George Mitchell, 68
VISTA - George W. Mitchell, 68, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, in Vista.
Born June 22, 1931, in Clarkson, Texas, he lived in Vista for 30 years. He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps after serving in Korea and Vietnam and worked for the North County Transit District for 17 years. He was a member of the Chosin Few.
Mr. Mitchell is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Mitchell of Vista; sons and daughters-in-law Timothy S. Mitchell of Escondido, David W. and Suzanne Mitchell of Carlsbad and R. John and Julie Mitchell of Mission Viejo; daughters and sons-in-law M. Dianne and Ramie T. LaBelle of Oceanside and Linda S. and Mathew Souza of Tigard, Ore.; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, at Eternal Hills Mortuary, with Chaplain David Plank officiating. A private inurnment will take place at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Orlena Walchel, 90
ESCONDIDO - Orlena Graves "Aunt Dee" Walchel, 90, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, in Escondido.
Born Nov. 21, 1909, in Milton, Okla., she lived in Escondido for 60 years. She was the owner of Knotty Pine Cafe in Escondido from 1939 to 1982.
Mrs. Walchel is survived by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Golda and Homer Gandy of Escondido and Betty and Manuel Noya of Bakersfield; five nephews; and two nieces.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Joseph Shepley, 84
VISTA - Joseph N. Shepley, 84, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, in Oceanside.
Born Jan. 27, 1915, in Ontario, Canada, he lived in Vista for two years. He worked for the Oceanside Unified School District and was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Oceanside and the North Coast United Methodist Church.
Mr. Shepley is survived by his wife of 60 years, Florence Shepley of Vista; sons Donald Shepley of San Jose, Tom Shepley of La Mesa, James Shepley of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Richard Shepley of La Quinta; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at North Coast United Methodist Church in Oceanside, with Richard Smith officiating.

VISTA - Ethel Sharp, 79, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, of cancer, at her home.
Born July 15, 1920, in Saugus, Mass., she lived in Vista for 40 years. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Sharp is survived by her husband of 54 years, Chuck Sharp of Vista; sons Charles Sharp and Bob Sharp, both of Valley Center; daughters Deborah Sharp and Cindy Peters, both of Vista, and Samantha Eckert of Ramona; grandchildren Michelle, Angella, Jeremy, Heather, Heidi, Sybil, Gared, Luke, Sabriana, Amanda, Alex, Adrianna, Kelly and Nick; and great-grandchildren Brittany, Kelsey, Cole, Alyssa, Monica, Kayla and Isaac.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 30, at Vista Masonic Lodge. A private cremation is planned with interment to take place at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 31, at Rosecrans National Cemetery, with Nick Hurst of Faith Lutheran Church officiating.

OCEANSIDE - Stella Parks Chestnutt, 45, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at Tri-City Medical Center.
Born Feb. 15, 1954, in Oceanside, she lived in Oceanside for 45 years. She graduated from Oceanside High School in 1972 and attended Mira Costa Community College. She worked for MWR at Camp Pendleton.
Mrs. Chestnutt was preceded in death by her mother, Hannah Parks, in 1988. She is survived by her husband, William Chestnutt; father Alfred Parks Sr. of Riverside; daughters and son-in-law Daude and Duane Hayes of Vista and Kimberly Chestnutt of Oceanside; brothers Alfred Parks Jr. and Henry Parks, both of Oceanside and Eddie Parks of Murrieta; sisters Agnes Branch of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Thelma Henderson of Oceanside; one grandson; three nephews; five nieces; one great-nephew; and two great-nieces.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at Oceanside Mortuary.

Samuel Winstead, 87
ESCONDIDO - Samuel M. Winstead Sr., 87, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, in Escondido.
Born July 20, 1912, in Roxboro, N.C., he lived in Escondido for 31 years. He was a contract negotiator for the U.S. Air Force for 33 years and served in the U.S. Navy from 1933 to 1937. He was a member of the Elk Lodge 1687 for 24 years and the Masonic Lodge 390.
Mr. Winstead is survived by his wife of seven years, Blanche Winstead of Escondido; sons Samuel Winstead Jr. of Hemet and Robert Winstead of Redding; daughters Anita Todd of Greenville, Texas, and Marilyn Stuno of Hemet; brothers William Winstead of Fallbrook, Richard Winstead of Raleigh, N.C., and McArthur Winstead of Greensboro, N.C.; sisters Dorothy Johnson of Newport News, Va., and Marion Bagot of Phoenix; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

VISTA - Katherine Crawford, 79, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, of flu and cancer, at Fallbrook Hospital.
Born March 23, 1921, in Tucumcari, N.M., she lived in Vista for 15 years. She was a personnel manager for the U.S. Air Force in Los Angeles before retiring.
Mrs. Crawford is survived by her husband of 35 years, James Crawford of Vista; brother Bill Lovelace; and sister and brother-in-law Zane and William Deatrick.
A private memorial service was held in Vista. Her cremains will be scattered at sea with those of her husband at his death.

Gilbert Trautman, 94
FALLBROOK - Gilbert William Trautman, 94, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, in Fallbrook.
Born March 17, 1905, in Fillmore County, Neb., he lived in Fallbrook for 22 years. He was the manager of Farmer's Co-Op Elevator for 35 years and was one the board of the Joslyn Senior Center.
Mr. Trautman was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Trautman, in 1982; and his daughter, Carmen Frazier, in 1988. He is survived by his son, Charles Trautman of Denver, Colo.; daughter Jane Crocker of Desert Hot Springs; sisters Eleanor Wiegman of Ashland, Ore., and Annita Sneddon of Sutton, Neb.; grandchildren Candice Kelly, Julie Price, Brandt Dixon, Kimberly Stits, Carol Replogle, Suzanne Holyde, Melinda Reaugh, Steven Trautman and Michelle Dutcher; and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at Berry-Bell & Hall Mortuary chapel, with the Rev. Antonye Holyde officiating. Interment will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Cypress.

Mrs. Sottile is survived by her husband of 64 years, Leonard Sottile of Oceanside; son John Sottile of Escondido; daughter Rita Mary Sparacino of Commach, N.Y.; sisters Grace McCann of Babylon, N.Y., and Rose Partman of Astoria, N.Y.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

SOLANA BEACH - Doril Neila Klies, 83, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2000.
Born Aug. 25, 1916, in Rockland, Maine, she lived in Solana Beach and Oceanside for 38 years. She was a homemaker and a member of the Solana Beach Presbyterian Church, Republican Women's Club, the National Poetry Society and the Navy Wives League.
Mrs. Klies was preceded in death by her husband, Karl D. Klies, on June 5, 1996; and her daughter, Katie Lou Doyle, on Dec. 22, 1996. She is survived by her son, Douglas Winston Small of Encinitas; daughters Elaine Brewster Small and Neila Ann Karoly, both of Oceanside, and Karen Lynn Parkes of Solana Beach; brothers Neil Robbins, Loren Robbins, Aldevera Robbins and Robie Robbins, all of Maine; sister Delia Starrett of Rockland, Maine; grandchildren Tamara Westgate, Douglas Small, Channing Small, Scott Ring, Shannon Ring-McGehee, Monique Eaton, Tyler Bloomingdale, Derek Zovanyi and Leila Stoddard; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Born Feb. 15, 1921, in Kentucky, he lived in Vista for 42 years. He worked for Lee Food Inc. before retiring.
Mr. Lee was preceded in death by his daughter, Jamie Lee, in 1981. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Louise Lee of Vista; daughters Linda Wells of Escondido and Suzane Gore of Yuma, Ariz.; brother Josiah Lee of Grants Pass, Ore.; and grandchildren Jeramy, Denise and Mathew.

Born June 23, 1917, in Everett, Wash., he lived in Carlsbad for 24 years. He was the owner of Mac Donalds Jewelers from 1954 to 1972 and a member of the American Legion, the Kiwanis Club, a registered jeweler, a member of the American Gem Society, a Yachtsman and an Eagle Scout.
Mr. Mac Donald is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Mac Donald of Carlsbad; brothers Robert W. Mac Donald of Washington and Eugene T. Mac Donald of Florida.
A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 28, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park. Interment will follow.

Louis Paul, 90
ESCONDIDO - Louis Paul, 90, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, in Escondido.
Born Oct. 23, 1909, in New York City, he lived in Escondido for 24 years. He was a mail clerk and supervisor for the U.S. Postal Service and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a chiropractor, an accountant and an author.
Mr. Paul is survived by his stepsons, Kenneth Jarvis of Escondido and Clifford Jarvis of Florida; stepdaughters Evelyn Boneck of Washington, Ethel McAmes of Florida and Edith Bell of Ramona; and numerous stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.
Visitation and viewing will be held at 8:15 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1917 E. Washington Avenue in Escondido. A funeral service will follow at 9 a.m. Burial will take place following the service at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles.

ESCONDIDO - Clarence C. Simpson, 94, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, in Escondido.
Born Jan. 18, 1905, in Missouri, he lived in Escondido for 15 years. He was a self-employed sanitation worker and a member of the Elks Lodge in Hawthorne for 10 years.
Mr. Simpson was preceded in death by his son, James P. Simpson. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Theresa Simpson; daughters Carol Zuiderweg of Escondido and Geri Carpenter of Moreno Valley; daughter-in-law Linda Stevens of Riverside; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
No service will be held at the request of the deceased. A private cremation is planned.
