Vera moved back to Bakersfield almost one year ago after living for over 52 years in Carpinteria, CA. Vera was born in Laws, CA on September 28,1919, a rural area just outside of Bishop. She moved with her family to various farms and ranches from the Owens Valley down through Kern River Valley, eventually to the Southern San Joaquin. She graduated from Kern County High School and married a classmate, Richard "Dick" Millett, a native of Kern County. Vera was a homemaker, who raised three children, cared for her own mother, and always found a bed for someone who needed a place to sleep, and a plate of food for someone who needed to eat. She was generous to a fault, and money never was important to her. Dick was a second generation oil field worker, and the two of them symbolized Kern Countys fundamental hard work ethic that comes from a life lived on the farms and in the fields. Dicks job with Shell Oil eventually led the family to the coast, but Bakersfield was always a center point for the family. Carpinteria was a special place for Vera, as well, its mild climate and small town atmosphere is where she loved to be. Granny, Vera,, and Judy loved to grow beautiful flowers, including Poinsettia and Fuchsia, as large as trees. Theres an affinity between the Central Valley and the Central Coast and there was always a flow of friends and family back and forth. Vera was preceded in death by Dick, who she always loved, even though they did eventually divorce. She was also preceded in death by her middle child, Judy Coaster, who cared for her and was loyal to the end for her. She is survived by her two sisters, Rosalene Moore and Laurene Carter, both of Bakersfield. She leaves two children, Maureen Gibson of Gilroy, CA and Michael Millett of San Clemente, CA along with their spouses, children and childrens children. Honoring her wishes, there will be no funeral. Friends may remember Hospice. There truly are angels among us, the kindness of Hoffman Hospice workers, along with the staff at Glenwood Gardens will always be appreciated by Veras family. Vera will be buried closet to her mother, father, grandmother, and many other relatives at Greenlawn Cemetery in Bakersfield. Additional Comments: Volunteer submission - No relation to deceased.
