ZEH, EARL V. On Tuesday of last week the 14-year-old son of C. Zeh was kicked by a horse in the stomach presumably. The lad complained of some pain but not enough to lay him up or make him lose any time in his work. He performed his usual duties during the week and last Sunday complained of some paid but died before any medical aid could reach him or before it was realized that he was in serious danger. A coroner was summoned, and on examination it was found that the injury was in the groin and internal injuries had brought on his death. The funeral was held from the house Saturday, and the interment was in the IOOF Cemetery. The sympathy of the community is with the bereaved. |
ZUVER, JOSEPH L. Joseph L. Zuver passed from this life in Roseville, California, on December 24, 1926, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Alonzo J. Schwestka, on Sierra boulevard, at the age of 74 years. Mr. Zuver was born in Elkhart, Indiana, in 1852, and came to California via the Isthmus of Panama route when a lade of twelve years, locating in Sacramento. Soon after attaining his majority he engaged in business in Sacramento as a stock buyer, supplying several of the markets in that city. Traveling extensively through Northern California in pursuit of this occupation, he acquired an extensive acquaintanceship and won many friends who came to regard his a a man "whose word was a good as his bond" in all business transactions. He was a man of sound judgment and won recognition as one of the best authorities in the state in his line of business. He was united in marriage on September 15, 1874, with Miss Eva Florence Wooten of Linden, California, the marriage taking place in Oakland. Immediately after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Zuver established their home in Sacramento. Here were born their six children, Mila (Mrs. S. H. Woods) of Sacramento, Annette (Mrs. Carl Fox) of Roseville, Joseph Zuver, Jr., and Oren Zuver of Oakland; Merrill Zuver and Gladys (Mrs. Alonzo J. Schwestka) of Roseville, these with the bereaved wife, and three grandchildren, Mila, Merrill and Florence Schwestka, constituting what was until Mr. Zuver's passing away, the unbroken family chain. His passing is also mourned by five brothers and sisters, Colt, Alfred, Calla, Nettie and Viola Zuver of Crescent City, California. Mr. Zuver lived with his family in Sacramento for several years after his marriage, and before coming to Roseville to make his home about twenty years ago also lived in Chico and Rocklin. After leaving Sacramento he engaged in mining and was entrusted with a state system to the mining section in this and El Dorado county for several years. Locating a mining claim above Auburn and being of an intensely home-loving nature he erected there a commodious dwelling where he lived with his family for some years. Here, after moving with this family to Roseville, he spent his summers in developing his mine, and here he entertained many welcome visitors during the summer and fall months when the call of the mountains is so insistent. He early became an expert marksman and won many trophies, both in California and in eastern states. He was an ardent lover of nature and was a recognized authority on the habits of the denizens of he forest as well as on mining. He was an honorary member of the Forestry Gun club and continued his enthusiasm for fishing even at his advanced age. It was aa a home-maker that he revealed his kindly, generous heart, while neighborly solicitude won for him the esteem of all who knew him. Firm of conviction, resolute in purposes, he was a living exponent of the Golden Rule. Strong and active until three years ago, he continued in the pursuit of his business affairs until two weeks ago when he began to fail, the peaceful end of the long journey coming unexpectedly even to his loved ones. Funeral services for Mr. Zuver, with Rev. Thomas H. Mee officiating, were held on Sunday, at 2 o'clock p.m., in the chapel of Broyer & Magner. Interment was in the Roseville I. O. O. F. cemetery. The casket bearers were A. W. Greenway, S. F. Neely, F. E. Donham, C. M. Layton, M. Hurley and F. R. Brill. |
