Once called Gelstone, Eldridge was a small community to the north and west of the resort area. The town was named for Captain Oliver Eldridge. Eldridge and Gelstone, both members of the governing board of the district had the place named for them at different times. The mild climate was one of the reasons this was chosen for the site of a state hospital, built in 1890. [Archived Website. Link]
