ESCONDIDO - Nellie Sylvia Harris, 80, died Friday, April 7, 2000, in Escondido.
Born March 2, 1920, in Kelowna, British Columbia, she lived in San Diego County for 33 years. She was an accountant for the civil service for 20 years before retiring.
Mrs. Harris is survived by her husband of 64 years, Jack Harris of Escondido; sons Stephen Harris of Maine, Ronald Harris of San Diego and Michael Harris of Hemet; daughter Marilyn Short of Arizona; sisters Delphine Abinger of Carson, Mabel Oliver of Long Beach and Georgia Jones of Tehachapi; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, at McLeod Mortuary, Escondido Chapel. A private cremation is planned with inurnment to take place at Fort Rosecrans National cemetery in Point Loma.

Katherine Stratton, 96
SAN MARCOS - Katherine Whitney Stratton, 96. died Friday, April 7, 2000, at her home.
Born Jan. 15, 1904, in New York City, she lived in San Marcos for four years. She was a homemaker. She graduated in 1925 from Smith College in Massachusetts and was a member of the Inverness Yacht Club and past president of the Inverness Garden Club.
Mrs. Stratton was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. James Malcolm Stratton. She is survived by her sons, James M. Stratton Jr. of Tahoe City and Dwight W. Stratton Sr. of Escondido; daughters Patty Katherine Stratton of L'Alfas, Spain, and Margo Whitney Peters of Port Richmond; brother Josiah Dwight of San Francisco; sister Polly Downes of Northridge; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A private family memorial service will be held in Tahoe City at a later date.

VISTA - John David Kelsay, 63, died Friday, April 7, 2000, in Fallbrook.
Born Oct. 8, 1936, in Anaheim, he lived in Vista for 39 years. He was a new car salesman for Crystal Chrysler and Bob Baker Auto and served in the Army National Guard. He was a member of Palomar Community Church.
Mr. Kelsay is survived by his wife, Kerri Kelsay of Vista; sons and daughter-in-law John Kelsay Jr. of Lakeport and Dr. Damon and Asha Kelsay of Indian Wells; stepson Ryan Barnard of San Francisco; daughters and son-in-law Lisa and Larry Escobedo of Santee, Shelly Kelsay of La Jolla, Nicole Kelsay of New York City and Kianna Kelsay and Samara Kelsay, both of Vista; brother Daniel Kelsay of Poway and Marshall Kelsay of Ramona; sister and brother-in-law Roslyn and Wayne Dozier of Fallbrook; and three grandchildren.

Born July 8, 1936, in Jacomba, she lived in Escondido for 18 years. She did janitorial work for the city of Ventura and worked for 3-M in Ventura. She was a member of Cathedral of the Valley Foursquare Church, participating in women's outreach and choir.
Mrs. Welton was preceded in death by her brothers, Joseph E. Darrow and Robert L. Karnes. She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Ivan Welton of Escondido; sons Warren Daniel Welton of Escondido and Michael Tracy Welton of Tucson, Ariz.; daughters Tina Marie Welston of Castaic and Robin J. Abraham Kelly and Bryce Kelly, both of Vista; stepdaughters Dawnell Robertson and Jeannie Diane Brockman, both of Bishop; brothers Henry Albert Darrow, Robert Lee Darrow and William Henry Darrow and Jimmy Dea Karnes and Michael Foster Karnes; sisters Kathy Ann Cabral and Elsa Platino; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

OCEANSIDE - William Carruthers, 73, died Wednesday, April 5, 2000, of congestive heart failure, at his home.
Born Nov. 12, 1926, in Glasgow, Scotland, he lived in Oceanside. He was director of engineering for NASA at Explosive Technology and the engineering manager for Archive Corporation before retiring, and served in the Gordon Highlanders & Royal Artillery in England.
Mr. Carruthers was preceded in death by his grandson, Harley Carruthers. He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Betty Carruthers of Oceanside; sons and daughters-in-law David and Laurie Carruthers and Ron and Duwanee Carruthers; daughters and sons-in-law Deborah Carruthers, Robin and Patrick Nangle and Joany and Joe Hernandez; brother John Carruthers; sister Margaret Carr; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Mrs. Medeiros was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Ralph Medeiros; and her brother, Edward Olson. COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho - Thelma N. Ryan-Urvan, 88, died Thursday, March 30, 2000, at her home.
Born Oct. 23, 1911, in Toledo, Ohio, she previously lived in Southern California, including Lake San Marcos. She was a secretary in several school offices and was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Coeur d'Alene.
Mrs. Ryan-Urvan was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Ryan, in 1979. She is survived by her husband, Arnold Urvan of Coeur d'Alene; son Rex Ryan of Laguna Beach; daughters Noreen Stemm of Kingston, Idaho, and Roxanne Ryan of Denver; 12 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

Born March 9, 1926, in Aspinwall, Pa., she lived in Murrieta for 10 years. She graduated from Aspinwall High School and earned a bachelor of science degree in home economics from Muskingum College. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Peters by the Sea Presbyterian Church in Palos Verdes. She was also a member of the Women's Golf Club at The Colony in Murrieta.
Mrs. Schultz is survived by her husband, Robert Schultz of Murrieta; sons James Schultz of Encinitas and Jeffrey Schultz and Scott Schultz, both of Park City, Utah; and three grandchildren.

RANCHO BERNARDO - Walter H. Niedermeier, 88, died Tuesday, April 4, 2000, from emphysema and complications of pneumonia.
Born Feb. 27, 1912, in Saginaw, Mich., he lived in Rancho Bernardo. He graduated from high school in Monroe, Mich., and earned an engineering degree from Michigan State University in 1935. He worked for Shell Oil Co. for 27 years before retiring and was a member of the Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church, serving on the board of deacons from 1975 to 1977. He was a member of the Rancho Bernardo Bowling League, the Oaks North Men's Golf Club, the Oaks North Lawn Bowling Club, the Oaks North Travel Club and the Rancho Bernardo Country Club.
Mr. Niedermeier is survived by his wife, Mary Belle Niedermeier; son and daughter-in-law Bert and Angela Niedermeier of Rancho Bernardo; daughter and son-in-law Gail and Rik Santanelli of Gunnison, Colo.; sister Kathryn Hendrickson of Ann Arbor, Mich.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
