Funeral services will be held Monday, December 13, 2004, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church (Columbus Ave.) at 10:30 a.m. with interment at Hillcrest Memorial Park to follow. Dick passed away peacefully at home after a short hospital stay. He was born in Bakersfield, CA of Italian immigrant parents Sabatino and Salomina Scatena who preceded him in death. He attended Lincoln Elementary and St. Joseph Catholic School of Bakersfield. He graduated from KCUHS (now BHS) in 1941. He attended BC one year and then transferred to St. Marys College until he was called into the Army for WWII. He served in Europe and the Battle of the Bulge until February of 1946. When he retired to Bakersfield, he married his high school Sweetheart Maxine. He then took over the neighborhood grocery business from his mother. His life long dream was to become a teacher, so he returned to Fresno State and earned his Masters degree in Business. He retired in 1982 after teaching for 30 years at EBHS in the Business Dept. He also taught at BC and at the Bakersfield Adult School. His affiliations with business organizations were NEA, CTA, Calif. Council of Adult Ed, CBEA, and CBTA. Dicks love of gardening kept him busy in retirement along with traveling with friends across the U.S. on many wonderful trips. He was active in his church and served as a lector, President of the Parish Council, and belonged to the ICF Branch 281, where he served as President for 3 years. He was also a member of the Italian Heritage Dante Association and served as a board member. His only brother Ilo Scatena preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Maxine of 58 years along with his children, Dave and Jan Scatena of Encinitas, CA, Jerry and Marcia Scatena of Colorado, Mike Scatena of Weaverville, CA, Kathy Scatena of Bakersfield, Nic and Molly Scatena of Bakersfield; and niece, Valerie Scatena and husband, Rodger of Portland, OR. He was blessed with 11 grandchildren, Angela and Drew Brereton, Nathan Scatena, Gina and Ben Martinez, Marc and Tiffany Scatena, John Scatena, Liza and Brian Butler, Melissa Scatena, Chris Scatena, Lisa Smart, Matthew Smart, and Dominic Scatena along with 2 great-grandchildren, Dante and Mario Martinez. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend who will be dearly missed by family and his many friends. The family would like to thank the staff at Optimal Hospice Care, Don Baylor at Bakersfield Family Medical Center, and the staff at the Bakersfield Heart Hospital for the wonderful care that was given to Dick. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Our Lady of Perpetual Help School, Optimal Hospice, or to your favorite charity.
