Helen Allen, 94
SAN MARCOS - Helen Dorothy Allen, 94, died Monday, April 17, 2000, at a local convalescent home.
Born Oct. 14, 1905, in Hudson, Wis., she lived in San Marcos for five years. She was a teacher for 10 years and a member of the California Retired Teachers Association.
Mrs. Allen was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Allen, in 1996. She is survived by her niece, Susan Check of San Marcos.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. A private cremation is planned with cremains to be scattered at sea.

Lawrence Darang, 83
OCEANSIDE - Lawrence Dace Darang, 83, died Monday, April 17, 2000, at his home.
Born Sept. 3, 1916, in Santa Maria Illocos Sur, Philippine Islands, he lived in Oceanside for three years. He was a welder for Chrysler Corp. for 17 years and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans 67 and American Legion 99, both in Florida.
Mr. Darang is survived by his wife, Crispina E. Darang of Oceanside; stepson Cris deOcampo of Manila, Philippines; stepdaughters Lyn Bushouse of San Juan Capistrano and Joy Juan of San Diego; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
No local service is planned. Burial will take place at Florida National cemetery in Bushnell, Fla.

James West, 75
ESCONDIDO - James Evan West Sr., 75, died Wednesday, April 12, 2000, of pulmonary fibrosis, at his home.
Born April 3, 1925, in San Diego, he lived in Escondido for 12 years. He was a television technician for 35 years before retiring in 1985. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Mr. West is survived by his wife of 53 years, Alverna West of Escondido; sons James West Jr. of El Cajon and Jerry West of Campo; daughter Joyce West of Escondido; grandchildren Pam, Penny, Jeremy, Jerry, Jesse, Justin and Sarah; and great-grandchildren Jennifer and Jocelynn.
A memorial service was held Monday, April 17, in Lakeside, with the Rev. John Shepard officiating. A private cremation was held.

Janet Phillips, 82
LAKE SAN MARCOS - Janet Potter Phillips, 82, died Thursday, April 20, 2000, at a local convalescent home.
Born Sept. 15, 1917, in Ames, Iowa, she lived at Lake San Marcos for 28 years. She was a homemaker for 59 years.
Mrs. Phillips is survived by her husband, Dr. William H. Phillips of Lake San Marcos; sons Robert Charles Phillips of Poway, William H. Phillips of Sunnyvale and James Michael Phillips of San Carlos; daughter Elizabeth Ann Phillips of Mountain View; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A private cremation is planned with cremains to be scattered at sea.

La Vange Batista, 73
CARLSBAD - La Vange Batista, 73, died Wednesday, April 19, 2000, at Scripps Encinitas Hospital.
Born Dec. 11, 1926, in Chickasha, Okla., she lived in Carlsbad for 44 years. She was a homemaker. She was also a Girl Scout leader, Brownie leader, Cub Scout leader, past president and lifetime member of the PTA, Job's Daughter's, Amaranth Eastern Star and a volunteer with March of Dimes. She was a member of Carlsbad Community Church where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the Ladies Union, Board of Deacons and the Mariners group.
Mrs. Batista is survived by her husband of 50 years, John J. Batista of Carlsbad; son John L. Batista of Carlsbad; daughters and sons-in-law Talia and Dave Frank of Helene, Mont., and Lynn and Helmut Batista-Bukoukal of Frankfort, Germany; grandchildren Christopher and Jacki Frank and Megan Frank, all of Helena and Jens and Timo Vykoukal of Germany; and great-grandson Corey Weber of Helena.
No service will be held. Her cremains will be scattered at sea.

Grace Bowman, 67
FALLBROOK - Grace Madeline Bowman, 67, died Sunday, April 23, 2000, in Fallbrook.
Born Dec. 26, 1932, in Staten Island, N.Y., she lived in Fallbrook for 33 years. She was a secretary for Fallbrook High School for 28 years and served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1952 to 1954, finishing as a corporal. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Fallbrook.
Mrs. Bowman is survived by her husband, Thomas F. Bowman of Fallbrook; sons Thomas Bowman Jr. of Texas, Arthur Bowman of Arkansas and Lawrence Bowman of Iowa; brother George Norton of New Jersey; sisters Helen Nerenberg, Mary Mangus, Joan Walters and Eileen Gugliucci, all of New York; and six grandchildren.
A private memorial Mass will be celebrated and a graveside service will be held at a later date at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.

VISTA - Harold Gaylord Cooper, 70, died Sunday, April 23, 2000, in Escondido.
Born May 25, 1929, in Los Angeles, he lived in Vista for 15 years. He was a self-employed mechanical engineer for 48 years.
Mr. Cooper is survived by his wife of 43 years, Margaret Cooper of Vista; daughters and sons-in-law Joann Lea and David Rader of Valencia, Jeri and Tom Talbott of Rancho Cucamonga and Julie Carrell-Incorvina and Nick Incorvina of Rancho Santa Margarita; sisters and brother-in-law Alice and Captain Robert Lage of San Marcos and Phyllis Carpenter of San Dimas; and grandchildren Kenneth Keith Carrell III of Rancho Santa Margarita and Emily Margaret Teaff of Valencia.

OCEANSIDE - Leon Dayag Sr., 87, died Saturday, April 22, 2000, in Oceanside.
Born July 22, 1912, in the Philippines, he lived in Oceanside for one year. He was a self-employed businessman.
Mr. Dayag was preceded in death by his wife, Bibiana Dayag, in 1998. He is survived by his sons, Leon Dayag Jr. and Job Dyag, both of Oceanside; daughters and sons-in-law Rebecca Dayag of Oceanside, Evangeline and Gerardo Telan of Portland, Ore., Ernesta and Jerry Runshaw of Pensacola, Fla., Leticia and Regelio Apostal, Lilieta and Moriano Tuppil, and Edna and Domingo Moring, all of the Philippines; brother Estifano Pagarigan Dayag of the Philippines; 18 grandchildren including Paul Raymond Runshaw and his wife Christina of Virginia Beach, Va., Norma Wangerin and her husband, Eric, of Portland, Vilma Prosser and her husband, Terance, and Donna Dayag, all of Oceanside; and 33 great-grandchildren.

FALLBROOK - Kumi Kumsoon Yamane, 57, died Thursday, April 20, 2000, in Fallbrook.
Born Aug. 15, 1942, in Korea, she lived in Fallbrook for 23 years. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1st Ward, in Fallbrook, and the LDS Relief Society.
Mrs. Yumane is survived by her husband, Steven M. Yamane of Fallbrook; mother Soonboon Kim of Korea; daughter Nadine Eisenkerch of Oceanside; brother Taewon Kim of Seattle; sisters Kumwha Park of Ontario and Kumsook Kim of Korea; and three grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 27, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Fallbrook. Burial will follow at Fallbrook Masonic Cemetery.

CARLSBAD - Hugh L. Hearne, 71, died Friday, April 21, 2000, at his home.
Born July 29, 1928, in Berkeley, he lived in Carlsbad for 11 years. He was an internal auditor for the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power for 30 years.
Mr. Hearne is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ellen M. Born April 26, 1913, in Salem, Mass., she lived in Escondido for 25 years.
Mrs. Mason was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Augustine John Mason, in 1983. She is survived by her sons, Arthur Mason of Escondido and Richard Mason of Cypress Island, Wash.; daughters Joan Daigle of Norton, Mass., and Elizabeth Tisevich of Hamilton, Mass.; sister Ruth Marsh of Westminster; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 26, at Hidden Valley Christian Church in Escondido.
Keith Clark, 38
FULLERTON - Keith Edward Clark, 38, died Friday, April 21, 2000, in Fullerton.
Born May 18, 1961, in Houston, he lived in Oceanside and Carlsbad for many years. He was a 1980 graduate of Oceanside High School and earned a bachelor of arts in psychology at UCSD in 1985, a master of arts in clinical psychology at Rosemead School of Psychology at Biola University in La Mirada in 1988 and psychiatric doctorate in clinical psychology at Biola University in 1991. He was a clinical psychologist at A Child's Life in Diamond Bar, specializing in children, adolescents, marriage and family.
Mr. Clark is survived by his wife, Michelle Clark of Fullerton; daughter Anna Elizabeth Clark of Fullerton; father George F. Clark of League City, Texas; mother and stepfather Mary Ellen and Herb Reagan of Carlsbad; brothers and sisters-in-law Steve and Judi Clark of Vista, Scott Clark and Eric and Joelle Clark; nephews and niece Hunter Clark of Vista and Bobbi-Rose and Ryan Clark of Rathdrum, Idaho; grandmothers Bess Clark of League City, Texas, and Mary Margaret Crow of Galveston, Texas.
A graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, at Loma Vista Memorial Park in Fullerton. A memorial service will follow at 7 p.m. at Vineyard Christian Fellowship in Anaheim.
