Then and Now

Lake County was not an "original" county when California was
formed. On May 20, 1861 the Act for forming Lake County was
approved by the Governor of California. The northern part of Napa
County became the main part, with a portion to the east taken from
Colusa County and the northern part came from Mendocino County.
The boundary lines between Lake and Napa counties have been
adjusted since then. In March 1872, all of Knox township, which
included the post office of Zem-Zem passed from Lake County back
to Napa County
