BAILEY FLATS (MIST)
Bailey Flats lies in northern Madera County near the junctions of Road 800 (Bailey Flats Road), Road 810 (Acton Grade Road), and Road 1812 (Stumpfield Road). It is now ranch land with no commercial structures remaining.
Bailey Flats was named for Gillum Baley (1813-1895) by misspelling his name. He was an early pioneer in the area but later moved to Millerton where he was a judge in the then Fresno County. His interesting life is recounted at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gillum_Baley.
The Bailey Flats Cash Store operated for the few families in the area and travelers from Raymond into the mountains. It housed the Mist Post Office from 1913 to 1935. A local school was built by 1900 with about 9 students, and having burnt and rebuilt several times was closed in 1947.
There is a reported burial ground at Bailey Flats but yet not described.
