McWhorter is survived by his wife of 56 years, Margaret McWhorter of Ramona; sons and daughters-in-law Jim and Cynthia Salow McWhorter and Arthur and MaryEllen McWhorter, all of Ramona; daughters and sons-in-law Venus Catherine Andrecht, Polly and Dr. Ron Meyers and Candy and Steve Smiley, all of Ramona, and Barbara and John Raifsnider of San Diego; grandchildren Summer Andrecht McStravick, Michael and Joshua Meyers, Nicole and Trenton Smiley; and great-grandchildren Tyler and Kaylee Meyers.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, at Bonham Bros. & Lee Ramona Chapel. A reception will follow at the San Vicente Country Club.

ARMSTRONG, B.C. - Dr. Richard Wayne Poirier, 57, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at his home.
Born in 1943 in Armstrong, B.C., he lived in the Grandview Flats area. He attended Grandview Academy and studied at Canadian University in Lacombe, Alberta, at Walla Walla College in Washington and at Loma Linda University, where he completed graduate and doctoral degrees in dentistry. He enjoyed snowskiing, hockey, barefoot waterskiing and golfing. He also enjoyed collecting antiques and admired old trucks and tractors.
Dr. Poirier is survived by his mother, Eleanor Poirier of Armstrong; brother and sister-in-law Frank and Cyndi Poirier of Enderby, B.C.; stepdaughter Michelle of Visalia; grandchildren Ryan, Ashley and Chelsey; and nephews Frank Jr., Barton Wayne and Jacques.

Born Aug. 2, 1924, in Cleveland, he lived in Oceanside for seven years. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS NOA and the USS Arcadia.
Mr. Brooke was preceded in death by his daughter, Susan Miller. He is survived by his wife of seven years, Mary Brooke of Oceanside; daughter Karen Brooke of New York; sister June Daniels of Florida; and four grandchildren.

Mrs. Walters is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Michael Gunn of Ramona; daughter Sharon Vickers of West Palm Beach; sister Patricia Kahn of Palm Beach; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

RANCHO BERNARDO - Sally Ann Berkos, 71, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, of acute leukemia and kidney dysfunction, at Pomerado Hospital.
Born Dec. 6, 1928, in Illinois, she lived in Rancho Bernardo. She was a pre-school teacher in Reseda for eight years. She attended St. Mary's School in Des Plaines, Ill., and graduated from Columbia College, majoring in creative writing. She wrote many short stories and poems and enjoyed oil painting and watercolors, collecting antique dolls, Valentines and paper dolls.
Mrs. Berkos is survived by her husband of 50 years, Peter Berkos of Rancho Bernardo; stepchildren Peter Berkos Jr., Linda Berkos and Terry Berkos; seven stepgrandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Born Nov. 17, 1940, in Lindenhurst, N.Y., he lived in Vista for 23 years. He was a telecommunications technician for Tel Com Tec in San Marcos and had retired from AT&T. He served in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1962 in the Panama Canal Zone.
Mr. Lamm was preceded in death by his sister, Arline Guth, in 1971; and his mother and father Florence and William Lamm. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Lynn Lamm of Vista; son David Lam of Glendora; daughter Stephanie Riedeman of Wheat Ridge, Colo.; brothers Willis Lamm of Kitty Hawk, N.C., and Marshall Lamm of Lindenhurst; and grandchildren Gwen Riedeman and Sam Riedeman, both of Wheat Ridge.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Dolores Semo of Oceanside; son Timothy Taa Semo of Oceanside; brothers and sisters-in-law Mosooi and Lua Mapu and Semo and Fau Semo Jr., all of American Samoa; and sister and brother-in-law Mary and Tapuni Misa of Oceanside.
