G. P. VINCENT

George Paul Vincent is president of the Fresno County Farm Bureau, has been a director in the California Raisin Pool and has been active in public farm matters for the last ten years or more.

Mr. Vincent is the son of Manuel and Laura (Paul) Vincent, born November 15, 1890, at Selma. His father was a. native of the Azores islands, who was brought to Mariposa county, California, by his widowed mother in 1871.  Manuel Vincent first; located at Selma in 1887, starling as a blacksmith and developing his business into a general implement trade, he became interested in the First National bank, of which he became president, and helped organize the Selma Savings bank, of which he also was president. Associated with his son, Paul, he followed the real estate and insurance business for many years as well as farming on a large scale.

Paul Vincent was educated in the Selma schools, and then secured the degree of M. D. C. from the Chicago Veterinary college. Returning to California, be practiced his profession for two years at Turlock and at Selma, then associated himself with his father's farming and real estate business.  He is at present engaged in farming to the extent of looking after his late father's properties in various parts of California, in Los Angeles, Fresno and Stanislaus counties.

He is married to Eleanor Bellamy, a native of Missouri: They have four children: Paula, Phyllis, Laura Jane and Patricia.  Mr.Vincent is a past master of the Selma Lodge of Masons, and a member of the Royal Arch Masons.  He is also a member of the Selma Community club. [Pages 186-187]

 

ELMER L. LORD

Elmer Leaman Lord, president and manager of the Fisher-Glassford Hardware company, and president of the Fresno Merchants association, was born in Mariposa county, California, on April 8, 1894, the son of Joseph and Clara (Latchaw) Lord. His parents were also both born in Mariposa county, and his father, who is now retired arid living in Fresno, was formerly in the cattle business.

Elmer Leamon Lord received his education in the public schools of Mariposa county and at Heald's Business College.

He joined the firm of Fisher-Glassford in 1911 as stenographer and bookkeeper and continued until 1914, when he became connected with the old Fresno National bank, where he remained until December, 1915, when Mr.  Lord, Frank Smith and A. M. Bopp purchased the business of Fisher-Glassford and Mr. Lord became secretary and treasurer. In 1927 he purchased Mr.  Smith's interest in the business, and Mr. Lord became president of the company.  The business of Fisher-Glassford, which is one of the oldest and largest hardware and crockery houses in Fresno, was established in 1903, and was originally located on Fulton street, later on Tulare street, and subsequently moved back to Fulton street. The store was moved to its present location at the corner of Fulton and Merced in June 1932.  During the World war Mr. Lord served in the 158th Aero squadron of the United States Army, and spent seven months in England, and about the same length of time in France. He was aboard the S. S. Tuscania when it was torpedoed, with a loss of three hundred lives.

He is a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Sciots and the Elks Lodge.  Mr. Lord was married on June 8, 1919, to Sena Jensen, and they are the parents of four children: Melvin E., Donald E., Levern I., and Betty Jo Dell Lord. [page 297]

DR. F. E. MORGAN.

Francis Edward Morgan is a Native Son of the Golden West and one of the prominent physicians of Santa Cruz, coroner of the county, and a genial, whole-souled, good fellow. He was born in Hornitos, Mariposa County, California, August 29, 1857, and came to Santa Cruz while he was quite young. His education was received in the public schools of this county. He graduated from the medical department of the Uni­versity of California in 1881, and immediately thereafter began the practice of his pro­fession in Santa Cruz. In 1886 he was appointed county physician and was elected to the office of coroner and public administrator, and was re-elected in 1890, holding these positions at the present time.

He was married, November 24, 1884, to Annie M. Downey, the result of the union being three children, Amy, Arlie, and Edward. The doctor is a member of the Santa Cruz Parlor, No. 9o, N.. S. G. W., and order of K. of P.

Dr. Morgan is slender, with a quick, active, nervous temperament, and a disposition that revels in fun. The doctor has a large and lucrative practice, and his friends are legion. He is kept continually busy, a fact which he seems to appreciate, as a temperament like his may wear a long time but would very soon rust out.

FRANK D. ROBINSON

Commercial activity in Merced finds a worthy representative in Frank D. Robinson, who has been engaged as a commercial photographer for the past thirteen years at this place, where he has built up a far-reaching and satisfactory business, his work extending over the entire county. He is a native of the county, born near Merced Falls, on March 17, 1875, a son of Dr. William and Malissa (Yonker ) Robinson, whose sketch may also be found in this work.  Frank D. Robinson received a public school education and while the greater part of his life has been spent on a farm he has been employed in various lines of work, broom making, smithing and milling; he learned mineralogy in the old Mariposa Mine. Since taking up commercial photography he has been content to make Merced his permanent home.

Mr. Robinson's marriage united him with Miss Edith Gann, a daughter of Eli Gann, a California pioneer of Mariposa County.  Mr. and Mrs. Robinson were the parents of one son, Ernest Alton, who was accidentally killed when only eighteen years of age. Mr.  Robinson is independent in his political views, voting for the man best fitted for office, rather than be confined to strict party lines.  Fraternally he is a member of Willow Lodge No. 121, I. 0. 0. F., of Snelling, in which he is a Past Grand; he also belongs to Yosemite Lodge No. 30, K. of P., of Merced. [Page 693]

ELDRIDGE C. FARNSWORTH.

For the past thirty-five years Eldridge C. Farnsworth, Sr., member of the law firm of Farnsworth, McClure, Burke & Maddox has practiced his profession in Visalia, California, and is now one of the oldest and best known members of the local bar. He was born in Mariposa county, California, where his father, Calvin E. Farnsworth, resided for forty years. Calvin E. Farnsworth was a native of what is now the state of West Virginia. He married Ann Isabel McCready, who was born in Ireland, reared in Pennsylvania, and in 1859 came to California.

Eldridge C. Farnsworth was educated in the San Francisco schools, after which he entered the Hastings Law College, from which he was graduated in 1884. The same year he was admitted to practice by the California supreme court. From that time until 1890 he practiced in Amador county and part of that time was district attorney. In 1890 he came to Visalia, where he has since resided and has taken an interest in many local matters pertaining to the public wealth. He served for some time as president of the Visalia Board of Education, and in 1894 was elected mayor of the city.

Mr. Farnsworth is a prominent figure in fraternal circles. He is a member of Visalia Lodge No. 128, F. & A. M.; is also al Royal Arch Mason, a Knight Templar, and a Noble of the Mystic Shrine in Islam Temple of San Francisco ; a Knight of Pythias; a member of Visalia Lodge No. 1298, Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, and belongs to the Woodmen of the World.

While practicing law in Amador county Mr. Farnsworth was married to Miss Cora Madge McLaine, a native of that county, and they have two daughters : Mrs. Lillian M. Burke of Visalia ; and Mrs. Winifred F. Booth of Los Angeles.
