Birth registrations were required in the State of California beginning in the year 1905. However, it took several years to implement the law within the County of Lassen. Unless a family lived in or near the county seat, birth records often were never filed up until about the year 1920. Therefore, many births that occurred within Lassen County prior to the year 1920 were not recorded.

This index does NOT include delayed births (birth records filed years after the event - often many years). Birth records in Lassen County prior to 1905 are extremely sparse and none are included here.

The law requiring the recording of birth registrations for the Native Americans was not actively enforced by the County of Lassen prior to the year 1920. Many Native American births within Lassen County went unrecorded as late as the 1960s.

There are several ‘Unnamed’ infants within this index. Because of the high mortality rate for infants in the early years of Lassen County, and sometimes due to superstition, many families did not name their children officially until after the baby was (at least) several months old. Some of the unnamed infants in this index may have perished at birth or were stillborn.

Names here are listed as they appear in the records of the Lassen County Recorder. No data about individuals younger than 72 years is posted here. Therefore, no information is listed here for individuals born after the year 1939.
