Diary of John R. Walker


The following notes are taken from the diary of John R. Walker, who was the barber in Hopland, Mendocino County, between 1906 and his death in 1920.  He also had the telephone office in his home, had a laundry agency and was on several coroner's juries.

JANUARY

18- Big flood.  River up to track.

FEBRUARY

1 - Dick Williams quit Fosters.
3 - T.D. baby born. Willard sentenced. Frank Dooley bought store from Harvey.
6 - Willard and C. Pina row.
8 - Geo Harris left Thatchers.  Began teaching Mable to read in primer.
11 - Mrs. Frank Grant came home from operation
15 - Dropped shears on left foot.  Helen Sullivan blind.
19 - Jim Meyers shot Henry Willard about 6:10 PM
20 - DeMott arrested for hiding calf. $200 bond.
24 - Mendocino Co. Day at Cloverdale Citrus fair.
26 - Dr. Sullivan and Arthur went to San Francisco
28 - 10:10 PM Frank Duncan burned deck of cards. Pete McCain died in Santa Rosa.

MARCH

1 - Rochedale store and post office moved into Grant & Leake brick building.  Chas Leake and Jim Lowe Row.
2 - 8PM mail first distributed in new post office.  Miss Ames entertainment in G&L’s new hall.
3 - F&L Duncan went to Healdsburg
7 - Buried Coots Babcock.  Mrs. Gibson & Mary Daw sick.
8 - Armstrong told Frank to leave school children.
12 - Gene came to Hopland 8 PM. Vassar - Mable G. row.  First snow in Hopland in 1906 - 9:10 PM
14 - Kelsey brought petition against Banks & Vassar.
17 - Mrs. Hageman went south.
19 - About 5 PM Harry Miller died
20 - Van Harpe quit working for railroad. Teen’s side pains and hurts.
21 - Duce Vassar hit Pete Duarte. (Night) Giroud’s slaughter house burned.
22 - Mable and Zirl set fire to old carpets and rags in old shed.
23 - Tom Ryan, Gene’s friend eat at dinner (1st time)
26 - Slide in railroad tunnel. No evening mail
27 - No morning mail, only one mail each way.
28 - No morning mail, only one mail each way.
       Charles Myers quit Thatcher.  Commenced work on Gus Grant’s new house. Christina C. ice cream social. G&L Hall (none of us went) Bill Kelsey had Duce Vassar and Charlie Pina arrested (went after shotgun). Lew Banks took charge of Vassar House.
30 - AM Chas Pina acquitted. Hard times dance. (First dance Gene went to in Hopland,) rain very hard Saturday
31 - Talk of Keyser selling stage business to Jim Beck and Chas. Faught. (Rained very windy and cold).  Gene finished work for F. Dooley.  Received  $13.15.  Reported fight between Jim Myers and Irvine Buckman.  Painted Clendening and Duncan’s buggies during this month.

APRIL

1 - Gene went to city with $55.00. Eat dinner at Lew Banks (Vassar House) with Mr & Mrs. F.W. Dooley
2 - Registered
3 - Frank Dooley moved into new house above store. Report that Banks and Duce Vassar’s saloon license has been revoked.
4 - Corner Saloon Lew Banks took out license.  Duce not allowed to tend bar. Put safe in Bank of Hopland. Fixed Gene’s plumbing shop in shed.
5 - Shaved man from Rio Grande, Acquainted with the Hennie Lyding (sent affidavit to insurance company. Gene and Teen took up carpets to clean, painted dining room.
6 - Painted bedroom, Jack Thompson went to work for Banks.
9 - Clendenning went to Santa Cruz as delegate to Workmen convention.
10 - Dance for benefit of starving Japs.
12 - Sent to Tay for Gene’s first stock.  Played 500 at Harris’ “no one out”.
15 - Mrs. Willard & Willard’s sister row.
16 - Went to Santa Rosa, spent $25.35. First time ever rode in an automobile.
17 - Eyes blurred while shaving Geo Harris.
18 - 5:20 am - big earthquake. Painting Thatcher’s hotel during this week.  San Francisco, Santa Rosa, Sacramento and San Jose reported wrecked.  Reported 3000 to 7000 killed in SF. And 200 in Santa Rosa, No mail nor papers.
19 - Mrs. Tyndall, “Willard’s sister” found guilty and fined $15.  Reported San Francisco burning up, no mail nor papers on noon train.
20 - San Francisco still burning, reported from 24 to East Sts and from King to Vallejo and Franklin to water front. (East St.)  No news from anybody in the city nor San Mateo that is related to us. Tom Ryan, Gene’s friend went to the city with Mrs. Kelly.  Mrs. Dan Cronin and Nonive’s directions and addresses.  Reported in the paper that Mrs. G.A. Pecham and Mrs. Kate Gibson were dead. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Harris in Petaluma. Wrote to Kate Zimmer.
21 - Telegraphed Kate Zimmer. Received first letter from Norm after the fire, 10 PM
23 - Gene started for the city with his tools. 2:30 PM train.  Received two letters from Mary Kelly and one from Alma.  2 letters without stamps. Arthur Dooley came up on the 8 PM train with his  wife. (Rain) Citizens of Hopland concluded to take care of 50 city people.
24 - Reported Alexander had been discharged from Fosters. Cuth Mrs. Gray, Mrs Harris (500). Lady and 3 children came. No one came to help them.
25 - No noon mail nor papers. Mrs. Seavey came up. Shaved manager Grand Hotel, bar. 1st call after 5.
26- Selling tickets into city today (nice day) Alma came up to Hopland
28- Frank Sunderland came up from S.F.  Mail all right but no papers..

MAY

19 - We came back to Hopland 8 PM
20 - Mr. and Mrs. Clendennin went to city
21 - Mrs. Grey boarding at Clendennings. We brought Willie back with us on the 19th.  I have asthma very bad.  F. Sunderland & I talked about going into hog business. (Reported C. Cantrell has measles.)
23 - Tried to rent Tom Crawford’s ranch but find he intends to trade with Harry Shoemake. (I still have asthma). I shaved Copsovic.
25 - 1st baseball dance of ‘06. Rain all day 26th and 27th rain all day too.
28 - Frank Sunderland went to Ukiah. Gregory Harris better. Shaved cancer doctor
30 - Mrs. Crawford came to see me about borrowing $100.  She says VanEtten owes her $750.. Charlie Yates has measles.  Charley Davidson’s sister staying at Girouds.  Been there a week or so.  I have bad cold and asthma. Rawls from Boonville with sick horse.  Warren Dooley put in billiard table.
31 - Mrs. Seavey went home.  Irvine Buckman quit Farrance.  Frank & Lizzie Duncan went to Healdsburg “prizefight”

JUNE

1- Frank Sunderland went to work for Farrance. Gave Geo Harris first egg shampoo. Joe Harris came back from Cloverdale with money for Bank of Hopland.  1st dance at Benson’s.  Bert Morrison went to dance at Highland Springs.  Alma went to Benson’s dance.  Mrs. Buckman went with Will Shears.  Bank of Hopland opened for business. Talk of Maj Faught buying McKahon place.
2 - Hopland BB 9 went to Boonville.  Hired rig in Ukiah.
3 - Heavy rain, nice evening. Bett Morrison started for the coast
4 - First deposit in Hopland for me. $20.  Mr. Keyser went to the city. 2 PM.  J.E. Hood went to work at Healdsburg.  Frank & Lizzie Duncan came back from Healdsburg.
5 - Mrs. F.H. Grant’s 500 party.  Mumps. FM and Lottie Grant.  Drunken Indian at Henry Barkers.  Jim Grand working for Rochedale.
6 - Sharpened Col.Dan Burn’s safety razors.
7 - Went fishing with Jack Thompson.  Lost knife, saw “Chico” going south. Cutchall staying at Sam Duncans.
8 - Willie went to Ukiah with Farrance.
9- School picnic. Alma, Willie and Mable went.  Dance in hop kiln. Long Ranch. Dooly. Bill and Gene Vassar played.  Full. F. Grant out riding.
10 - Duce Vasar and Frank Faught talked about fight with Neilson. Philo, Hopland BB. Philo 5 Hopland 9.  1st time shooting blue rocks.  Cuth. And I went riding B&Wto Vassar’s, found knife again.  Stopped at Pieta and ate a few of Paul’s cherries.  Lew Banks, mumps.
11 - Billy Shears full. Frank Grant worse again.  Tyrril Barker came up from Fresno 8 PM.  Billy Vassar and Frank Asbell full.
12 - Frank Sunderland went back to S.F. “Rhody” from Fruitvale got shaved.
13 - Will Shear went to Tiberon. Shaved socialist doc. MD. Gus & Lottie and Mrs. Clendenen went to Ukiah.  Milt shears delivering meat.  Frank D. saw Lizzie buying.  Tom Farrance to take Will and Alma to hop fields, but went to the city on 6:11 train.
14 - T. Farrance came back from city. Report Gene Giroud and Cooper going to dissolve partnership. Heard of letter rec’d by Davidson’s sister.  Frank Grant got shaved, 1st time after mumps. (Parson’s girl married)
15 - Rain. Dance given by Lester Banks for BBC.  Miss Gibson of Ukiah hired to play for dance but Bill and Gene Vassar played (row in BBC) G. Giroud told me he had bought out Cooper.  Bought soda for Teen, Will and myself.
16 - Cooper at Boonville.
17 - Hopland BBC played Indian Unions. Hop - 7 Union - 1.  Jim Grant, Mrs. Buckman, Cuthbertson started for San Jose on his vacation 6:26 AM.
19 - Alma and Will working in hop fields.  Very warm 98. Shaved manager Marchand’s restaurant. Bo Bray.
20 - Will got $2.50 for hop work.  Cooler, windy.  Write to Clair and Nora. Building McGarvey’s hop house at Harringtons.  Jennings, contractor.  Launch came up for Soda Bay. Chatfields.
21 - Put up first raspberry and strawberry jelly this year. Drew my first check on Hopland Bank for $40 in favor of Bill Young. I sold Gene’s box of unions, etc. to Old Man Hewitt for $1.50.  Bert Thompson and C. Pina drunk.
24 - Frank Giroud, Gene Parrington baseball dance.  Susie Vassar. Alma & Willie went. $9.30 for the day.  Brass band went over to Lakeport.  Mr. F. Dooley and wife and Mrs. Farrance to supper. School kids beat Indian’s baseball.
25 - Went to river. Chriton, Donor, Willie, Alma & Mable. May Banks, Zirl Grant and Leana Buckman, mumps and measles. Harry Shoemake moved into Tom Crawford’s ranch which Shoemake bought.
26 - Taking Chatfield’s boat off the train.  Played 500 at Gus Grants. Burns’ wife horses went east for sale.  Bought stiletto knife. Shaved Charley Dunphy and haircut. Mrs. Thatcher’s bro came to Hopland 8 P.M.
27 - Started with Chatfield’s boat for Soda Bay at 5 AM.  Cloudy cool weather.  This month Tom Crawford traded his ranch for Harry Shoemake’s McMahon House.  Talk of Old Man Sierk taking Jim Babcock’s place at Peters.  Report Cuthbertson will lose school and Millington given his position.
28 - Shaved Mrs. Thatcher’s bro, “Roach”
29 - $2.35 for the day. Shaved Lahy Freman. Mrs. Grant, Mrs. Thatcher, Mrs. Harris, Lucas - Clendenings affair.  Report Bill Vassar got married today to Mable Graham. Henry Buckman came up to Hopland.
30 - Heard J. Thompson had been working at Largo for a week. Tererell - Old Man Barker and duce Vassar went north after sheep (very warm 98) Duce Vassar married.  Mr. Farrance, Teen, Mable and Alma rode to ranchari, skittish horse.  May Kelly (Babe) came to Hopland 8 PM.  BBC dance. I did not go.  Mr. Farrance fainted ($9.90 day) Harve told me Millington had rented his house N. side of church and that Millington had an application in Hopland Union School.  Charley Peters tending bar for Banks

JULY

1 - 1ST time saw them shooting blurocks ($6.40 day) Sent Dunphy’s razors back by Maj Faught. Very warm 100.  Drove Dooley’s double rig to BB ground.  Bill Kelsey looked at upstairs of our house with Thatcher.  Thatcher measured room for screen door.
2 - Very warm 102.  Gus Grant moved into his new house. (Mary, Mable, Teen, Alma, Will and myself on river, Teen sunburnt) Frank Duncan moved into the house Gus Grant vacated.  Tom Armstrong moved into Harry Shoemake’s.
3 - Took in $7.20.  Very warm. 100.  Mrs. Clendenen said we were running opposition to saloons.
4 - Very warm 112.  Celebration at Lakeport.  Alma went to Lakeport with F. Dooley returned morning of 5th with Farrance (Cooper overslept.)  $3.85 day Joe Jones in Hopland. Dance at Duncan Springs.
5 - Shaved Cuthbertson. Jo Hood delivered quake history of SF earthquake and fire $1.50.  Lester Jones went to San Mateo, Mr. Harris went to city.  Rod Parsons on the porch.  Mr. Hood and Cuthbertson spent the evening on the porch until 12 PM.
6 - Warren Dooley moving into Clough house where F. Duncan lived.  Will working for G. Grant.  Goodrich arrested for adultery named Arbuckle. Numbered library books with Cuthbertson - Hood.  Alma, May and Teen coffee after.  Painting Methodist Church South this month. Mrs.Buckman sick with mumps and measles.
7 - $9.85 day. Sold Kelsey’s whiskey at auction to pay Chinaman. BBC dance. All went Mable fell asleep on floor.  Alma buck and wing. Middleton living in Harvey’s house.  Took Frank Dooley and wife and Maudie to ice cream.
8 - Hopland BB vs Ukiah. Trouble with Alma. Mrs. Haris came back from SF.
9  - Trip to Ukiah, May Kelly, Harry Kelly, Alma,Teen Clair, Willie, Mable, Mrs. Farrance, kids went swimming in evening.  Bought black alpaca cat.  Met Albertson & DeMotte, Frank Nelson building new house.  Frank Dooley got billiard table from Cloverdale. Lester Banks supeoned me on Arbuckle case. Mrs. Frank Grant got mumps.
10 - Clare Dooley sick. Duce Vassar sick.  Arbuckle trial postponed until 7/11.
11 - Arbuckle acquited and rearrested.  Everybody but myself went down to river with Mrs. F. Dooley and Mrs. Han and Harry Huntington.  Pd poll tax.  Tom Babcock - Henry Willard fight.  Report Willard run his wife out of house.  Hauling hay into C & D’s barn Sam Duncan.)
12 - Coppell fixing up new meat market.  Willard arrested.
13 - Shaved Geo Louie of Redwood City. Harrington’s hop kiln dance.
14 - Arbuckle 2nd trial.  Fined $100, 50 days in jail,.
15 - San Brown in Hopland.  Hopland 16 Lakeport 5. Gilger ice cream in BB grounds 1st time.  1st game of billiards I played in Hopland.  Joe Alverez, Jack Hughes, Frank Dooley and myself.  Made ice cream and took it up to F. Dooley’s. Willard drunk.  Mr & Mrs Penrod and Mrs. Harry Huntington at Mrs. Joe Harris’
16 - May Kelly and Alma went home. Sam Brown went down on same trail. Willard up under $2,000 or 6 months.  Put up dubony jelly. School commenced.  Cuth, Miss Held and Miss Whipple (Tent from Farrance) Report McMahon notified to vacate old home. Mrs. F. Sierk teach in Cedar dist.  This school term Mrs. F.H. Grant teaching in McDowell Valley. Gen Warfield killed.
17 - Keyser hurt with bale of hay. Old Man Dooley fell off load of hay. Talk of Mrs. Henry Willard going away. Frank Scott and will Vassar Drunk.
 

19 - Paint Dooley’s house front and store. Banks and Bert Thompson went to city. Willard left town for good. Joe McMahon moved into Thompson’s house in Old Hopland.  Frank McCain came to Hopland. Jim Grant came back from trip west.  Talk with Dick Williams about fight with Gus Grant and Gene Giroud.
20 - Mrs. Willard gave up milk route. Henry Barker told me Edwards told Gene Giroud to draw on him if he needs money. Keyser’s son and daughter came to Hopland.
21 - Hubbell came back from East.  Primary held com & Rep in Hopland.  Jack Boyd move into the McMahon House.  Pete Duarte drunk BB dance, none of us went.  Frank & L. Duncan went to Ukiah.
22 - Ed Crawford and Chas Yates went to city to work 6:25 train. Clen. Thompson got back from city. Henry Babcock came back to Hopland. Jack Boyd talking to Mr. Sierk.
23  - Shave Keyser in bed 1st time.  10 AM.  Harrington ran away AM.  Young Jennings. Arthur Dooley went back to city.  Gave Jim Grant 1st order. Report Chas Cantrell’s death.
24 - Hot 108.  Bob Buckman hauling lumber to Boyd’s.  Heard I. Buckman was going to quit BB team.  Flossy Gibson measles.
25 - Henry Gibson moving into Peters house. Sold Vassar small Stutsman razor $2.00.
26 - Jules Sierk moving into Mrs. Allen’s house which Gibson vacated.  Dick Williams went to Ukiah in buggy with felon on thumb. Moving pictures. Lizzie Duncan got box by freight from U & L in Sacramento.
27 - Turtle man left Farrances. Will & Harry cleaning up warehouse for skating rink.  Bot box of peaches $1.15.  Old Man Sierk told me about Boyd and Jim Babcock.  A.W. Foster in town.  Tom Crawford went to city to work.  Jose Harris and wife and Teen and I at Gus Grants. Dance at Bensons same night.
28 - Dick Williams and Vic Myers felon. Putting up 1st teacher. Hop del at Fort Bragg Dem.  Mrs. Harris went to Petaluma. Thatchers putting up large tank. Dick Williams went to Healdsburg.  Rule Daw back from Cloverdale, arrested, drunk. Received two weeks laundry at one time.
27th or 28th - Mrs. Farrance went to Rio Vista
29 - Joe Harris went to city. Mr & Mrs. Harris returned to Hopland.  Jess Daw and Young Thompson hew hop bb.  Write to 5 chair shop in San Jose.
30 - Jess Daw fined $.05 for battery.  Shaved Keyser in bed 2nd time. Chas Cantrel went to see about his brother’s estate.  We have been thinking for some time about going to San Jose.  Write to Coleman exchange.  Teen and I and Mrs. Harris.
31 - Allen Cooper going to Humbolt fore cattle for Noonan of Santa Rosa.

AUGUST

1 - Mrs. “Clen” went to city.
2 - Rube David kid sick.  Grover Babcock’s friend in Morgan Hill.  Gus Grant killed calves and Gene Giraud wouldn’t buy them.  Owen Cox came to Hopland.
3 - Shaved Mr. Newsom, Christian minister in Joe Hood’s place 1st time.
5 - Renert man shot in Lake Co.  Mrs. Allenbest had a baby. Clendenen hit a man with a club. Chas. Cantrell got back from his bros ranch. Vic Meyers on crutches.
6 - Charley Myers baby buried. Orin Brooks sanity questioned. Mrs. Frank Grant’s father in town. Mr. Mosier.  Windy, cool. Venison from Frank Sierk.  
7 - Cloudy and cool. Shaved Dan Cox.
8 - Shaved Roundtree 1057 Cole St.  First night of skating. Hot.
9 - Dance in skating rink.  Hot.
10 - Watkins man in Hopland. Kid threatened to shoot Mrs. Baker. Gene Giroud and Dick Williams, Mr. Farrance with phonograph.  Fires in the different mountains.
11 - Orin Brooks in Christian Church.
12 - Clair went home to San Mateo with Lester Jones and Helen Seavey.  American Hop and Barley secretary, Parker, visiting Hopland at Farrance with young lady from relief committee.  Shaved Keysers’ son in law second time.
13 - Mrs. Gene Parr in Hopland.  Harry Overall trial held to appear before Superior Court.
15 - Teen and I at Mr. F. Dooley’s “Musi Willy”. Joe Harris came to Hopland. Willie and Harvey picking pears for Foster 1st day.
16 - Went over the hop ranch with Farrance “man asleep”. 1 ad in Call “shop for sale” Will and Harry Marcy quit picking pears at Fosters.
17 - Jack Boyd on crutches.  Jim Grant, Rod Duncan, Ralph Mills, Les Banks camping at Pepperwood spring.
18 - Recd letter from H.W. Denner about buying shop, ans 8/18, 1638 Eddy.
19 - Recd letter from B.M. Watson Monterey about buying shop, ans 8/20 AM
20 - F. Dooley running hop ranch store. Jake Richardson working for Coppell.  Cruz Billy ordered cup and brush.
21 - 2nd letter from Denner.  Two train loads of hop pickers arrived for Farrance.  Mrs. Hageman and son in Hopland. The constable in town for some time.
22 - Teen got two wrappers. San Brown to see me. Armstrong around with petition for John Saunders for night watchman for Hopland.  Began Picking hops at McGarvey.  Young man broke his neck at American Hop Ranch, swimming. Began picking hops at Farrance’s PM.
23 - Bert Harrison came back to Hopland.
24 - Eddy Kelly and Frank O’Brien came to Hopland at noon
25 - Frank O’Brien went to work for Gene Giroud.
30 - Jake rich deposited $20.00 on Hopland shop.

 1910

JANUARY

1- Cool all day. Teen, babies and I visited Grants, Gus and Lottie at Lizzie Duncans. Oliver Myers taken to Ukiah hospital.  Garrett Kidd sent to city 2 PM.
2 - Old Man Crawford very sick for some time.  Gus Grant and wife returned to city 2 PM.  Snowed 5 AM very cold. Oliver Myers reported better. Mrs. Hagerman visiting Mrs. Dooley.
3 - D.O. Mills died.  Tom Crawford in town. Hood’s nephew went to city.
4 - Thatcher sick.  Mart Smith went to city for a couple of weeks. Bot strop from tramp coon. Gen metal finish.
5 - Asthma every night. Heavy frost every night.  Mable poison oak.  Teeny baby sores on face for a couple of weeks past. (Cold 19 above) Old Lady Shoemake very sick. Mrs. Clen and Lizzie over, played 500.
6 - Cloudy, slight rain, not so cold, no frost.  Charlie Pina arrested fore killing deer out of season, by Lee Miller.
7 - Mr. Crawford, Mrs. Harris, Mrs. Shoemake, Joe Harris, Dorothy Duncan, Mable, colds and sick.  Mr. and Mrs. Farrance came back from their vacation. Jenny Duncan very sick.  Gus Grant reported very sick in San Francisco.
9 - Rain nearly all day. Mrs. T. in to supper.  Reported Pina pled guilty to killing deer $25 fine.
10 - School postponed a/c of sickness of Mrs. Williams.
11 - Very cold rain.
12 - Report Mrs. Hyder sold out Pieta to ________.  Mrs. Farrance made us a present of port. Learning bridge from Mrs. Clen.
13 - Rain all day wind.  F.W.D. nailed up fence gate. Gus Grant’s baby Bernice very sick in city.
14 - Rain and wind.
15 - Rain, Oliver Myer came home from hospital
16 - Cold, slight rain. Reported Bessie called CED out of Kidd’s last night.
17 - Tom Armstrong came home from hospital (broke leg 11-15-09).  Mable started school in Hopland. (Frost and cold.) Snow in hills and Peak. Mart Smith got back from Oakland vacation.
18 - Heavy frost, fog, AM.
19 - Train from city ½ hour late. Mrs. F. and lady friend, Mrs. Viner, Carl Dooley and UE Girl down from Ukiah.  Tom Farrance went to Santa Rosa. Bridge.  Duncans/ Mrs and I. Teen and Lizzie.  Gave $1.00 towards rent for Judge to Jim Myers.
20 - Cloudy all day. Slight rain. Sharpened shears (1st pair) for Mrs. Bronson. Party at Harvey’s, took in $.15.
21 - Slight rain.
22 - Rain all day slightly. Mrs. Hood very sick, sent for Dr. Sullivan 8 AM.  Mrs. Shoemake sitting up, better
23 - Mr. Hood taken to SF on 2 PM train to be operated on. Very heavy rain all day. $11.80 for week.
24 - Wrote to Review of Reviews, renewed subscription and sent for Bret Harte and autobiographies. Very cold, heavy snow in hills and mountains.
25 - Very cold, hills covered with snow.  Bridge and 500 Mr & Mrs. Duncan., Teen and I. Mrs. F’s friend went home.
26 - Teen and Mrs. F. Duarte & L. Sierks, sun afternoon cold. Lee - Ray & Miller game wardens in town.  Frank Grant and wife in town.  Mrs. Huntington (Harris) in town. DelFungo behind in paying wages, everybody kicking.
27 - Mrs. Sullivan recd postal from the Dr. saying they had removed Mr. Hood’s left kidney. She came in to tell Teen.  Dr. Sullivan came home from city. Sunny nice day. 3 - Very cold morning.  Arthur Sullivan went to work at Fulton
5 - Duce swore off.  1st nickel dance (Italian). Bill Benson left Hopland. Card party at Clens. 500 very nice day.
6 - Mrs. Harris very sick.  Dr. Ray. Rain very hard aft & evening.  Mrs. F. & Tom went to city. $13.75 for week.  Jack Myers ways DelFungo is all right. (Razors working very good.)

Mrs. Clendenning’s sister on visit to Lizzie Duncan on Honeymoon.  Report that there is a petition at Thatcher’s store to close up the saloons of Hopland.
2- Joe Harris took out Clendenning’s telephone sometime this week.  Blacksmith opened Peter’s blacksmith shop. (Montz)
3 - Mrs. Wilie looking for Lew Banks. Teen took her over. Sent for sample of American No. From Scientific American.  Recd $15 ch from F.M. Rec. Sunnyvale.  Wrote to Deckelman about $1. overcharge. Wrote to W.H Applegate about mining stock.  Wrote to Clarkson Book Broker, Clarkson building, Chicago. Teen, Lizzie, Sam, Mrs. Thatcher 500 at Thatcher’s.  During this month fixing gas plant for the depot.  The “Avia Treatment” lady in town.
4 - Bags-sacks-bottle man arrested on warrant from Ukiah.  Constable Murray living in Knowles’ house.  W. Mottt, Keyser’s friend stopping at Thatcher’s.  She wed Henry Buckman. A great deal of agitation about closing saloons.
5 - Parr-Goodman lawsuit before Judge Huntley. 500 club at Mrs. Sam Duncan’s.  Lizzie took Teen in surrey. Jim Myers drunk. Lou Banks called Chas Pina down.
6 - Clendenning took man not expected to live over to Lakeport. Shaved “Pool” Lakeport barber. Frank Dooley’s wife, Lou Lowry and Lizzie Duncan went riding.  Copsovic called Lakeport on the tel, but could not get Pieta 8:30 PM. Mrs. Harris out riding.  Mrs. Farrance came home 7;20 PM from city

8 - Henry Buckman went home to Visalia. Fixed up other room for shop, laid linoleum.  Frank Dooley’s baby Wayne very sick, Dr. Sullivan. Still have asthma. Haven’t missed a night since I came back to Hopland.

10 - Harry Shoemake took party of six over to Lakeport for Chen & Duncan. Dick Johnson’s daughter, Mrs. Bartlett and Green and Lady over from Lakeport with Johnny Manning. Teen and baby out to Farrance’s all day. Wholesale hat drummer in town.  G. Kidd and CED bot straw hats.  Mrs. Willy arrested with man for beating Old Man Willy. Mrs. W. in jug all night.  Old Geo Stevens in the county hospital.
11 - Wrote to Call in reference to insanity.  Mrs. Huntington came to Harris.  Mrs. Harris very bad. - given opiates.  Had Dr. Sullivan 12 o’clock.  CE & Bessie Duncan 500.
12 - Helen Sullivan’s birthday. Pulver cut my hair 2nd time. Either today or yesterday Dr. Burke of Burke’s Sanatarium of Santa Rosa came up to Mrs. Harris.  500 club at Dooleys.  Dr. Stine arrested for non-support of children.

22 - Paid Lew Banks for lamps. Rain all day. Wrote to J.B. Waugh about Dooley’s overcharge.  3rd letter. 500 old shop.
23 - Mrs. Clen 500.  Ladies Aid Day (too much 500 no meeting). Lawson temperance lecture. Old man on horse back looking for livery man. I sent him up on the hill for Clendenning.
24 - Registered by Dick Williams. 500 , 6 handed in old shop. Mrs. C. called away.  Myrtle Armstrong came home with measles.  2nd time cut Bob Foster’s hair, no shave.

29 - Jim Myers told me about Beattie, Buckman and Al-Tom Farrance circulating petition in favor of saloons.  500 and bridge.
30 - Dorothy Duncan’s birthday. Staggs-Thatcher fight. Mr. F. Ukiah.  Auto passed through Hopland 12 noon.

APRIL

1 - Marie Bailhache birthday party, 6 years old. Ed Kidd’s wife at Thatchers. Cut Nick Andrew’s hair. Came up to go to funeral of cousin that was killed by auto in Santa Rosa.  Report Staage Miller leg broke. Elma Daw began working for Frank Dooley. Frank Duncan, Ed Kidd trout fishing.
2 - Report that Kidd’s Hopvine Saloon was robbed during night of $7.50, leaving $1.50 in till.  Kidd caught man at Pieta, he having stopped at Hoods. Andres’s boys funeral. Mrs. Joe Harris brot home from Ukiah Hospital. 500 at Thatchers. This week Thatcher put in gasolene system lamps.
3 - Nice cool day. We went over to Smith’s at Fosters.. Went thru Foster’s stables, played 500 on the grass. Jim Vining staying with Tom Farrance.
4 - Thatcher began digging hole for new toilet next to wood shed.  Frank Nederost digger.  Mrs. Harvey died. Moved old toilet to new place. Mrs. Harris downtown in wheelchair. Charley Gilger sold ranch to Pardee. Teen got bicycle from Mrs. Vining.
5 - Mrs. Harvey’s funeral services at the house. Teen went to Largo with Tom & Mrs. F. Jim Vining & Mable, Teeny. Wayne Dooley sick again.  Pulver tearing down Oliver Meyer’s old saloon. Several gasolene lamp systems put in the last week. Jim M. told me Clendenning knew he was going to lose the stable. This week Dooley girls horesebacking coming from school.
6 - Marvin Dooley brot wood. Borrowed $40.00 from Hopland bank. Mable fell off from Clendenning’s horse and broke her arm and dislocated her shoulder blade. We had it set by Dr. Sullivan with Dr. Staggs giving chloroform and Mrs. Morrill nurse. WCTU woman stopping at Clendennings. Free buggies for her & Mr. Allen.
7 - Leo Johnson discharged and Joe Berryhill quit the Hop and Barley. Talk of Lew Banks going to run Dooley’s saloon and ice cream parlor this summer.  Garrett Kidd took man who robbed his saloon to San Quinten.
8 - Dr. Sullivan very sick.  Mable sitting in front room. Shaved man going to buy Leek’s shop, he was thrown out of his rig by two runaway colts.  Mable’s arm out of joint again, put back into place by Dr. Sullivan and Mrs. Morrill. WCTU woman spoke in Christian Church
9 - Mable resting easily. 500 Mrs. Farrances. Mrs. Hood insulted.  WCTU woman speaking in street, PM
10 - Shaved Mrs. Mart Smith’s cousin. 500 crowd were going on picnic but rained hard all day. Mable resting easy.  Report DelFungo arrested for trying to swindle some woman out of $2,000.
11 - 500 club fixing up stables for Wed nites card party. Don’t know where to have party. Army & Navy magazine man with all the names of cards with some government proposition.  Very lame back, pain all night. 500 in our sitting room, old shop.  Dr. Sullivan said Mable’s bill would be $20.  Teen read in Call where kid we saw drive thru town last week was runaway from orphanage in Ukiah. 12 - Very sore around kidneys, back. Women cleaned up Dooley’s old saloon for card party Wed night. Mrs. Hagerman expected but did not come. Lew Banks drunk.  Banks and Duce Vassar families went fishing.
13 - Jack Hughes and Elma doing work for TWD.  Frank Dooley began building on extra 8 feet in alley to enlarge candy and ice cream parlor.  500 club in Dooley’s saloon. Sent item to Geyserville paper about card party thru Morrel.
15 - Olive Meyers very sick again.  Mrs. Harris up and around.
17 - Dick Williams wife had baby. Very warm.  Lizzie D. and Lew Lowry went to Pieta get CD & wife and GWK ;and wife.
18 - Clendenning and Duncan sold livery stable to Bud Beattie.  Mrs. Merril very sick. Oliver Meyers in town. Clendenning told me he was going to start an ice cream and bakery.
19 - 500 at Mrs. C. Bud Beattie took charge of stable. Clen working for Beattie.  Heard Beattie’s mother was going to take Vassar house. Banks going to live back of Dooley’s ice cream parlor.
20 - Joe Harris went to Santa Rosa.  500 at Mrs. C. Mrs. Hood promised us butter for her mail. Cleaned away grass from in front of shop and house. Mr. Keyser gone away. Has been away a few days.
21 - Mark Twain died.  Mrs. Harris taking a walk every day. Weather warm.
22 - Gentlemen entertained ladies in Dooley’s club room.  Mrs. Fowler, who has had laundry fore a few months wants me to act as agent.
23 - Dance by E. Leake and E. Daw and others.  Teen went until 10:30 I couldn’t go on account of work
24 - Picnic at Pieta. 500 club.  Walked to tunnel and to Pieta Creek Bridge. 1st picnic of season.
25 - Hood sent to Ukiah. Mrs. Hood called us up to get him but it was too late.
26 - Mrs. Fowler getting so much laundry that I am thinking of quitting Ukiah’s laundry.  Recd $10. From Hurd and paid it right back to Mr. View Bank.
27 - Confirmation in the Catholic Church.  Turkey dinner at thatcher’s for bishop.  Mr. and Mrs. Farrance, Mr. & Mrs. F.W. Dooley, Mr. & Mrs. Bob Buckman. Teen not invited.  Nearly everybody went up to the church.  Mrs. F. Tea, Windy cold all day.  Dr. Sullivan very sick in SF.  Mrs. Sullivan went to him.

29 - Public school entertainment. Mable, Forget-me-not.  Prof Jesse Williams bro on visit to Hopland. Teen heard that May Banks was not going to run Dooley’s ice cream parlor. 2 - Supervisors postponed “prohi” vote for Hopland.  OM Vassar and Jim Myers full also Beattie’s bro in law.
3 - Wrote to Clair and Will. Broke ax handle.  Teen sick all last night.  Beaver and box opener, piece of steel. 500 Mrs. Thatchers. Lou Lowry’s farewell party. Shaved Joe Caffney. Supervisors in Hopland looking at river bridge.  Frank, rheumatism in knee.. Brydon girl working for FW Dooley in Lou Lowry’s place. Paul Beach moved his family out of Hopland.
4 - Lou and Jim Lowry went home to Humbolt Co. Teen very sick with ptomaine poison. (Beans) Mrs. C baked bread for us. 5 - King Edward VII of England died.  Armsmans at Hop & Barley ranch. 500 at home.  Put heavy spiral spring on screen door in kitchen. Lakeport co. sheriff killed between 8 and 9 PM by Indian.
6 - Caught Indians that killed sheriff of Lake county. Nice day. Miss Smith, trained nurse, Mrs. Morrill’s sister, went away.  Shaved Bell, cousin to telephone Bell.  Make toilet hole for Teeny. Jim hotell says he has got $90 job in Bakersfield.
7 - Dooley opened ice cream parlor. Excursion to rose Carnival, Santa Rosa, none of us went. Report that sixty RR tickets were sold.
9 - 3:30 AM CED and Bessie and Bud Beattie looking for comet. 500 at J.E. Williams 1st time. Willhites moved from Joslyn’s to Knowles Hall. Told M. Smith to pay my share of Gent’s entertainment. ($.85).  C. Cantrel asked us about Sullivan moving back from city. Said he wanted to sell the house for his mother.

11 - Saw Halley’s Comet first time.  Report that Jack Mentz, blacksmith, went to San Francisco Monday 5/9 and has not been heard from up top today.  I was also told that he drank very heavily, his wife badly worried. 500 at home.  J.D. Allen returned from revival meetings at San Jose.
12 - Jack Mentz’s wife taken home by her father. J. Clendenning went to Ukiah, I think with money to put in bank.  Noticed that Mrs. C. never posts any letters in the post office here.

24 - Harry Barker in town.  Joe Harris says Tom Farrance’s father was dead.  Teen telephone to Joe - Pat says both twins dead, buried today 1 O’clock.  Dick Williams’ mother at Dick’s. Sheilda girl working for T. Dooley.. Lottie Grant came up on the 7:30 with her, folks did not know she was coming.   Dr. Ray took Mrs. Fowler to Banks restaurant.
25 - Mrs. Warren Dooley came to Hopland of 7:39. Mrs. Fowler died 4 AM.  Report Fowler had smashup.  No asthma for 3 or 4 nights past. Teen sent shoes to Jo.
26 - Mrs. Smith sent for Lottie Grant for ice cream and left Teen sitting on porch. 6 PM. Teeny baby sick quite a fever. Mrs. Fowler’s funeral. Buried in Hopland Cemetery.  Quite windy and cool.  Gus Grant came to Hopland on 7:38.

1 - Lottie Grant went home to San Francisco. Edith Thatcher at the hotel since Monday or Tuesday. New waiters at Thatcher’s Hotel from Oakland, dressed all in white. Kit Babcock’s funeral.  Mrs. Farrance’s niece, Miss Downie, came up to stay with her.  Windy, nice and cool.  Sent Roosevelt ans. To Colliers. Took Hewitt’s gas lamp to fix. 500 at home.
3 - This week, Thur or Fri, began taking milk regular from Murray, pay $.05 every night.  Shaved Geo. Jewell, Mrs. Hood’s son. Col Dan Burns came up to Hopland last evening in a big auto. Shaved him today.  Wrote to Clair.
4 - Shaved John Keough, musician, Bill Young’s friend.  Wrote to Will. Teen entertained the 500 club. Henry Buckman came to Hopland.  Report Joe Harris is in partnership with Beattie in the livery stable.  Mrs. Harris enciente.
5 - Runaway black team. Jim Cox and Harvey Shoemake went back with it. Sent for Dr. for Mrs. F.  Mrs. Thatcher came home from Yosemite. Clifford Myer’s leg still bad. Broken auto being fixed in Beaver’s blacksmith shop. Couldn’t fix it so the people went to Duncan Springs. Dance last night at Giraud’s. 15 - Very sultry, cloudy and warm.  Frank Dooley papering and painting new saloon.  Mrs. Thatcher’s daughter, Blanche, came to Hopland on 12 noon train. Purrington still hauling hay for Beattie.  Arthur Sullivan came to Hopland either today or yesterday.
16 - Columbia Park Boys in Hopland. Brooks promised me fence wire. Went to the stores to get their prices on bill of goods. Columbia Boy’s show, Mable went. OM Buckman reported dying.
17 - Shaved Jack Mentz at home, 1st time, rheumatism. OM Hiatt died today 20 minutes to 12.  Mrs. Jim Bailhache and Mrs. Henry Gibson very sick. Sent fro Dr. Grant at night. Temperance lecture, very small audience.  Report telephone for Jim Clendenning and Joe Harris wouldn’t send for him. Last day of school.  Gov Gellett called off big fight between Jeffers and Johnson. Thatcher gone to his mine.
18 - Roosevelt came back from African trip.
19 - Mrs. Old Lady Harrington and LaFranki very sick.  Mrs. Bailhache well and at church,. Mr. Hiatt’s funeral.  Teen went with Farrances.  Mrs. F.W. Dooley went to Gilroy to visit her mother. OM Buckman died this morning.
20 - OM Buckman’s funeral. About this time there is a great deal of sickness in Hopland and no doctor in the town.  Teen told Mrs. C. and Lizzie about Mrs. F., whiskey, etc.  Teen took coffee to the priest.  500 at home.
21 - Very windy and cool. Mrs. F. took Lizzie to Ukiah.  Sent my watch with Lizzie to have a new crystal put on it.  Henry Buckman in Hopland.  Thatcher had Tom Armstrong to put new leather washers on our pump.  It works now without priming.  Mrs. Bailhache went to Cloverdale 3:30 and back on the 7:38.  Lizzie had a crystal put on my watch and the cover spring fixed for $.10.  Teen had her ring fixed $1.50.
22 - Trouble over Dorothy Duncan and Mable Teens “tricks” party to Blanche Thatcher.
23 - DelFungo arrested by Constable Murray. Shaved DelFungo 1st time.  G. Kidd showed me a petition for only 4 saloons in Hopland.  Shaved Risdon ironworks man, Army and Navy Parlor.  Teeny Baby very sick, cold, earache and fever.  Mrs. Stevens of Pieta having with Paul Margolotti tel for G. Kidd to come to Pieta.  Joe Harris says this bank is on a paying basis.
24 - Mrs. Thatcher’s two daughters and sister at hotel.  Mrs. T.’s sister left purse on train. Lost $8,500... Stout brot purse up from Pieta.  Temperance lecture by Lawson. Lamp fell at Thatcher’s hotel. Edith T. reported hand burned.  Socialist talk with Frank Martin.  Gene Parr began hauling hay into Beattie’s barn.  Shaved Jack Mentz 2nd time at home.  Teen changed our bedroom into old dining room.
25 - Wet and dry election. Took Lakeport Indians that killed the sheriff to San Quentin, one for 25 years and one to be hanged.  Hopland went wet by 95 to 49. I voted for license.  500 at home. Mrs. Brook’s clothes cleaned, kick about raincoat. Henry Crawford died at Largo about 6 PM today. Cruz Billy arrested for drunk and breaking up Indian dance.  Fined $15. Very cool, windy weather these days and nights.
26 - Jim Myers went to SM to see father. Lew Banks - Staggs fight. Old Sam Myers reported dying in San Mateo. Shaved T.J. Weldon on Ukiah.
27 - Mrs. Thatcher went south on 6:48 train. Report row between Eb and OM Tthatcher.  Doc Staggs paid fine of $10.  Lew Banks stood jury trial. Mrs. Farrance came back from Skaggs Springs full. Talk of the 500 bunch.  Elma Daw refuses to speak to me for some unknown reason. Uly Jones and son in town.
28 - Lew Banks acquitted for disturbing the peace.  Runaway double team from depot. Arthur Dooley and peddler.  Mrs. Clendenning in charge of Thatcher’s Hotel until Mrs. T. returns. Killed “Old Rusty Cat:” and buried him under the oak on the church hill.
29 - Exchanged Thomas kitchen set, knives for ‘fake African Roosevelt” book with Bis-Des solicitor.
Book to be delivered in August (4/6/11, never received book. ) Sam Myers brot it up from San Mateo by Charley. Jim Myers came back yesterday. Ed Kidd reported from Nevada fired on a/c of Mrs. Clen.
30 - Quite a lot of talk because Sam Myers was left overnight in Knowles Hall. Sam buried today. Teen went with Eb Thatcher and Lizzie to the funeral. Mart Smith and wife reported to have quit Fosters to leave on the 13th of June.  Bailhache’s also going away. Talk about Frank Dooley and May B. Ed Kidd came back on 7:30 train

1 - Mrs. Thatcher came home on 11:48 train.  Shaved Carl Dooley. Figone veg put up in Beattie’s stable and eat at Banks for first time since Thatcher started hotel business.  Pump went dry again. Teen says Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Bailhache, Mrs. Clendenning and Lizzie Duncan are going to leave Hopland.  Teen put up 5 qts blackberries and 5 glasses jelly.

2 - Tom Farrance went to San Francisco on 3:32 train intending to go to Jeffery-Johnson fight at Reno.  Very windy and cold afternoon.  I refused to cut big fat Indian’s hair.  Jack Mentz HC&S in shop. Right hand still very badly swollen. 500 club at Mrs. Clendennings.  Mrs. F. didn’t go to 500 club, she drove back home after Tom took train.  Mrs. F.W. Dooley came back from Gilroy.
3 - Mrs. Farrance went to city on 7:52 train. Shaved Col Dan Burns who came down from Ukiah and Blue Lakes.  Gus Babcock drunk. $.35 tip.  Cruz Billy told me was arrested and fined $5 last Monday.
4 - Jack Johnson whipped Jeffrey in 15 rounds.  4th of July ball Hopland, $1.50.  Joe went and took Mable, Marguerite Murray and Teeny. Hopland band played.  Sent for corsets and supply to Deckelman Bros. Pat Duarte bronco busting fizzle. Brondage in Hopland. Milt Shears at dance, Bill and Jenny Duncan at dance.  Frank Dooley and wife were not at dance.  Thatcher and Tom Armstrong fixed the pump with white lead and wire.

9 - Present of ducks from Pulver. Julius Sierk hurt a day or two ago by a horse falling on him. Jim Myers hurt with cake of ice.
10 - Cloudy & cool this AM, warm PM.  OM Parson “Bill” told me he had sold his ranch.  Went out to Hop & Barley ranch, picked apples, drank milk and helped Danny.  Mrs. Farrance in SF and Tom out with double rig.
11 - Martin Hubbell came up to take charge of the Bill Parsons ranch. Made last $5. payment to Bank of Mt. View, borrowed $60 Sept 1st ‘09 for one year. Sent last $1.20 to Mrs. M.J. Kelly for Mable’s insurance for 1910.  Mrs. Clendenning refused to let me have a few tubs full of water for washing.. Teen and I have been sleeping out on the front porch for the last two or three nights. Will came up to Hopland. Neva Duncan gave Teenie the little white cat (7/12) Will killed the cat) Garrett Kidd in SF for last day or two.  Mart Smith and wife took rooms at Thatchers for a week.  Milt shears working in store for CE Duncan.
12 - Frank Dooley opened his saloon. May Banks in Ukiah, Mrs. Harris in Ukiah. G. Kidd came back from SF on 7:38 train.  Indian dance at Hop & Barley ranch. We did not go.  F. Dooley and family went. I believe it was a fizzle on a/c of no music. LD says Mart Smith, OM Parons, Hubbell and Joe Harris were full today.  Harry Pulver and wife working at Fosters..
13 - Bert Thompson clerking for F.W. Dooley. Tom Armstrong and Frank Niederost put new Douglas pump in our well.  Water very bad.  Gus Grant came to town 11:48 AM. Dottie came at 7:38.  Mr. Clendenning and Tom Farrance on same train. Clendenning left Brondage in SF.
14 - Mart Smith and crowd, Frank Dooley, Tom Farrance and others went deer hunting.  Cloudy and cold AM. Jack Mentz bad again for the last week. Out today. Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Thatcher called on Teen this PM.
16 - Began shaving necks with left hand. 500 club at Clens. Jack Mentz better. Harry Pulver working for Bob Foster.  Bud Beattie discharged Harry Shoemake. Frank Dooley’s gas machine blew up. Jack Hughes tending bar and Bert Thompson (Painter) working in store for Frank Dooley while they are deer hunting.  OM Foster in Hopland. Teen says Mrs. Mart Smith is jealous of Mrs. Pulver.
17 - Shaved Gus Grant.  Jessie Williams and wife in Hopland in cart. Jossie Murray came up to Hopland 11:48.  Martin Hubbell brot laundry 1st time.  Lizzie gave us a piece of venison.
18 - Frank Dooley and wife back from deer hunting. Cut Freddie Brook’s hair first time.  Paid balance on R of R, McClure, Cosmopolitan and Woman’s Home Companion combination. OM Grant across the river very sick.  Dr. Grand - paralyzed.  Gus Grant went back to city 6:52 AM.  Mrs. Farrance came home 7:38.  Fat Ed from Lakeport says he may rent Banks’ restaurant.
19 - Clendennings and Mrs. Mart Smith and Littie spent the day at Duncan Springs.  Three fellows from San Mateo, one commenced working for Beattie in the stable and one on hay press, two or three days ago.  May Banks in Ukiah.
20 - Smith of Ukiah working for Hop & Barley Co., hurt at Covelo, in Hopland with Tom Farrance. Nels Jensen say he is trying to buy out Beaver’s blacksmith shop.
21 - Gus Grant in Hopland. Mart Smith, Jim Bailhache, Frank Duncan and wives went camping 5:30 AM. Very warm, slight breeze. Mrs. Hagerman came to Hopland on 7:30. Martha Shields quit Dooley. Fire in mountains back of peak. Frank Dooley and Elma Daw refused to fight fire for Charley Snyder. Elma Daw went later.
22 - Rev. J.D. Allen told me his wife was sick in Sant Cruz and asked me to forward his laundry to 587 Mission Street, Santa Cruz, care of Mrs. Franklin. Shaved Eppler, Jack Casad’s friend and clipped his hair, all over.
23 - Sent Rev Allen’s laundry to Santa Cruz to him (due me $.75). Al Davidson stopped with us over night.  Band dance, none of us went on a/c Teen going to the city in the morning. Foster’s carpenter “Chicken house builder” quit.  He stayed over for the dance.  Teen and I slept on the side of the house and I enjoyed the music greatly. McCauly very drunk. Sent my watch to Ukiah by Clendenning to be fixed. He couldn’t get Teen’s ring.  Lottie Grant gave us a nice piece of venision. Lent band one gas lamp for dance.
24 - Teen, Mable, Teeny Baby, Jo and her two girls, Marguerite and Virginia went to San Francisco on the 12 noon train. Al Davidson went as far as Cloverdale with them. Shaved Gus Grant. Answered Junior Call puzzles for Mable for fountain pens.
25 - Mart Smith, Jim Bailhache, Frank Duncan and wives came back from camping this AM. Received statement from McClures magazine with $2.00 mistake. Mart Smith says Dick Foster’s pony trainer is going to quit tomorrow.  Cut Smith’s hair and shave him last time.  No doctor in Hopland yet.
26 - Gus and Lottie Grant went home to city.  Mr. Clendenning and Dorothy Duncan went with them.  Answered McClures magazine letter in re to $2.00 mistake.  Nice, cool.
27 - Lew Banks says he is going to work for Meyers. Mart Smith and wife left Hopland “for good this time”. Bud Beattie shot 121 lb buck today. The Shields girl graduated at Hopland from G. school with the highest percent in the county.
28 - Nice cool weather for the last few days. Grass and fence fire near Milt Shears old home. “Thompsons” Jim Bailhache and family left Hopland. They drove to Healdsburg.
30 - Thatcher, Joe Harris, Nels Jenson and others burned the grass around M. church south and Harvey house. Garrett Kidd is having his salon fixed up this week. Tramp painter printed “Hop Vine Saloon” on door.  Gave Will white duck pants. Sanburn of Ukiah in Hopland.  Cut Arthur Sullivan’s hair. Tom Farrance brot my watch from Ukiah.  Present of pie and cake from Mrs. F.

1 - Got blue paper from Thatcher to paper kitchen. Wrote to Norm and Teen. Very warm.  Joe Harris can’t find my bank book.  But Beattie got back from hunting.
2 - Bert Thompson papered and painted kitchen $1.50.  Dave Ahearns and Faught came to Hopland 7:38 train.  Mrs. Harris told me they were separated. Bob Duncan in town.  Paid Tom Farrance $.10 for my watch.  Duce Vassar back from camping.
3 - Norm’s friend, Sam Fevrier (Walton painter) came to Hopland 11:48 train.  Very warm, slight breeze. Shaved King, Winsor, 1st time this summer. Bud Beattie and Lew Banks took Charlie Cantrell home dead drunk.  Mr. Clendenning and Dorothy Duncan came home. Recd postal from McClures acknowledging final payment on Victor Hugo. Jack Hughes and Joe Alvarez hauling hay into Frank Dooley’s barn. Mrs. C. mother, Mrs. Seavey came up with Mr. C.
4 - Fred Rodgers working for Duce Vassar. Commenced within the last day or so. Sent to Best Gas Light Co for Bronson’s lamp for the band of Hopland. Fred Rodgers went to Ukiah. Sleeping on porch these nights and no asthma.  Joe Harris bot mule from Dr. Swales a day or two ago.
5 - Clarence Duncan told me that Frank Houghton and Lulu got married in Ukiah yesterday and that the Candy Kid is working for May Banks. Clara Dooley working for Frank Dooley in the ice cream parlor.  Wrote to Teen in San Francisco, sent her $3.00 check.  Thatcher arrested for shaking Geo. Lane’s kid and fined $10.00.  Teen and kids got home from city.
6 - Shaved Cleland of Ukiah. Packing pears in Harris warehouse with Chinaman.
7 - Put new grate in kitchen stove. Wore new gaiters for first time.  Cruz Billie going to Sant Cruz to Indian conference,.  Sent best patent leather shoes to Lakeport to be soled and heeled by Frank Martin.  Sent Mrs. Geo  McDougall $3.50 that Teen had borrowed.  Wrote to Wright about telephone. Sent postal to Boynton telling him not to write out insurance policy. Young Jewel and wife sitting on front porch at night.
8 - Italian hauling Dr. Sullivan’s furniture to depot.  RR wreck at Ignacio.  14 killed.  F.W. Dooley put up new ice cream sign last week. Jim Myers put up new curtain awning sign.  F.W. 11 - Kreigbaum’s wife hurt Monday or Tuesday of this week.  Excursion to Gravenstein apple show in Sebastopol.  Trouble last night between DelFungo and Kreigbaum. Kreigbaum hauled trunks and suit cases from DelFungo’s today. Gene Parr says Hop & Barley are going to pay $.80 this year Mrs. Dick Williams called on Teen 1st time with pictures of little girl’s party. One of the Shields girls working for Mrs. Thatcher. Hubbell in town getting horse shod at Beaver’s. Drunk. Jack Mentz stopped Hubbell’s team from running away. Report that Harry Pulver got a piece of steel in his eye.
13 - Laundry did not come down on morning freight. 1st time it missed. Clendenning told me about fight between the Barkers.  Band dance. Very lame, Couldn’t dance. Morrill gave me back my $.75. Robinson cooking at Banks’ restaurant.
14 - Bot 1st chicken from Bledsoe $.50.  O’Brien, Farris and two others went out to Parsons’ ranch with Hubbell to commence work on 8 or 9 room house.  Gus and Lottie came to town.
15 - Fred Miller told me Reeves was going to leave Pieta and that man by the name of Davis was going to run the Pieta hotel.
16 - Primary election day. Caughey got beat for the nomination. Hiram Johnson nominated for Governor.
18 - Hop pickers excursion for Hop & B. Co,.  Had photo taken of inside shop with Mable and Teenie by Ukiah photographer.
20 - Began picking hops at the Hop & B today.  Fixed up Bronson’s Best gas lamp for the band. It doesn’t work very well tonight. Heard Thatcher tell Garrett Kidd that he had rented the corner room of the hotel to a doctor.
22 - Recd Mrs. Florence Keefe’s letter to J. Walker, Santa Rosa.  Wrote to Owl Drug Store for WV.  Sent Friedman $4.50 for dining room linoleum.  Clarence Armstrong called on us and stayed overnight. He slept outside on couch. Bot blueblood hone from him.  Baby born in Hop & B field., miscarried.  Teen and Teenie sick with colds.  Report that auto wreck on Cloverdale road hurt lady and baby.
24 - Warren Bates of Mt. View in town.  Str told me that the Pieta auto stage ran into his auto and smashed his dust guard spring.  Fred Bailhache came to town with Warren Bates.  Caughey’s daughter died in Ukiah.  Gus Grant in Ukiah.  Lakeport pear team ran away. Dance in hall, we did not go.
25 - Mrs. Seavey, Gus and Lottie, Mrs. Clen went to the city. Bot shears from tramp. Sebastopol atty talk on wet and dry town.  Show that didn’t pay gave their audience their money back or didn’t take any money. Very warm.
26 - Baby born in Hop & B field. Fight between MH and IF and hop pickers.  Big fire somewhere in the north. Very smoky.
27 - Rec’d rubber from Owl Drug Co. By express. Made 40 shaves and 11 haircuts, took in $11.10. Dance in hall, we did not go.  Teen, Mable and baby went to Uncle Tom’s Cabin in school house yard tent. Dance in hop field, benefit for baby. Signed application for insurance with Joe Harris. MP’s but hop vines at Farrances.
28 - Gene Parr’s house on fire. Barker’s fence and grass fire. Billy Puchini, Gus Babcock fight. Warren Dooley back in town.
29 - Returned rubber veil to Owl for exchange. Took in $37.50 last week. Made last $5.00 payment to Hopland bank.  Shaved Santa Fe’s and dentist. Frank Dooley borrowed my double gas burner lamp.
30 - Sent puzzle answers to Sam Lloyd.  Shaved Dr. McLeod of Santa Rosa who was hurt in train wreck south of San Rafael.  Teen, boil and sick.
31 - Sheedy, S.P.Painter 24th & Treat Ave told me about two fellows being help up on hop field. Shaved Warren Dooley. Dance at hop fields.

1 - Clara Dooley came back from hop field dance at 6:30 AM.  Cash, purse $24.00.  Bank $29.50, Laundry $10.00 = $65.15.  Rent milk and paper paid.  Hurd still owed $15.00.  Com, net not in bank $2.90 in all.  Immediate bills paid.  Bronson and H. Thompson night watch for RR
2 - Circus excursion to Santa Rosa, Barnum & Bailey.  Recd NSGW badge from Norm.
3 - Mable picked prunes at Hewletts. Geo Jewell sore hand.  Mrs. Jewell went south.  Jim Myers sick. Hop picker beat Dooley $6.00.  Banks cook told me May Banks was going to sell restaurant to Bud Beattie.  Thru picking hops at H&B.  Clearlake telephone taken out by lineman.
5 - Jim Fitzpatrick 24th & Shotwell grocery store, picking hops. Refused negro hair cut. Took in $37.50 last week.  Wrote to Clare and Will last night. Little Robinson boy scalded.  Frank Harrington - Tom VanBibber fight.

8 - 6:52 AM Teen baby and I went to NSGW celebration in S.F.  Bot shoes, heavy Romeo’s.
9 - Saw Dr. Sullivan at ferry. Saw parade, etc and came back on 3:15 boat.  Teen just got on in time. Ed Kidd left Hopland.
10 - Joe Berryhill says he has been working for Farrance for 2 or 3 weeks.  Robinson, Banks’ ex-cook killed lady and himself in Ukiah.  Mrs. Tom Crawford in Hopland. Sold Sullivan house to Harry Thompson. Robinson telephoned from Ukiah wanting to know if I would sell shop.
11 - Annie Mane left Hopland. Lew and May Banks left Hopland for Visalia or Taft. Mrs. Tom Crawford sent home to Stege.  Bud Beattie started to run Vassar House.
12 - Bot 40 lb peaches from John Morrill, Teen and I put them up.
13 - Began taking milk from Parr for $2.00 a month.  Very cool morning. Mr. Clendenning fixing pipe of well. He told me about Frank and Fred Sevey. Joe Harris told me about Old Man Parson’s contract and that McVine bot Parson’s ranch, not Geo Jewell. Warren Dooley went back to Oakland. Milt Shears building barn for F. Duncan.
14 - Saunders the photographer told me he had spoiled the pictures the 2nd time.  Ed Kidd came back to Hopland.
15 - Mrs. G. Kidd and children went to Livermore.  Garret went with them to Healdsburg.  Frank Martin stopped at Bud Beatties’ restaurant today. Last day of Dooley’s ice cream parlor.  Mrs. Dooley treated Teen, Lizzie, Mr. Clen, F. Martin, Mable Dorothy and myself to the last of the ice cream.
16 - Mr & Mrs Frank Dooley went to SF on a visit. Shaved Jim Myers at home. Sick fora two weeks, in bed.
18 - First rain of the season. Thunder shower.
20 - Recd 1st check for $1.00 from Sam Lloyd, Woman’s Home Companion for puzzles. Armstrong fixing bicycle this week.  Teen got tomatoes  and figs at Farrances.
21 - Sent Dr. Sullivan $2.00 for crib.
22 - Warm 92. Sent to Ukiah by E.L. Williams for Mable’s school books.  Dr. Sullivan came to Hopland 7:38. Bud Beattie’s father died in Ukiah. Joe Harris and Bob Foster out hunting for two days. Back today
24 - DelFungo-Kreigbaum trial continued til Monday. Last night Eva Swan’s body was found under cement floor in basement of house on Eureka Street, San Francisco. She was formerly a teacher at Pieta.  Martin Hubbell full.  Amos saw his horse running past Dooley’s ranch.  Frank Duncan sick a bed.  Jim Myers still sick. F.F. 25 - Charley Myers and Uly Jones in town.  LD took dinner with Mrs. Thatcher.
26 - Kreigbaum got judgement and costs from DelFungo.
27 - Billy Shears tending bar for Jim Myers. Attachment of Kidd’s saloon. Place shut up.
28 - Shaved wood buyer from San Rafael.  Frank Dooley and Tom Farrance went to Santa Rosa.
29 - Pawnee Bill Wild West show in Santa Rosa. Cut Ed Granbell’s hair. Very bad cold in head.
30 - Carl Dooley working for DelFungo. Bot 5 gal gasolene from Thatcher.

OCTOBER

1 - Tom Farrance, Dick Williams. Ex-minister Hood, Gus Grant, Joe Harris, Bob Foster went deer hunting but got naught.  Sanford speaking tonight in Leek’s Hall.  Shaved Frank Duncan, well again. Mrs.. Grant, grocer, very sick today. Mrs. Julius Sierks had baby last night.  Frank Sierks went to work today in his old place on the RR after two months layoff.  Last night Otis times building in Los Angeles blew up.  Bob Lane, butcher, went to work in Kelseyville.
2 - Shaved OM Hood and Gus Grant.  They went home today. Dr. Sullivan left Thatcher’s without paying board bill. Harold Harvey told me that he hauled Doc Stagg’s furniture up to Hewlett ranch.
3 - Got box of barber supplies from Deckelman.
4 - Rev. J.B. Allen and wife left town. Mrs. Clendenning came home.  1st picture in Examiner contest city and town puzzles.
5 - This morning’s paper gave first report of revolution in Portugal.
7 - Talk about Frank Duncan being attached for $1,000.00. Thatcher refuses to close on Sunday.
9 - Great excitement in Hopland.  Bill Kelsey reported that Doc Staggs had killed Fowler and Filochy, the blind Italian.  Bell spoke in Hopland.  Staggs arrested.
10 - Staggs held over to appear before Superior Court for shooting Fowler. Dick Williams at funeral of bro-in-law’s sister.
11 - Rain nearly all day. Mrs. C. sick.  Mrs. Thatcher grapes and apples. Ben Bronson’s baby getting well from attack of pneumonia. Jim Myers still very sick. Kidd’s saloon still closed up.  Dr. Sullivan up again and did not pay board bill.
12 - Rain nearly all day. Heard someone hollering “thief” during night.
14 - Thomson’s moving into the house they bot from Mrs. Tom Crawford, called the Dr. Sullivan house.  Beaver moved into Julius Sierk’s house vacated by Thomson. Bessie Duncan went on visit to her mother and grandmother in Willows.  Dance at LaFranki’s in Sam Duncan hop house. Fire at Hop and Barley largo ranch, burned old house and some barn.
17 - Paid Joe Harris $4.10 for insurance on furniture.
18 - Mrs. Clen gave us some grapes yesterday. Teen made jelly today.
19 - Shaved Jim Myers at home, very bad.  Bessie Duncan came back from visit to mother. OWD sick. Harry Pulver got back from San Mateo.
20 - Mrs. Henry Buckman came to Hopland and Edna Faught to see Jim Myers. Met Johnnie Morrell this AM, been back a day or two from his vacation. Jim Myers died today a little after 4 o’clock.  Suby Hughes (Dooley) came uptown and notified the people.  Rumor Tom Parsons is dead.  Old Tek Indian died at Cloverdale.  I have slight attack of dysentery.
23 - Buried Jim Myers today. Tom Farrance and wife came back from Round Valley. Ed Kidd working for Beattie in stable.
24 - Teen cut her hair.  Harry Barker in Hopland.  Mrs. Beattie spoke to me abut renting upstairs.  Carl Dooley upset DelFungo’s wagon at depot.
25 - Randall, minister, brot laundry 1st time.  Cut Teenie’s hair short.  Mr. Thatcher spoke to me about Beattie’s renting the upstairs of our house. Lineman, tel, in town for last day or so.  Milt Shears working with lineman.  Young Thomas freight wagon on fire last night.  Teen and Mrs. F. went out to Jewell’s (Parson’s) ranch. Harry Pulver told me he was going to quit Fosters.
26 - Harry Pulver and wife discharged from Fosters, staying at Oliver Myers.  Report that McCutchen had sold his ranch.
27 - Pulver and I exchanged hair cuts. Clara and Eva Dooley working for Beattie in restaurant for the last week or two. John Morrill went to work again at the depot.  This is the 26th day of the Examiner California cities and towns picture puzzles. I expect to win a prize in the contest.
29 - 500 at home.
30 - Old Man Babcock, father of Tom, Sam, Jim, etc reported died yesterday.
31 - Carter of Mark West and Miss Gill of Hopland married in Hopland. Shaved Carter. Amos said Col. Dan Burns had been in Hopland for a few days and went home this morning. Ed Kidd, sore foot.

NOVEMBER

1 - Dick Babcock buried in Hopland cemetery today. Teen went with Mrs. Farrance.
2 - Garrett Kidd opened up his saloon today for the firstt time since he was closed by the sheriff. Bertha Shields in Hopland today, first time I have seen her since she had the typhoid fever.  Frank Dooley has a tank of gasolene in shed.
4 - Pulver’s house burned down in San Mateo. Dick Williams and wife went to Boonville.
5 - Gus and Lottie Grant came to town. Dance given by Pulver, Daw and C. Duncan. Vassars played. Teen went, I didn’t go. Lent them gas lamp. Pulver paid $.25 for lamp. Last day Examiner picture puzzle contest. Lizzie Duncan brot us a chicken from Mrs. Jones across the river.
6 - Blackson brot first ½ cord of wood.  This week they are graveling the road from the McGarvey turn towards town.  Mrs. Clen brot first mantle $.25 and paid $.25 for use of stand, nickel  plated.
8 - Election day. Sent No. Of dots, 2764 to Eilers Music House, S.F.. Gene Vassar, Bert Thompson (father-in-law) fight. Foster’s blind steer ran away from drove, knocked Fowler down and broke hole in Vassar’s cement sidewalk. Paid Blackson for cord of wood.
9 - Gus and Lottie went home to the city.
10 - Dodson bot cattle from Joe Harris. Bot lantern from Dooley. Carson Bledsoe’s sister dead. Carson told me he is going to funeral tomorrow. Lineman’s wife at C.’s.
11 - Teen made red dress for Teenie.
12 - Thatcher’s bro from Coos Bay started home this AM.
13 - Took shop the second time just one year ago today.  Took in during year $995. In barber business, have $94.25 in the bank and $24.75 in the laundry and $22.80 in cash.  Geo Cromwell told me some contractor was going to do a big job up near the peak next summer. Dance last night at B & W’s and one at LaFranki’s. Duncan and Clendenning sheets came back from the laundry all ared again.  Webb Harpe told Joe Harris that Lloyd Austin, Tom Parsons’ son-in-law was very sick and had fallen out of bed and hurt himself.  Teen put new tire on bike.
15 - OM Wm. Parsons told me about himself and Dooley.
16 - OM Parsons left Hopland for Farmington & Willows.  Clarence Duncan got bit by Beattie’s dog.  Report that McCutchen had bot the McGarvey ranch. Invitation card part at Mrs. C.  Mable and Teenie went with Neva down to Ruth’s in a cart.  Tom Armstrong cleaned out our well, paid him one dollar.  Austin Lloyd died about one today.  Mrs. F.W. Dooley had largest score at Mrs. Clen’s card party. Murray, constable, subpoenaed me on jury.
17 - Shaved Lloyd Austin’s father and McCoon, Lizzie Parson’s father. Bud Beattie over aruond Booneville for the last day or two with turkey buyer.
18 - Rain nearly all night last night. My health has been very good lately, no asthma, no pain in hip, no heavy feeling. Austin Lloyd buried today.
19 - No rain today, very cold.  500 at home. Teen and Mable up to see Mrs. F.W. Dooley. Party at Jessie Williams’, school teacher, last night. Al Count working for Beattie.
20 - Turkey shoot up Feliz Creek. Bud Beattie home. Call says that Sanford is beaten and that John B. Graves is elected. Report that Duce Vassar is sick at father’s ranch.
21 - Trial at which I was subpoenaed as juryman did not come to a trial. Today is cloudy and cool, sprinkling. Band of hogs from Kelseyville shipped from town. 2nd lot of linemen came to town today from Pieta. Butler, cattle man, telling me about Mrs. Thatcher. Dodson, cattle man buying lots of cattle, hogs, sheep, etc.  Bot Thatcher’s cow. Milt Shears running Duncan’s store.
22 - Cool, cloudy. I have been studying anatomy for the last few weeks.
23 - Rain all day. Picked goose for Thanksgiving.
24 - Fight between Jack Mentz and Gene Vassar.  Nels Jensen full. Thanksgiving, rain very hard. G. Kidd told me about his troubles with F. Duncan. Nels Jensen and Louie Ray episode with ladies.
25 - Mask ball last night given by the Hopland band. Teen and kiddies went. I didn’t.  Marvin Dooley and Bertha Shields won best sustained character prize and Harry Pulver and wife won prize for best dancers.  Wrote to Best Light Co., about band lamp and overhead burners. Duce went to Dr. in Cloverdale, very sick, bad cold.
26 - Cool and cloudy all day.  Only took in $2.25, exactly the same as a year ago.
27 - Winners in Examiner contest announced. I didn’t win anything.
28 - Teen making second night gown for Tom F.  Mrs. F. went after black tea and cocoanut cake.  Mrs. C. LD, Teen and myself.  OM Jacob’s dog killed by the train. Mrs. Joe Harris uncle went to town. Sat. C.R. Gregory and left today.  McCutchen went to Echo a few days ago.
29 - 500 at home.
30 - DelFungo had 30 wood choppers come up to cut wood, expect about 50. OM Beaver sharpened the Sullivan axe for me and put in new handle for $.25.  Told Josie Myers that I would keep razor and call her bill square. Carl Dooley quit DelFungo. Duce Vassar very sick at home. Lost the cast to my gold rimmed eye glasses. Teen found it.

DECEMBER

1 - Teen very sick with cramps last night. Mrs. Thatcher discharged Mrs. Yelton. Wrote to Norm and Eva.
2 - Report that Geo Jewel’s man “coon” left with Mrs. Jewel’s watch. Report that Garrett is trying to buy Duce Vassar’s saloon.  Wrote to Norm.  Teen and Mrs. C. went up to Mrs. Dooley’s. Mrs. D. in bed.
3 - Rain very hard last night and the AM. Teen made me a present of pair of pants from F. Dooley. LD stopping at Mrs. Farrance’s for a couple of nights. Teen and Mrs. C. at Dooley’s “bulion”. Fred Rodgers trying to buy Vassar’s saloon.
4 - Shaved Mrs. Geo Hood’s bro, Bishop from Arizona, one leg.  Wrote to Will. Bud Beattie in Lakeport with lawyer Bull from SF.  Tom Bryson, RR boss, left Hopland AM for Ridgewood. Geo Jewell told me about coon stealing watch. Joe Harris told me about loaning money to Bud Beattie. Owns nothing in stable. Mrs. Mary Baker died last night.
7 - Duce Vassar told me he had sold his saloon to Fred Rodgers for $100.  Henry Brooks got back from somewhere.
8 - Stagg’s trial for shooting Fowler set for today before Superior Court at Ukiah.  Kyle back to Hopland, painting rigs for Beattie.  Cool cloudy weather this morning and far the last 5 or 6 mornings. Teen told me abut Jim Clendenning and lineman and girl back of the barn.  Millie Yuelton went to work for Farrance this PM
9 - Clara Dooley quit or was discharged from Beattie’s Thur or Fri. Left tonight.  500 at Mrs. Dick Williams’. Began keep items on war with Japan.  Teen and kids at Mrs. Harris this evening. Teen sent for yarn to Petaluma by Mrs. Harris.
10 - Rain - heard rig pass up or down alley twice last night about 1:30 AM. Staggs jury, yesterday, hung.
12 - Lester Banks in Hopland.
13 - 500 at home. Mrs. C mad at me.  Mrs. T.F. discharged Mrs. Melton. Strider “black” ;quit Fosters. O’Keefe’s friend in Hopland.
14 - Bud Beattie, Fred Rodgers, Ed Kidd and Kyle drove up to Ukiah this AM.
15 - Dick Williams went to City.  Graveling back of depot and between warehouse and livery stable. Bridge steel at depot for last day or two.  Ben Bronson’s family moving to Cloverdale. Harry Harrington has gone to Hop & Barley Co’s Chico ranch. Moving his furniture today. Lester Banks still in Hopland.
16 - Pulver and I exchanged haricuts. F. Duncan told me about being locked out and sleeping in the barn with Al Count.
17 - Recd groceries from Freese & Co.  Mrs. Keyser came back to town last night. Bledsoe taking bridge steel off of car yesterday and today. Shaved Paul Bargolotti, he says he is going on Staggs’ bonds.  DelFungo loading 1st car with wood. Dance given by Pulver. I didn’t go. Report Louie Ray OK.
18 - Teen, Mable and Teeny Baby went to San Francisco this PM. Very bad cold from too short a haircut.
20 - Gene and Billy Vassar very drunk around town.
21 - Automobile tipped over near Allenbest’s .  Young Thomas, Kelseyville. Milt Shears carpentering across river. Clarence and Bessie running the store again. I think Garrett Kidd is sore at us for something. Cook from Willows cooking for Beattie’s . Joe Harris in San Francisco. DW told me OM Vassar had mortgage on Brooks, Barker, Girraud and lots more. Thinks he is worth $100,00. Two young fellows going to Willets told me DelFungo was selling wine and groceries. Geo Cromwell came back to town last night.
22 - Talking to Dr. Staggs. Told him he could have old red cushion chair. Put new $.45 handle in Sullivan axe. Had Tom Armstrong file and saw set.
23 - Joe Alverez and Carl Dooley went to SF. Jack Hughes and family went  to spend Christmas.
25 - Went to B & W Ranch for dinner.  Shaved Bailey, Dooley’s son-in-law.  Shaved Gill of Hollister, belonged to San Jose, #22NSGW.  Amos and wife, Gordon and myself only ones at dinner. Gordon showed me rotten porch.
27 - Shaved Gus Grant. Went back to S.F. He told me that he was going to live in Sacramento and was going to take his piano. Had supper with Joe Harris. Nels Jensen told me about his trouble with Jack Mentz. Dorothy Duncan has had sore eyes fora the last few days, getting better. Duce Vassar staying in Cloverdale.
28 - Shaved 3 business men of Hopland in 4 days.
30 - Duce told me about Lew Banks sending for 50 dollars.  Duce starts today for Cloverdale and from there goes to Santa Barbara tomorrow with his wife and brother Jim.
31 - Traded old W&B razor to Harry (who claims he learned the barber trade in Santa Rosa with his father) for old time pipe razor.  Business is very dull this winter. Mrs. F. Dooley told me this morning that they had a 500 party at her house Wed. afternoon.  I have cut and spilt about 4 cords of wood since last January.  Recd box of chocolate for Mable and Teenie from Norm. It is very cold tonight. Teen and Mable and Teenie are in the city.  I expect them home tomorrow.  Mask ball given by the band. I didn’t go.
