William Swink, 89
OCEANSIDE - William Houston Swink, 89, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at Tri-City Medical Center.
Born Sept. 18, 1910, in Calexico, he lived in Carlsbad for more than 25 years.
Mr. Swink was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Swink, in 1997. He is survived by his sons and daughter-in-law, Mark Swink of San Diego and Danny and Nina Smith of Campo; daughters and son-in-law Karen and John McCann of La Mesa and Sharon Hansen of Red Bluff; and 12 grandchildren.
A private cremation was held.
El Camino Memorial, Encinitas Chapel, is handling arrangements.

Carmelo Pina, 82
ESCONDIDO - Carmela Pina, 82, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at her home.
Born July 21, 1918, in Puerto Rico, he lived in Escondido and previously lived in Ramona. He served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant from 1941 to 1945 in Panama where he trained soldiers to use heavy artillery for the Pacific Campaign. He was an auto mechanic, specializing in rebuilding engines and competed in billiard tournaments, winning many trophies.
Mr. Pina is survived by his wife of 53 years, Julia B. Pina of Escondido; daughters and son-in-law Margaret "Maggie" and Mike De Young of Ramona and Alicia Simoneaux of San Bernardino; brother Gullermo Pina of Los Angeles; sister Juanita Pina of Shasta County; and grandchildren Luna, Anthony, Gabriel, Jeremy and Nicholas.
A graveside service will be held at 11:15 a.m. Monday, Aug. 7, at Riverside National Cemetery, Staging Area 2. Burial will follow.
Bonham Bros. & Lee Mortuary is handling arrangements.

Lillian Archer, 87
ESCONDIDO - Lillian W. Archer, 87, died Wednesday, July 26, 2000, in Escondido.
Born Nov. 7, 1912, in Howe, Texas, she lived in Escondido for 12 years. She was a homemaker, former school teacher, former owner of a World War II uniform shop and a seamstress. She enjoyed golfing, playing Scrabble, cooking, crossword puzzles, traveling and camping.
Mrs. Archer was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, George Gordon Archer, in 1994. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, David and Anita Archer of Escondido and Charles and Junnie Archer of Valley Center; daughters and sons-in-law Dawne and Bill Sheppard of Sun City, Jacqueline and Ray Grisolano of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Leslie and Paul Mayer of Escondido; brother and sister-in-law William and Joann Roberts of Sherman, Texas; sister Kathleen Roberts of Sherman; uncle W.W. Collins of Sherman; aunt Margaret Collins of Sherman; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Monday, July 31, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary, with Sgt. Andrew Mille officiating. Burial followed at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
Alhiser-Comer Mortuary handled arrangements.

Walter Wallace, 80
POWAY - Walter W. Wallace, 80, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000.
Born May 30, 1920, in Vernon, Mo., he lived in San Marcos for 14 years. He was an insurance investigator for the State of California Insurance Commission for 21 years before retiring. He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Elks Club.
Mr. Wallace was preceded in death by his sister, Miriam Hall; and brother Howard Wallace. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Wilda Wallace; sisters Frances Dodge and Merna Snowardt of Nebraska; brother Calvin Wallace of Nebraska; and several nieces and nephews.
No service will be held at the request of the deceased.
The family suggests memorial donations to Kaiser Hospice, 10992 San Diego Mission Road, 3rd Floor, Bldg. 2, San Diego, CA 92108.

Wilma Fairchild, 88
FALLBROOK - Wilma Fairchild, 88, died Friday, July 28, 2000.
Born Sept. 8, 1911, in a small farming community of Lowell in Kent County, Michigan, she lived in Fallbrook for many years. She served as administrator for the Fallbrook Convalescent Hospital before retiring in 1983 and helped maintain an avocado grove. She took nursing at Blodget Hospital in Michigan, did nursing for an osteopath in Lowell for several years and co-founded the Fairchild Gas and Oil business in Lowell in 1940.
Mrs. Fairchild is survived by her husband of 70 years, Arnold Fairchild; daughter Renee D. Watson; sister Marion Rutherford; grandchildren Kim, Cindi and Tom; eight great-grandchildren; and three generations of nieces and nephews.
A small private service was held at the Fairchild's home.

Laurette Fuquay, 77
CARLSBAD - Laurette Fuquay, 77, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at her home.
Born Aug. 10, 1922, in Los Angeles, she lived in Carlsbad at Lutheran Retirement Home. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
Mrs. Fuquay was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace M. Fuquay. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Gene L. and Barbara Mason of Colorado and Edward "Gus" Swiggers of Santa Ysabel; daughter and son-in-law Nina and Gary Hunt of Vista; and grandchildren Jess and Michele Swiggers, Roland, Ian, Amiel and Zane Mason.
A private service is planned.
Her body will be donated to science at the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine.

Harold Thomas, 77
VISTA - Harold "Tom" Thomas, 77, died Saturday, July 29, at his home.
Born Feb. 5, 1923, in Newton, Kan., he lived in Vista since 1957. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Tarawa, Okinawa, Japan and Korea and served in the San Diego Sheriff's Reserves for several years.
Mr. Thomas is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marie Thomas; sons Steve Thomas of Los Gatos and Mark Thomas of Washougal, Wash.; daughters Joy Thomas of Long and Patricia Sellers of Vista; sister Harriet Patton of Newton, Kan.; and grandchildren Cassandra and Heather Iams, Jane and Edward William Scott Thomas and Sara and Jesse Thomas.
A private cremation was held with cremains scattered at sea.

Sally Hosler, 64
ORANGE, N.J. - Sally Hosler, 64, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, of non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
Born April 2, 1936, in Orange, N.J., she lived in Poway for 26 years. She was the co-owner of Service Office Supply, Poway Valley Stationers for 26 years. She was a member of PEO Chapter SX in Rancho Bernardo and the First Church of Christ Scientist in Poway and Rancho Bernardo. She was a Poway Chamber of Commerce Ambassador.
Mrs. Hosler was preceded in death by her father, James Baldwin, in 1975; and her mother, Virginia Baldwin, in 1972. She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Norm Hosler of Poway; daughters and sons-in-law Peggy and Eric Hayes of Kalispell, Mont., and Ginny and Bob Ford of Glen Burnie, Md.; brother Jay Baldwin of Penngrove; and grandchildren Jesse Hosler and Cody Hosler of Kalispell and Sarah Ford of Glen Burnie.
A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7, at Poway-Bernardo Mortuary, with Pamela Scott officiating. Interment will take place at Dearborn Memorial Park.

Fred Kauper, 89
SAN MARCOS - Fred Emil Kauper, 89, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, at a local hospital.
Born April 21, 1911, in Chicago, he lived in San Marcos for 22 years. He was a machinist, building locomotives for Electro-Motive Co. and worked for Blue Ribbon BakeWare and Western Brass Works, totaling 30 years. He was a real estate broker for Allied Realty and a member of St. Mark's Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed photography and astronomy.
Mr. Kauper is survived by his wife of 60 years, Virginia M. Kauper of San Marcos; son and daughter-in-law Fred Jr. and Kathy Kauper of Naperville, Ill.; daughter Judy Bertels of West Covina; brother Horace Kauper of Brookfield, Ill.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at St. Mark's Catholic Church in San Marcos, with the Rev. George Dunkley officiating. A private cremation is planned with cremains to be scattered at sea.

Jose Delgado, 61
SAN MARCOS - Jose Eduardo Delgado, 61, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, at a local hospital.
Born May 22, 1939, in Quito, Ecuador, he lived in San Marcos for 12 years. He owned San Remo Co., a retail grocer, for 25 years.
Mr. Delgado is survived by his wife, Gloria Delgado of San Marcos; sons and daughters-in-law Jose E. Delgado Jr. and companion Polina DelFranco of San Diego, Fernando and Zenaida Delgado of San Marcos and Giovanny and Suzanne Cabezas of Austin, Texas; brothers and sisters-in-law Marco Sr. and Blanca Delgado of North Hollywood, Manuel and Anna Delgado of Quito and Diego Delgado of San Diego; sisters and brother-in-law Mercedes Delgado and Catalina and Hugo Basantes, all of Quito; and granddaughter Sophis Delgado of San Marcos.
Viewing will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, at Allen Brothers Mortuary, San Marcos Chapel. A funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7, at Allen Brothers Mortuary, San Marcos Chapel, with the Rev. Giovanny Cabezas and Mr. Noel Torres officiating. Burial will follow at San Marcos Cemetery.

Doris Ditmyer, 74
FALLBROOK - Doris May Ditmyer, 74, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, at her home.
Born Nov. 6, 1925, in San Diego, she lived in Fallbrook. She was the owner of Bowen Typographer and worked as a graphic artist for 10 years. She was an accomplished quilter and seamstress.
Mrs. Ditmyer was preceded in death by her daughter, Barbara Grosswiler, and grandson, Kevin Grosswiler, both in May 1978. She is survived by her husband, Arthur Ditmyer of Fallbrook; daughters Susan Ditmyer of San Leandro, Patty Manning of Moreno Valley, Nancy Deckert of Fallbrook and Caroline Sanchez of Oceanside; and four grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 7, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Fallbrook. A private cremation is planned.
The family suggests memorial donations to St. Peter's Catholic Church, 450 S. Stage Coach Lane, Fallbrook, CA 92028.

Effie Birdsall, 94
RAMONA - Effie May Birdsall, 94, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, in Escondido.
Born April 4, 1906, in Clay County, Iowa, she lived in Escondido at Sunny Board & Care Home and had lived in San Diego County since 1960. She worked for Point Loma Naval Base and the post office in Santa Ysabel. She was a homemaker and a member of a bridge club in Ramona.
Mrs. Birdsall was preceded in death by her husband, Howard R. Birdsall, in 1982; her sons, Eldean Birdsall and Roland Birdsall; and daughter Evelyn Edwards. She is survived by her sisters, Evelyn Merchant and Ester Frost, both of Iowa; and grandchildren Jean Ingram, Cindy Stover, Gary Birdsall and Mark Birdsall.

Arthur Hicks, 73
VISTA - Arthur Hicks, 73, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, in Oceanside.
Born Sept. 30, 1926, in El Paso, Texas, he lived in Vista for 27 years. He was the owner of Hicks Farm Supply Inc. and Hicks Chemical Co. in San Marcos for 20 years.
Mr. Hicks is survived by his wife of 34 years, Stella Hicks of Vista; daughter and son-in-law Yvonne and William Hines of Vista; sister Rosa Remillard of Ventura; and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7, at Eternal Hills Mortuary. A Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, at St. Margaret's Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Joseph Molden, 88
LEUCADIA - Joseph Oliver Molden, 88, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, at Manor Care Health Services.
Born Aug. 5, 1911, in Iowa, he lived in Leucadia for 35 years. He was a self-employed landscaper and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He died on the 63rd anniversary of his marriage.
Mr. Molden was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Molden, in 1997. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Stan Nash of San Clemente; and niece Pam Deines of San Clemente.
A memorial service and inurnment will take place at a later time.

Bernice Fransen, 86
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Bernice Fransen, 86, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, from a stroke suffered July 25.
Born and raised in Yampa, Colo., she had lived in Escondido. She earned a teaching certificate from Colorado State College in Greeley, Colo. and taught in a one-room schoolhouse outside Steamboat Springs, Colo. She taught in a two-room schoolhouse outside of Brush, Colo. She was a member of Emmanuel Faith Community Church in Escondido and attended Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Annapolis.
Mr. Fransen is survived by her husband of 62 years, Forest Fransen of Annapolis; twin sister Bertha Trantham of Craig, Colo.; daughter Janet Smith of San Francisco; son Larry Fransen of Annapolis; and eight grandchildren.

H. Lorraine Hendrickson, 78
ENCINITAS - H. Lorraine Hendrickson, 78, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000.
She was born in Chicago and worked as assistant to the director of retirement planning for Prudential Insurance Co. in Los Angeles. She also worked as a caregiver and was a member of Faith Community Church by the Sea in Del Mar. She was active in Forest Home Christian Conference Center.
Mrs. Hendrickson was preceded in death by her husband, Russell J. Hendrickson, in 1977. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Robert J. and Cynthia Ricketts of Montpelier, Vt.; niece and her husband Elizabeth and Ned Battey; nephew Daniel Ricketts of Nanjemoy, Md.; and great-nephews Kip Battey, Nick Battey and Luke Battey, all of Chelsea, Vt.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, at 520 Lomas Santa Fe Drive, Suite A, in Solana Beach, with the Rev. David Slottje officiating.
The family suggests memorial donations to San Diego Hospice, 4311 Third Ave., San Diego, CA 92103; Forest Home Christian Conference Center, Forest Falls, CA 92334; or Faith Community Church by the Sea, 530 Lomas Santa Fe Drive, Suite A-B, Solana Beach, CA 92075.

Eloise Picking, 89
RANCHO BERNARDO - Eloise Picking, 89, died Tuesday, July 25, 2000, in Rancho Bernardo.
Born Jan. 17, 1911, in New York City, she lived in Rancho Bernardo for 11 years. She was a teacher for the Palos Verdes School District before retiring.
Mrs. Picking is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Eloise and Michael Dorich of Vista; brother-in-law Wil Throne of Rancho Bernardo; nieces Maureen Henderson of Shelby, N.C., and Iris Berg of Illinois; grandchildren Lisamarie Robinson of Modesto and Michael Dorich of Auburn; and great-grandchildren Lauren and Cortney Robinson.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Aug. 5, at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in Poway, with the Rev. Ned Kellogg officiating. A private cremation was held.

Jerry Lee Roberts, 64
TEMECULA - Jerry Lee Roberts, 64, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, at Fallbrook Hospital.
Born March 7, 1936, in Los Angeles, he lived in Temecula for 20 years. He was the owner of J & R Concrete Pumping & Creative Hydroseed Inc. for 30 years. He enjoyed boating and sports and was a member of the California Landscape Association, Inland Empire and the Concrete Pump Association. He served in the U.S. Air Force.
Mr. Roberts is survived by his wife, Cheryl Roberts of Temecula; son and daughter-in-law Kurt and Michelle Roberts of Maui, Hawaii; daughters and sons-in-law Jana and Harry Nelson of Newport Beach, Amy and David Malpee of Redondo Beach, Shelly Fox of Aliso Viejo and Katie and Jim Lambert of Aliso Viejo; sister Judy Hele of Claremont; and grandchildren Aja Roberts of Manhattan Beach, Isabella Malpee of Redondo Beach, Harrison Nelson of Newport Beach and Blake Roberts of Maui.
Visitation was held Friday, Aug. 4, at Valley Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will take place at 10 a.m. today, Aug. 5, at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Temecula. Burial will follow at Temecula Cemetery.
