Irene Larriva, 81

ESCONDIDO - Irene Margaret Larriva, 81, died Sunday, April 20, 2000, in Escondido.

Born Jan. 25, 1919, in Akron, Ohio, she lived in Escondido for five years. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Larriva is survived by her husband of 60 years, Armando Larriva of Escondido; daughters Margo Gregor of Lodi and Michelle Milne of Durango; sister Marcella Carosella of Valley Center; grandchildren Kelly, Colleen, Ken, Jessica and Mac; and eight great-grandchildren.

A Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, April 28, at Church of the Resurrection in Escondido.

Alhiser-Comer Mortuary is handling arrangements.

Michael Shahan, 55

ESCONDIDO - Michael Earl Shahan, 55, died Saturday, April 22, 2000.

Born April 4, 1945, in Idaho, he lived in Escondido for 40 years. He was a painter for American Design for 30 years.

Mr. Shahan is survived by his father, Wilfred Ray Shahan of San Diego; and brother Howard E. Shahan of Poway.

A memorial service is pending.

Poway-Bernardo Mortuary is handling arrangements.

Shirley Cooper, 64

ESCONDIDO - Shirley Maureen Cooper, 64, died Monday, April 24, 2000, in Escondido.

Born May 28, 1935, in Escondido, he lived in Escondido for 64 years. He was an employment supervisor before retiring in 1998.

Ms. Cooper is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Maureen and Tim Horner of Grass Valley; sister Joan Myerson of Escondido; nephew Robert Myerson of San Diego; nieces Andrea Myerson-Gilley of Ramona and Marcia Trussell of Los Angeles; and three grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 28, at Oak Hill Memorial Park, with the Rev. Richard Huls officiating.

Marie Griffis, 90

MURRIETA - Marie H. Griffis, 90, died Friday, April 21, 2000, of a heart attack, at Rancho Springs Medical Center.

She was born Aug. 14, 1909.

Mrs. Griffis is survived by her daughter, Nannette Villalobos; and five grandchildren in Temecula and El Cajon.

Visitation was held Monday, April 24, at Valley Funeral Home. Burial followed at El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego.

Valley Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Alice Garot, 87

PERRIS - Alice Marjorie Garot, 87, died Tuesday, April 25, 2000, at Ember Care in Perris.

Born June 3, 1912, in Monolith, she lived in Sun City for 36 years. She was a homemaker in Sun City for 60 years. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Sun City.

Mrs. Garot is survived by her son, Michael Garot of Lakewood; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at noon Saturday, April 29, at Inglewood Park Cemetery. Burial will follow.

Joseph Morrissey, 851

RIVERSIDE - Joseph Morrissey, 85, died Friday, April 21, 2000, at Senior Focus Residential Care Home in Riverside.

Born Feb. 20, 1915, in New York City, he lived in Riverside for 30 years. He was a steamfitter for J.L. Murphy in New York City for 30 years and served in the U.S. Navy from 1932 to 1936. He was a member of the Elks Lodge 1485 and Exalted Ruler of Hempstead, N.Y., from 1970 to 1971 and 1976 to 1977.

Mr. Morrissey was preceded in death by his son, Richard Thomas Morrissey, in 1969. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Morrissey of Sun City; daughters Carolyn Caiazzo of Saugerties, N.Y., and Dorothy Sautter of Gig Harbor, Wash.; brother William Morrissey of Floral Park, N.Y.; sister Sally Krajicek of Montauk, N.Y., and Grace Thornley of Phoenix; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held and a rosary recited on Wednesday, April 26, at Miller-Jones Mortuary & Crematory. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. today, April 27, at St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church.

Ruth Sanders, 69

OCEANSIDE - Ruth E. Sanders, 69, died Sunday, April 23, 2000, at Tri-City Medical Center.

Born March 9, 1931, in Vermont, she lived in Oceanside for 28 years. She was an executive secretary for American Savings, retiring in 1993.

Mrs. Sanders was preceded in death by her son, Steven Stone, in 1976. She is survived by her husband of 25 years, George Sanders of Oceanside; stepsons George Sanders III of Arkansas and John "Mike" Sanders of Vista; stepdaughter Kimberly Sanders of Texas; brother Charles Buckley of San Marcos; sisters Jeri Wheelock of Vista and Norma Wilson of Hemet; and many nephews and nieces.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., with a rosary recited at 7 p.m., Thursday, April 27, at Eternal Hills Mortuary Chapel. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, April 28, at Eternal Hills Mortuary Chapel, with the Rev. John Dolan officiating. Burial will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Nellie Cole, 93

RAMONA - Nellie Coleman Coon Cole, 93, died Sunday, April 23, 2000, at a local convalescent hospital.

Born July 30, 1906, in Tooele, Utah, she lived in Ramona for six years. She was a nurse for 75 years and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Ramona Second Ward.

Mrs. Cole is survived by her son, Ralph Verl Coon of Chatsworth; daughters Betty L. Richardson and Alice Faye Backus, both of Ramona and Cherie Nichols of Palmdale; brother Ralph Stevens of Washington; 15 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today, April 26, at Bonham Bros. & Lee Ramona Chapel. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, April 27, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Ramona. A committal service and entombment will follow at 1 p.m. at Glen Abbey Memorial Park in Bonita.

The family suggests memorial donations to the American Heart Association, PO Box 3625, San Diego, CA 92103.

Thomas Hodder, 56

SAN DIEGO - Thomas C. Hodder, 56, died Friday, April 21, 2000, at his home.

Born Feb. 6, 1944, in Lincoln, Neb., he lived in Carmel Valley for one year. He was a mechanical engineer for Tucson Electrical Power Company in Arizona.

Mr. Hodder is survived by his wife, Gail B. Hodder of Carmel Valley; sons and daughters-in-law Broady and Robin Hodder of Cupertino, Jason and Juliet Hodder of Freemont and Kevin Hodder of San Francisco; brothers Jeff Hodder of Fair Oaks and John Hodder of Gig Harbor, Wash.; and one grandson.

A private service was held. A private cremation is planned with scattering of ashes at sea.

The family suggests memorial donations to National Jewish & Medical Research, 1400 Jackson St., Denver, C0 80206.

Margaret Selig, 93

ESCONDIDO - Margaret Selig, 93, died Saturday, April 22, 2000, at Lifecare Center in Escondido.

Born March 29, 1907, in Scotland, she lived in Escondido for 10 years. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Selig is survived by her daughters, Linda Wells of Escondido, Joan Posthuma of Woodland Hills, Margaret Batby of Masapequa, N.Y., and Patricia Gerardi of Las Vegas.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at Heritage Park Apartments recreation room in Escondido, with Chaplain Ryan Perkins officiating.

George Richards, 54

OCEANSIDE - George Richards, 54, died Monday, April 24, 2000, in Vista.

Born May 26, 1945, in American Samoa, he lived in Oceanside for 20 years. He was an orthodontist.

Mr. Richards is survived by his companion of 21 years, Dora Kelly of Oceanside; son Malo Richards of Oceanside; daughter Tuaga Ioane of Hawaii; stepdaughter Anna Kelly of Oceanside; five brothers; five sisters; and four grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 1, and Tuesday, May 2, at Eternal Hills Mortuary. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 3, at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Oceanside 2nd Ward. Interment will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Catalina Gonzales, 88

SOLANA BEACH - Catalina A. Gonzales, 88, died Monday, April 24, 2000, in La Jolla.

Born April 30, 1911, in Michoacan, Mexico, she lived in Solana Beach for 66 years. She was the owner of Tony's Jacal Mexican Restaurant.

Mrs. Gonzales is survived by her son, Tony Gonzales Jr.; daughters Lizz Gonzales, Teresa Gonzales and Gloria Aronson.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, April 26, at St. James Church in Solana Beach. A Mass was celebrated Thursday, April 27, and burial took place at El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego.

The family suggests memorial donations to MEGA, San Dieguito Boys & Girls Club, St. Leo's Catholic Church, St. James Mission Circle and Solana Beach Little League.

Vivian Halt, 85

SAN MARCOS - Vivian M. Halt, 85, died Monday, April 24, 2000, at a local convalescent home.

Born Dec. 17, 1914, in Chicago, she lived in San Marcos for 28 years. She worked in federal civil service as a details clerk for the Veteran's Administration Hospital for 31 years and was a member of St. Mark's Catholic Church in San Marcos and their Women's Guild.

Mrs. Halt was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin M. Halt, in 1978. She is survived by her sister, Bernice C. Maas of San Marcos.

A private cremation is planned with cremains to be scattered at sea.

Allen Brothers Mortuary, San Marcos Chapel, is handling arrangements.

Cora Owen, 90

ENCINITAS - Cora R. Owen, 90, died Sunday, April 23, 2000, at Torrey Pines Convalescent.

Born July 31, 1909, in Riverside, she lived in Encinitas for 55 years. She was a naval electronics lab administrative assistant for 25 years.

Mrs. Owen is survived by her nephews, Ralph Roblee of San Diego, Bruce Owen of San Marino and John Owen of Windsor, Colo.; niece Frances Freebury of Upper Lake; and numerous great-nephews and great-nieces.

Burial will take place at Olivewood cemetery in Riverside.

Patricia Walker, 68

FALLBROOK - Patricia M. Walker, 68, died Sunday, April 23, 2000, of an aneurysm, at Palomar Medical Center.

Born July 4, 1931, in Hollywood, she lived in Fallbrook for 27 years. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Walker is survived by her husband of 46 years, Virgil Walker of Fallbrook; son Matthew Walker of Fallbrook; daughters Pamela Sanchez of Murrieta and Wendy Beye of Fallbrook; stepdaughter Karen Johnson of Lake Havasu, Ariz.; and four grandchildren.

Visitation was held Thursday, April 27, at Stout Family Funeral Home in Temecula. A funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. today, April 28, at Fallbrook Presbyterian Church in Fallbrook. Burial will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Riverside National Cemetery, Staging Area 3.
