Agatha Brokenshire, 96

CARLSBAD - Agatha Louise Brokenshire, 96, died Tuesday, April 18, 2000, at Tri-City Medical Center.

Born April 12, 1904, in Brownstown, Jamaica, she lived in Carlsbad for 57 years. She was a teacher with the Carlsbad Unified School District for 25 years, a member of the California Teachers Association and a sponsor of Vagabond Tours.

Mrs. Brokenshire was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Roy Brokenshire, in 1982. She is survived by her son, Donald Brokenshire of Oceanside; daughter Shirley Wright of Carlsbad; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 22, at Eternal Hills Mortuary Chapel. A funeral service will follow at 1:30 p.m., with the Rev. Barry Jones officiating. Interment will take place following the service at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Ralph Bello, 47

CARLSBAD - Ralph J. Bello, 47, died Tuesday, April 18, 2000, at his home.

Born Aug. 14, 1952, n the Bronx, N.Y., he lived in Carlsbad for 18 years. He worked for the Carlsbad Unified School District.

Mr. Bello is survived by his sons, Billy Bello and Michael Bello; and their mother, Suzanne Evans.

A memorial service will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 22, at Pine Field on Harding Street in Carlsbad, with the Rev. Dan Grider officiating.

Donald Johnson, 73

LAKE ELSINORE - Donald Ralph Johnson, 73, died Wednesday, April 19, of heart failure at Park View Hospital in Riverside.

Born Feb. 8, 1927, in Milwaukee, he lived at Lake Elsinore for 12 years. He was a self-employed painter, retiring from Johnson Painting after 15 years. He earned a two-year degree at Whitefish Bay College and served in the U.S. Navy for four years. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his sister, Marlyn Sanger. He is survived by his sons, Scott Johnson and Jeff Johnson, both of San Clemente, and Jay Johnson of Muskegon, Mich.; daughters Lee Birchard and Tracy Johnson, both of Lake Elsinore; brother Robert Johnson of Milwaukee; and 11 grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today, April 21, at Pacific Family Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Fort Rosecrans National cemetery in Point Loma.

Janet Thomas, 86
ESCONDIDO - Janet Mae Thomas, 86, died Wednesday, April 19.

Born June 27, 1913, in Mifflin Township, Pa., she lived in Escondido for 13 years. She was a sales representative for Big Y Yardage in Montclair before retiring in 1975.

Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by her husband, Ivor K. Thomas. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ivor W. and Georgine Thomas of Valley Center; daughters Nancy Moore of Point Loma and Gladys Beckley of Calgary, Canada; brother Christopher Coulson of Pennsylvania; sister Minnie Booht of Pennsylvania; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. today, April 22, at Community Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Vogelsang officiating. A private family burial will take place at 1 p.m. Monday, May 1, at Queen's Park cemetery in Calgary.

Lloyd Johnson, 88

OCEANSIDE - Lloyd Earl Johnson, 88, died Wednesday, April 19, 2000, at his home in Oceanside.

Born Dec. 14, 1911, in Hayward, he lived in Oceanside for 30 years. He was a minister for the International Church of Foursquare Gospel for 67 years.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary I. Johnson.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 24, at Vista Assembly of God Church, with the Rev. Clare G. Rose officiating. A private cremation is planned.

Charles Conner, 58

ESCONDIDO - Charles Wesley Conner, 58, died Friday, April 14, 2000, of cancer, at Palomar Medical Center.

Born Dec. 2, 1941, at Palomar Medical Center, he lived in Escondido for 58 years. He was a truck driver before retiring and served in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Conner was preceded in death by his mother, Evelyn Beatrice Eldridge, in November 1996; his father, Charles Everett Conner, in July 1994; and his nephew, Don M. Martin Jr., in November 1992. He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Cindy Howell of Escondido; sons and daughter-in-law Jason Scott Conner and Steven A. Lindquist and his wife, Sue-Ellen Kitchen, all of Escondido; brother and sister-in-law Allen and Anita Conner of San Marcos; sister and brother-in-law Elaine and Bruce Barber of Escondido; and grandchildren Madison A. Lindquist and MaKenzey A. Lindquist.

A memorial service is pending. A private cremation is planned.

William Quinn, 72

ENCINITAS - William "Bill" H. Quinn, 72, died Thursday, April 20, 2000, at his home in Encinitas.

Born Oct. 8, 1927, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he lived in Encinitas for 30 years. He was past president of the Seniors Board in Encinitas and was voted Citizen of the Year by the Encinitas Town Council in 1988. He received the Congress of the United States, House of Representatives Lutz Award in 1995 for Distinguished Service to Seniors and an Outstanding Service award from Scripps Encinitas for his work in the rehabilitation community in 1997. He was Santa Claus for Encinitas Holiday Parade and at Target for more than 50 years.

Mr. Quinn is survived by his wife, Amy Quinn of Encinitas; son William Quinn of Quail Valley; daughters Virginia Rayne of Seal Beach, Kathleen Gray of Clifton, N.J., and Terri Lents of Vista; brother Frank Quinn of Indialantic, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday, April 23, at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Encinitas. A private cremation is planned.

The family suggests memorial donations to the American Heart Association, PO Box 3625 San Diego, CA 92163-1625.

Norman Thornhill, 72

ESCONDIDO - Norman Buell Thornhill, 72, died Tuesday, April 18, 2000, at his home.

Born May 25, 1927, in Belington, W.Va., he lived in Escondido for four years. He was a self-employed soils engineer for 50 years and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Mr. Thornhill is survived by his son, Barry Goss of Birmingham, Ala.; daughters Marsha Kane of Vista, Laura Thornhill of Escondido, Lisa Beck of Huntsville, Ala., and Bonnie Skeers of Seattle; brother Burl Thornhill of Hendersonville, N.C.; one sister; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 24, at Allen Brothers Mortuary, Vista Chapel, with the Rev. Paul Beck officiating. Burial will follow at 1:45 p.m. at Riverside National Cemetery.

The family suggests memorial donations to Tri-City Hospital Foundation for Cardiac Rehabilitation, 4002 Vista Way, Oceanside, CA 92056.

Ruth Thompson, 95

CARLSBAD - Ruth Ferbrache Thompson, 95, died Thursday, April 20, 2000, in Carlsbad.

Born April 12, 1905, in Springfield, Mo., he lived in Oceanside and Carlsbad for 58 years. She worked for Chic Shop, Tot to Teen, Meisner's and Gay's Dress Shop, retiring in 1968.

Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel "Dude" Thompson, in 1985; brothers Glen Ferbrache, Robert Ferbrache and Virgil "P'Nut" Ferbrache; and sisters Laura Murphy and Bonnie Wilson. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Norma and Lyle Peterson of Carlsbad; grandchildren Linda O'Rourke, Jerry Hatch and Monte Hatch; great-grandchildren Julie, Maureen, Leilani, Jerry III, Samantha, April, Dennis, Karen, Breanna, Jesse and Joey; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11:15 a.m. Monday, April 24, at Eternal Hills Mortuary. A graveside service will follow at 11:30 a.m., with the Rev. Kenneth Mitchell officiating.

Constance DeVries, 77

PORTLAND, Ore. - Constance "Connie" Oliver DeVries, 77, died Tuesday, April 18, 2000, of cancer.

Born Dec. 29, 1922, in Richmond, Va., she previously lived in Encinitas. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. DeVries is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Lydia and A.J. Westfall, Cherry and Norman Carl, Katie and Ron Imig, Paula and Ted Burrows and Jamey and Lynn Walker; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and stepchildren and stepgrandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 27, at Montavilla Baptist Church in Portland, (503) 255-0141, and again at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 29, at Pacific View Baptist Church in Encinitas. Her cremains will be interred at a private ceremony in El Dorado, Ark.

The family suggests memorial donations to the American Cancer Society, 12405 Rancho Bernardo Road, Suite 100, San Diego, CA 92128.

Elmer Dutchess, 86

LAKE SAN MARCOS - Elmer E. Dutchess Jr., 86, died Sunday, April 16, 2000, at Lake San Marcos.

Born Feb. 11, 1914, in Buffalo, N.Y., he lived at Lake San Marcos for seven years. He was a research scientist for Union Carbide.

Mr. Dutchess is survived by his sons, Jim Dutchess of El Segundo and Jack Dutchess of San Jacinto; daughter and son-in-law Barbara and Robert Swannie of Escondido; brother Leslie Dutchess of Angola, N.Y.; sister Marion Beicke of Buffalo; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 27, at Hope Wesleyen Church in Escondido. A private cremation is planned.

Carl Iserman, 79

ESCONDIDO - Carl L. Iserman, 79, died Saturday, April 15, 2000, of cancer, at his home.

Born Oct. 22, 1920, in Des Moines, Iowa, he lived in San Marcos for six years and in Escondido for 24 years. He was a business education teacher at Palomar Community College before retiring. He served in the U.S. military during World War II, attached to General McArthur's headquarters. He was vice-president of the Palomar College Retirees' Association in 1999 and was a member of the Escondido Library Foundation, Friends of the Escondido Library, Patio Playhouse Angels Auxiliary, Escondido Historical Society, American Legion J.B. Clark Post 149 and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a volunteer for OASIS and the California Center for the Arts, Escondido.

Mr. Iserman is survived by his wife of almost 37 years, Myra Iserman of Escondido; stepfather-in-law Howard Sigler of Escondido; brother and sister-in-law Arthur and Joanne Iserman of Mountain Home, Ark.; and stepsister Dorothy Vestal of Minneapolis.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 27, at Church of the Resurrection in Escondido, with the Rev. Charles Fuld officiating.

The family suggests memorial donations to the Palomar Foundation Performing Arts Fund, 1120 W. Mission Road, San Marcos, CA 92069; or Hidden Valley Community Concert Association, PO Box 1320, Escondido, CA 92025.

Barbara G. Sullivan, 60

ESCONDIDO - Barbara G. Sullivan, 60, died Friday, April 21, 2000, in Escondido.

A homemaker, she was born May 28, 1939, in Vista and lived in Escondido for 35 years.

Mrs. Kraft is survived by her husband of 40 years, William Sullivan; sons Kevin Sullivan of Escondido, Damian Sullivan of Escondido and Darin Sullivan of San Diego; daughters Shanna Sullivan of St. Paul, Minn., Aline Sullivan of San Diego, Katie Page of Escondido, and Staci Sullivan of Escondido; brother Gordon Crisman of Camas, Wash.; sister Katharine Tiderman of San Marcos; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 845 Chestnut St., Escondido. A private burial will be held at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Joyce Miller, 63
OCEANSIDE - Joyce Miller, 63, died Monday, April 17, 2000, at Valle Vista N.H. in Escondido.

Born Feb. 9, 1937, in New York City, she lived in Oceanside for 15 years. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Miller is survived by her daughters, Jacquie Six of Chesapeake, Va., and Marlene van Zyl of South Africa; sister Judith Shotz of Novato; and grandchildren Kimberlee Six, Aimee Six, Elise Six, Madison van Zyle and Joanne van Zyl.

A private family memorial service will be held. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Riverside cemetery in Saddle Brook, N.J.

Steven Mason, 39

ESCONDIDO - Steven Joseph Mason, 39, died Monday, April 17, 2000, in Los Angeles.

Born Aug. 12, 1960, in Los Angeles, he lived in Escondido for 15 years. He attended Grant Junior High in Escondido and was a member of Little League baseball and the youth at Emmanuel Faith Community Church in Escondido. He worked for Valley Tool & Machine in Pomona.

Mr. Mason was preceded in death by his mother, Sally Montague, in 1999. He is survived by his father, Henry J. Mason of Escondido; brothers Kenneth Mason of Escondido, Scot Mason, Paul Montague and David Montague, all of Los Angeles, and Jonathan Leigh of Long Beach; sisters Patricia Fortenberry and Sheri Peters, both of Alabama; and grandfather Earle Mason Sr. of Warwick, R.I.

A private family inurnment will be held at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Ethel Isebrands, 78
RANCHO BERNARDO - Ethel Frances Isebrands, 78, died Friday, April 14, 2000.

Born Aug. 7, 1921, in Buffalo, N.Y., she lived in Rancho Bernardo for 25 years. She was a homemaker for 50 years.

Mrs. Isebrands was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Arthur Benjamin Isebrands. She is survived by her sister, Florence K. Gray of Las Vegas; and several nephews and nieces.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 28, at Fort Rosecrans National cemetery in Point Loma.

Lynn Montgomery, 80

VISTA - Lynn Edwards Montgomery, 80, died Saturday, April 15, 2000, of cancer.

Born Feb. 10, 1920, in Pittsburgh, he lived in Vista for six years. He was a senior administrator for North American, Rocketdyne Division and served in the U.S. Naval Airforce at lieutenant commander during World War II. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Montgomery is survived by his son, Lynn Montgomery Jr. of Canoga Park and Thomas Martell of San Antonio, Texas; daughter Julie Montgomery of Canoga Park; brother and sister-in-law E. Martell and Ann Montgomery of Carlsbad; and sisters and brothers-in-law Joan and Robert Myers of Palm Desert, Sarah Jane and Craig Beaman of Longmont, Colo., and Patricia Vincent of Crestline.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, April 27, at Los Angeles National Cemetery.
