Nina Cascioppo Zachry, 64
ESCONDIDO - Nina Cascioppo Zachry, 64, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 1999, at Sunbridge Nursing Home.

Born Oct. 10, 1935, in Escondido, she lived in the city all her life. In 1992, she retired from Escondido Physicians and Business Exchange. She was a well known ceramist and produced rabbits and walking ducks for Disneyland under the name of Ceramics by Nina.

Mrs. Zachry was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Zachry Sr., on May 28, 1997, and her mother, Jennie A. Einer, on April 18, 1999.

She is survived by son John R. Zachry Jr. of Vista; daughters Janeen R. Allen of Escondido and Gina A. King of Menifee; brother Jerry C. Cacioppo of Escondido; sisters Georgia Vanderheiden of Escondido, Frankie Cascioppo of Escondido and Tina Schneider of Keizer, Ore.; and grandchildren Jennie, Lacey, Aaron, Corie, Johnny III, Sky, Gabrielle and Dylan.

A memorial is planned for 10 a.m. Jan. 7, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Escondido, with the Rev. James Kennedy officiating. There will be a private scattering at sea.

The family suggest memorial donations to Pediatrics AIDS Foundation; 2950 31st St., Suite 125; Santa Monica, CA 90405.

Accu-Care Cremation Center is in charge of the arrangements.

Raymond Carr Smith, 91

ESCONDIDO - Raymond "Ray" Carr Smith, 91, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999.

Born April, 7, 1908, in Adrian, Mich., he was a resident of Escondido. He was a butcher for 41 years for Talone Packing Company and a member of the First United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his grandson, Robert Binder, and son-in-law Thomas Binder.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 69 years, Neva L. Smith, of Escondido; daughter Patricia A. Binder of Escondido; granddaughter Susan L. Binder of El Cerrito and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation is scheduled from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, at Alhiser Comer Mortuary. A graveside burial is planned for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

The family requests memorial donations to a charity of your choice.

Matthew Jason Cully, 16

PAUMA VALLEY - Matthew Jason Cully, 16, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999.

Born May 12, 1983, in Escondido, he was a resident of Valley Center for 16 years. He was a 10th grade student at Valley Center High School. He was a member of the Valley Center 4H for the past seven years. He played in the Valley Center High School Freshman soccer, baseball and football. He was a member of the Valley Center FFA and high school parliamentarian. He was in the Valley Center High School Agricultural Club.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Jay Cully, in 1993.

He is survived by his mother and father Kelly and Steven Cully of Valley Center; brothers Brian and Brandon Cully of Valley Center; grandparents Louise Kelly of Valley Center, Carol and Robert Parada of Valley Center, and Marilyn and Marvin Swetkovich of Highland; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation is scheduled at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, at St. Stephen's Church; 31020 Cole Grade Road, Valley Center. (760) 749-3324. A funeral will follow at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Ken Ingols officiating. Burial is scheduled at 2:30 p.m. at Valley Center Cemetery; 28953 Miller Road, Valley Center.

William J. 'Bill' Mackey, 74

VISTA - William J. "Bill" Mackey, 74, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at his home.

Born July 25, 1925, in Peoria, Ill., he lived in Vista for 35 years.

He was a retired U.S. Marine Corps Master Sergeant from 1942 to 1965, serving in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

He owned and operated Mackey Foam, now Star Foam, in Vista.

Mr. Mackey was a member of the Vista Optimist Club since 1966, and was president of the club from 1968 to 1969. He served as district lieutenant governor for two terms from 1969 to 1972. He was the first Optimist district governor from the North County area, for the California South District of Optimist International, and also served as the group's chief administrator. He was instrumental in the success of the Optimist golf tournaments and was an avid golfer for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Doree Mackey of Vista. The couple recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. He is also survived by his daughter Bonnie Mackey of San Marcos.

A memorial service is planned at 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, at the Optimist Club of Vista, 600 Optimist Way in Shadowridge in Vista.

Ronnie J. Brady, 54

VISTA - Ronnie J. Brady, 54, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at his home.

Born Dec. 15, 1945, in Pelzer, S.C., he lived in Vista for 16 years. He was a general manager for Carl Karcher Enterprises and did fund raising for local schools.

Mr. Brady is survived by his wife, Joan Brady, of Vista; son Charlie Brady of Vista; sister Marilyn Cox of S.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral and inurnment services are scheduled in St. Louis, Mo.

The family suggests memorial donations to: American Cancer Society; 12409 Rancho Bernardo; San Diego, CA 92128; or Elizabeth Hospice Inc.; 150 Crest, Escondido, CA 92027.

Violet Bangert, 73

MURRIETA - Violet Rita Bangert died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, of pneumonia at Beverly Manor Convalescent Hospital in Escondido. Born on Oct. 24, 1926, in Chicago, she lived in Murrieta for nine years. She was 73.

Mrs. Bangert was a homemaker for 53 years. She is survived by her husband William, who lives in Murrieta; son Tom of Illinois; daughters Pam of Illinois and Candice Williams of Murrieta; and four grandchildren.

Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at St. Martha's Catholic Parish, 37200 Whitewood Road. A graveside service will follow at Riverside National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to Vitas Hospice, 301 E. Vanderbilt Way, Suite 200, San Bernardino, CA 92408.

Fred Bender, 87,
RAMONA - Fred Bender, 87, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999 at his home.

Born May 9, 1912, in La Crosse, Kan., he lived in Ramona for 42 years. He worked for Ryan Aeronautical for several years and then worked in construction until his retirement.

Mr. Bender is survived by his wife of 56 years, Stella R. Bender of Ramona; daughter and son-in-law Sharon A. Bender and Larry W. Cooper of Clinton, Tenn.; brother Clarence Bender of La Mesa; sisters Irene Riddle of Santee, Esther Baroni of Vista, Marie Roberts of Buford, Texas, Hilda Marsh of Lakeside and Elsie Bender of San Diego; and many nieces and nephews.

Viewing is scheduled for 4 p.m. today, Jan. 3, with a funeral service at 5 p.m., at Neighborhood Baptist Church in Ramona. Private burial will take place at Greenwood Memorial Park in San Diego.

The family suggests memorial donations to the Neighborhood Baptist Church's benevolent fund.

Maria Martinez, 78

VALLEY CENTER - Maria Guadalupe Martinez, 78, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, in Poway.

Born Oct. 30, 1921, in San Pedro, Mexico, she was a Valley Center resident. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Mrs. Martinez was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, Jesus Martinez Sr. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jesus and Virginia Martinez of West Covina; daughter and son-in-law Maria and Gustavo Zepeda of Valley Center; grandchildren Irene Molina, Yolanda Larson, Olga Angiano, Patricia Navarro, Jessica Martinez, Jesus Martinez and Julio Martinez; and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary; rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan 5, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

John Singer, 75

RAMONA - John R. Singer, 75, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at his home.

Born Aug. 24, 1924, in Colorado Springs, Colo., he lived in Ramona for 27 years. He served in World War II as a Navy pilot, and owned Buckeye Chevrolet Agency in Ramona for 11 years. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and served as a 4-H sheep leader for many years. Mr. Singer was instrumental in the formation of the Ramona Food & Clothes Closet; he was twice named Citizen of the Year.

Mr. Singer is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marie Singer of Ramona; son John P. Singer of Ramona; daughters Deborah Lewallen of Ramona and Andrea Singer of San Diego; sisters Jean Singer of San Diego and Mary McCaw of Denver; and six grandchildren.

A vigil service is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church with Father Mike Sinor officiating.

TEMECULA - Hortencia Torres Papa, 64, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at home.

Born July 3, 1935, in El Paso, Texas, she was a Temecula resident. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Mark's Catholic Church in El Paso and St. Catherine's Catholic Parish in Temecula.

Mrs. Papa is survived by her husband, Louis Papa Jr. of El Paso; daughters Martha P. Alvarez of Cerritos and Pamela Papa Lopez of Temecula; sons Paul A. Papa of Los Angeles, Louis Papa III of Murrieta and Alfonso R. Papa of Perris; brother Louie Torres Sr. of Pomona; 27 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m. today, Jan. 3, at Stout Family Funeral Home; rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, at St. Catherine's Catholic Parish. Burial will take place at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, at Riverside National Cemetery.

David Easterbrooks, 79
OCEANSIDE - David S. Easterbrooks, 79, died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, of respiratory failure, at Tri-City Hospital.

Born Sept. 2, 1920, in Manchester, N.H., he lived in Oceanside for 30 years. He graduated from Grove City College in Pennsylvania and from Randolph Field Flight School in San Antonio, Texas. He was a flight instructor at West Point Military Academy and served as a P-38 pilot with the 14th fighter group during World War II, receiving a Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters and retiring in 1955 as a lieutenant colonel. He was vice president of sales for Germaine Monteil Cosmetics and executive vice president of Polly Bergen Cosmetics Co. He was also a member of the Roman Catholic Church.

Mr. Easterbrooks is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Marg Easterbrooks of Oceanside; sons and daughter-in-law David S. and Judy Easterbrooks of Carlsbad, and Bruce Easterbrooks of Telluride, Colo.; daughter and son-in-law Ellen E. and Robert Greenhut of New York City; and grandchildren Jennifer, Jeffrey, Caryn and Hakiem Greenhut, and Bradley, Allison and Mark Easterbrooks.

A graveside service was held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park, with the Rev. Kieffer officiating. Burial followed.

The family suggests memorial donations to Carlsbad High School Music Department, Attn: Scott Wright, 3557 Lancer Way, Carlsbad, CA 92008.

Royall Taylor, 87

VISTA - Royall Holloway Taylor, 87, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at Tri-City Medical Center.

Born Aug. 19, 1912, in Elbo, Saskatchewan, Canada, he lived in Vista for 27 years. He was a building contractor for 44 years and a member of Kiwanis Club of Vista, Vista Golden K, Vista Masonic Lodge No. 687 F&AM and Vista High-12

Mr. Taylor is survived by his wife of 34 years, Lorena M. Taylor of Vista; son Kenneth Richard Taylor of Del Mar; brother Paul Taylor of Canada; and sisters Heather Taylor Drobus of Oakland and Barbara Taylor of Incline Village.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, at Allen Brothers Mortuary, Vista Chapel, with Vista Masonic Lodge No. 687 F&AM officiating. A private cremation is planned.

VISTA - Gregory Richard West, 40, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, in Vista.

Born Oct. 17, 1959, in Superior, Wis., he lived in Vista. He worked for the Escondido Lumber Company and the Poplar Lumber Co. in Poplar, Wis. He graduated from Northwestern High School in Maple, Wis.

Mr. West was preceded in death by his father, Richard "Skip" West. He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Carol and Richard Palm of Lenexa, Kan.; grandmother Dorothy Sleva of Superior; sister Laura West of Hudson, Wis.; uncle and aunts Nick and Joyce West of El Cajon and Dorothy West Elkerton of La Mesa; and many other relatives in Wisconsin.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary.

Katharine Steele, 90

OCEANSIDE - Katharine Lillian Steele, 90, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, in San Marcos.

Born March 19, 1909, in Cambridge, Ohio, she lived in Oceanside for 26 years. She was a court transcriber before retiring.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park, with the Rev. David Plank officiating. Burial will follow.
