Mass of the Resurrection is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at St. Augustine Church, followed by burial at the South Kern District Cemetery in Arvin. To learn the story of Villalpando, one had only to feel his hands. Before his retirement, they were covered with rough calluses that told of a life poured out in service to his family. A former altar boy in his native Jalisco, Mexico, Villalpando served in the Mexican military and participated in the Guest Worker or Bracero Program that provided Mexican laborers with temporary work in the U.S. A Mexican gentleman with an old-world sense of honor and responsibility, he labored for more than 35 years as a farm worker in the Arvin-Lamont area. Villalpandos lifetime of hard work and sacrifice in the fields ensured that his children and grandchildren would be able to enjoy a better life. His sons and daughters are all public servants. Villalpando was preceded in death by his wife, Sara Villalpando in 1972. He is survived by brothers, Manuel Villalpando and Salvador Villalpando; sisters, Maria Ynez Marquez and Concepcion Sanchez all of Mexico; two sons, Leonardo Rodriguez of Bakersfield and Benjamin Villalpando, Jr. of Arvin; three daughters, Consuelo Rodriguez of Bakersfield, Margarita Colon of Lamont, and Sara Guerra of Bakersfield 17 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren.
